Gietzel, Fondy roll past Kaukauna  69  –  52

If it was the last time the four seniors on the Fond du Lac girls basketball team took their home court, they made sure to end it on a high note.

The win wasn’t perfect, but there was never a doubt as to the final outcome.

Ally Gietzel scored a game-high 21 points and Fond du Lac took a big first-half lead as the Cardinals cruised past Kaukauna 69-52 in Fox Valley Association play on Senior Night Tuesday at Fond du Lac.

“It was a special moment for their potentially last time on the home floor, to get that win,” Fond du Lac coach Jeff Bell said of his seniors. “There was some seniors that really stepped up. Meg Mengert hit some big shots and really stepped up on what was a really special night for her.”

With the win wrapped up, Fond du Lac senior McKensey Hendrix, who’s missed most of the season with a torn ACL, was able to take the floor for the last few seconds.

But to get to that point, the Cardinals needed to take care of business against an overmatched Galloping Ghosts squad.

On the strength of some hot outside shooting, great passing and terrific defense, Fond du Lac (11-9, 10-6 FVA) quickly took a lead that Kaukauna (1-19, 0-16 FVA) could never overcome.

A three-point edge early on soon ballooned into a 20-point advantage as the Cardinals went into halftime up 35-16. That first half saw Mengert hit shots from the outside, while Gietzel continued to play at a high level. Defensively, Fond du Lac kept the Ghosts off-balance.

“Our ball movement, especially in the first half, we really swung the ball and that led to our typical drivers driving and kicking,” Bell said. “We were able to knock down some shots right away. That always helps. Defensively, only giving up 16 points, that’s the big difference-maker. It starts on defense.”

“We just came out and started strong,” Fond du Lac’s Megan Dille added. “Not letting them get off to a hot start. It just really brought up our confidence and we were able to hold it together.”

In the second half, Kaukauna was able to find some offensive success, but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome the 19-point halftime deficit as Fond du Lac continued to score with regularity. The closest the Ghosts got was 16 points late in the contest.

Apart from Gietzel, Mengert had 11 points and both Dille and Aleah Wendels added nine. Bailey Tracy also had eight points.

“It was really great (to have balance) because Aleah and Ally got into foul trouble at one point,” Mengert said. “We had other people step up and we all believed in one another and believed in our shots.”

The regular season coming to a close, Bell believes his team is trending in the right direction with the playoffs just around the corner.

“I think we’re close,” he said. “We’re on the right track. There’s little things we need to work on, but I think we’ll ready. I’m really glad we play Hortonville to finish up (the regular season) because we didn’t show up last time (in a loss). I’m hoping we come in and show them what the real Fond du Lac is about. That will be the real test if we’re ready or not.”

KAUKAUNA 16 36 — 52

The Cardinals led the Lightning 38-29 at halftime but were limited to just 19 points in the second half as North stormed back and tied the game with 35 seconds to go.

The Lightning then grabbed the lead and the Cardinals’ long 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed the mark.

Hortonville demolishes Fond du Lac

With the Fond du Lac girls basketball team in the midst of a three-game losing streak, Hortonville was probably the last opponent the Cardinals wanted to face.

Leading the Fox Valley Association, the Polar Bears showed why they’re the best team in the conference and sent Fond du Lac to yet another loss, keeping the Cardinals in their current funk. Madi Walter scored 18 points and Hortonville jumped out to a big halftime lead as the Polar Bears crushed Fond du Lac 61-23 in a FVA game Tuesday night at Fond du Lac.

“Energy, passion, heart. We just flat didn’t come out (to play),” Fond du Lac coach Jeff Bell said. “We didn’t look like we wanted it.”

It didn’t take long for Hortonville (12-2, 9-1 FVA) to establish itself as the superior team, at least on Tuesday. The Polar Bears bolted to a 9-2 lead a few minutes into the game and went on an 11-0 run late in the half to take a 32-11 advantage going into the break.

“We had a game plan and we didn’t follow it,” Bell said. “It was that simple, I think. We didn’t follow our game plan and the energy wasn’t there. That’s too good of a team not to follow a game plan. Conference aside, they’re probably the best team we’ve played all year. … You’ve got to give credit to Hortonville. This would be a tough game even if we were playing our best.”

Trailing by 21 points at the break, Fond du Lac (7-7, 6-4 FVA) never challenged the Polar Bears in the second half. Hortonville began the half on a 23-5 run and both the Cardinals and Polar Bears finished off the game with reserve players for the final minutes. Shay Frederick added 17 points for Hortonville and Jenna Jalling had nine. Megan Dille paced Fond du Lac with 11 points, the only Cardinal in double digits.

After starting the season 7-3, Fond du Lac has now lost four games in a row. For the Cardinals to get out of their rut, Bell believes they need to have a better attitude.

“Positivity, energy and giving it your all every time you step on the court,” Bell said. “You’ve got to be willing to make the adjustments and go hard.”

Fond du Lac stifles Appleton East

In a conference where every game can come down to the wire, wins can’t be taken for granted. On paper, the Fond du Lac girls basketball team appeared to be a better squad than Appleton East. Even so, the Cardinals knew it would be a tightly-contested battle with the Patriots. Nothing is easy in the Fox Valley Association. Friday’s game was no exception, but the first-place Cardinals are on a roll and not much has been able to slow them down as of late.

Ally Gietzel led all scorers with 16 points and Fond du Lac used a stifling defense to shut down Appleton East as the Cardinals held off the Patriots 57-39 in a FVA game Friday night at Fond du Lac.

“I think anybody in this conference can win,” Fond du Lac coach Jeff Bell said. “I don’t expect to beat anybody every night. We’ve got to do the little things. … It’s just another strong conference win in what I think is a super strong conference no matter what teams’ records are. Teams have been competing with each other no matter if they’re 0-6 or 6-0. A win is huge in this conference.”

Fond du Lac (7-3, 6-1 FVA), winners of three in a row and seven of its last eight games, jumped out to a big lead on Appleton East (1-9, 1-6 FVA) to start Friday’s contest but had to survive a scrappy Patriots squad that never gave up.

Trailing 4-2 early on, Fond du Lac’s Gaia Templer banked in a 3-pointer to give the Cardinals a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Gietzel then sank two free throws and Alyssa Anhalt and Megan Dille scored consecutive baskets to push Fondy’s advantage to 11-4.

Gietzel and Aleah Wendels drilled consecutive 3-pointers later in the half to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 25-8, but the Patriots wouldn’t go away. They’d eventually cut the lead to 29-20 and it was a manageable 32-20 at halftime.

Using a press defense paired with the fact that Fond du Lac struggled at the free-throw line, going just 18-of-36, Appleton East was able to stay within a 10-12 point margin for most of the second half before the Cardinals pulled away in the final minutes. In the end, the Patriots just couldn’t muster enough offense to overcome the early deficit. Lexi Schneider and Megan Schweitzer led Appleton East with 10 points apiece.

“A big benchmark for us is always staying under 40 points (on defense), so that’s our goal every game,” Wendels said. “Keep a team under 40 points and (the game) is ours.” Although Fond du Lac did have problems with Appleton East’s press at times and didn’t convert nearly enough at the foul stripe, it was a solid game offensively for the Cardinals.

In addition to Gietzel’s 16, Wendels added 13 points and both Anhalt and Dille had 10. With that kind of balanced scoring, it prevents opponents from keying on one or two players and forces them to stay honest on defense. “It makes it harder for their defense to just guard one player,” Anhalt said of the team’s balance. “They have to guard the whole team instead.”

With the win, Fond du Lac remains tied at the top of the FVA with Hortonville — both teams sporting 6-1 marks in conference.

APPLETON EAST 20 19 — 39
Fond du Lac 32 25 — 57

Appleton East — Schneider 10, Schweitzer 10, Peterson 3, Dailey 8, Esker 6, Heimann 2. 3-pointers: 1 (Peterson). FTs: 10-16. Fouls: 23 (Schweitzer).

Fond du Lac — Gietzel 16, Anhalt 10, Wendels 13, Templer 3, Tracy 1, Dille 10, Dardis 4. 3-pointers: 3 (Gietzel, Wendels, Templer). FTs: 18-36. Fouls: 17.

Gietzel, Fond du Lac shock Lightning

With under two seconds remaining, Ally Gietzel stepped to the free throw line. The game tied at 43 apiece, the star sophomore had a chance to send the Fond du Lac girls basketball team to its biggest win in recent memory. She never flinched.

Gietzel made two pressure free throws with 1.8 seconds left as the Cardinals shocked state-ranked Appleton North 45-43 in a Fox Valley Association game Thursday night at Fond du Lac.

“It’s huge,” Fond du Lac coach Jeff Bell said of the win. “I think we as a coaching staff felt that we were right up there with Kimberly, Appleton North, Neenah — I thought that we let that one go (against Neenah) on Tuesday. Those are all teams that we can compete with and win against and it showed tonight.”

Tied 43-43, Appleton North (5-2, 3-2 FVA), ranked No. 6 in Division 1 in the latest Associated Press poll, actually had a chance to take the lead with seconds remaining. But the Lightning’s Grace Garvey missed a short jumper, Gietzel corralled the rebound and was fouled as an Appleton North player tried to strip her of the ball.

Leading Fond du Lac (5-3, 4-1 FVA) with a game-high 25 points on Thursday, Gietzel walked to the line with confidence, receiving two shots as the Cardinals were in the double bonus. “I think it’s a big win,” Gietzel said. “We’ll take a big step now with our confidence. It will help us going forward.”

Aleah Wendels added 10 points for the Cardinals, which held a 22-21 advantage at halftime, but needed to battle back late in the game. Falling behind 36-29 after a 3-pointer from Appleton North’s Kari Brekke, Wendels made a layup and drew the foul to cut it back to four points and Bailey Tracy followed with a bucket. After another Lightning 3-pointer, which pushed the lead to 41-37, Gietzel made two free throws and a basket with 1:39 left to even the score at 41 apiece. North’s Garvey made a pair from the line to put the Lightning back up, but Gietzel matched her with two more free throws.

It was fitting that the back and forth battle concluded with two more from the charity stripe for Gietzel — who made six of the Cardinals’ nine free throws on Thursday. Moving forward, the win gives Fond du Lac a huge momentum boost heading into the holiday break, especially with the Cardinals dealing with some injury issues. “With three starters out, it makes those bench players come in strong and come in confident and I can get more minutes out of the bench now,” Bell said. “I can give some more of those players the rest to prevent the injuries, which is what we have now from long play. That’s where the huge confidence comes in. And the starters, they know whoever comes in, we can handle any team.”

Bell, Fond du Lac looking for improvement

In his first year at the helm last season, Fond du Lac girls basketball coach Jeff Bell knew there would be some growing pains. New coach, new system, new philosophy — for a high school team that can be a little overwhelming at first. Now, entering his second season, Bell and the Cardinals are hoping to bounce back from a 5-18 campaign in 2014-15 that included a 4-14 mark and ninth-place finish in the Fox Valley Association. With a full year under his belt, Bell is confident that the experience he and his players gained last season will benefit the team in 2015-16. “Not having to spend the time on certain things, we’ve got to review it because it’s not perfect, but we can get more into

[the system], adding more complex stuff to it,” Bell said. “With communication, they seem a little more outgoing than they were last year. Other than that, having more time in practice to do more complex things (will be helpful).”

Although Fond du Lac won’t have Nicole Gietzel (7.8 points per game) this season, the Cardinals return her younger sister, Ally (8.6 ppg), as well as McKensey Hendrix (8.0), Aleah Wendels (6.0), Megan Dille (4.8) and Alyssa Anhalt (3.2).

Bell thought that Wendels and Dille showed leadership qualities in the first week of practice and would take on that kind of role for the rest of the season. “Aleah Wendels has really stepped up leadership-wise and so has Megan Dille,” Bell said. “They both are probably some of our best talkers in practice and I’ve seen it on the court with Dille last year and I think Aleah’s ready to step up as the point guard that would do that.”

Bell also expects Hendrix, Gietzel and Anhalt to make significant contributions on the floor this season as well. “McKensey has worked really hard in the offseason. You can just tell by looking at her, she looks like she’s in a lot better shape than she was last year,” Bell said. “She just seems to be better all-around — quicker, better defensively. Ally grew two inches over the summer, which is nice. She’s still going to be that strong offensive and defensive player for us. Alyssa is a nice lefty and she can go that direction, which can throw some teams off.”

A primary emphasis for the Cardinals this season is on defense, which Fond du Lac struggled with at times last year. In allowing about 47 points per game, Fond du Lac performed adequately, but without an explosive offense, it wasn’t good enough to consistently win. “We’re going to harp on defense a lot,” Wendels said. “We want our intensity up, we’re going to be well-conditioned.” Added Bell: “We’re looking to be that team that’s in your face, more annoying. Last year, it felt like we gave up so much in the middle, easy layups. We’re really enforcing deflections and denying the passes harder.”

Offensively, Bell pointed to turnovers as a sticking point and knows the Cardinals will need to be more careful with the ball if they hope to compete for the upper half of the FVA. That said, he thinks his team has some serious offensive talent, especially from the outside. “We averaged around 18 turnovers a game last year and we need to focus on getting that down,” Bell said. “I think we’ve got two of the best drivers in the conference and some of the best shooters. The drive and kick should be a real option because if you don’t help, we’re going to take it all the way. If you help, we’ll be able to kick it out to some people that can shoot.”

An interesting twist to the 2015-16 WIAA high school basketball season is the transition from 8-minute quarters to 18-minute halves. Implemented to help with pace of play and prevent teams from stalling at the end of quarters, Bell doesn’t think the move to halves will really affect how his team plays but could lead to more trips to the free throw line, additional foul trouble and the need for better conditioning with the addition of four minutes of game play.

“For us, I don’t see it being a factor,” he said. “We pressed a little bit last year, but we’re not a team that presses the entire game. I expect to maybe see some more zone (defense), so I think we’ll need to work on our zone offense a little bit more, with teams trying to catch their breath with that extra two minutes in the half. … I don’t think the games will really look too different, I just think teams may have to go deeper in their bench. The games are going to be longer because the bonus is going to be longer. You’re going to have to be able to shoot free throws to win games.”

Competing in the FVA, Bell and the Cardinals know they’re in for a challenge every time they step on the court, but still have goals of competing with the best of their opponents. “We’re looking to fall in the top half of the conference,” Wendels said. “We’re looking to improve immensely from last year. We’re looking to be more competitive.”

Bell specifically pointed to how many competitive games the Cardinals lost a season ago and thinks his team’s ability to close out opponents will be crucial for this year’s team. “Last year it was 11 losses by five points or less. We’ve got to put away those close games,” he said. “I think we have the confidence now to do that. We’ve been in those games. Coming down to the wire is what we’re used to.” Even though the season began only days ago, Bell has already seen evidence that his team is much more confident and is looking to use that as a rallying cry going forward. “This year we have that confidence and (our motto) is ‘We Believe,’” Bell said. “I’m starting to see the buy-in that it’s ‘we’ and it’s a team. It doesn’t matter who’s next to me, we’re going to do this together. I see this team really buying into that. … Hopefully it’s that turning point from last year to this year.”
