FVA All Conference honors

State qualifiers Maddy Corbin, a senior, and Kristilee McCadden, a sophomore, each earned all-FVA honors.

Corbin was honored in diving, while McCadden’s award came in the 200-yard freestyle.

McCadden also earned honorable mention honors in thee 100-yard freestyle.

McCadden, Corbin finish 17th, 24th at state

MADISON – Two members of the Fond du Lac swimming and diving team ended their season at state Saturday, and for one, it was a finish to a great prep career.

Maddy Corbin capped off her senior year for the Cardinals with a 24th place finish in the diving competition, ending up with a score of 158.05 in the WIAA Division 1 state meet at the UW Natatorium in Madison. Corbin failed to get out of the first preliminary.

Racine Case’s Tatum Thompkins cruised to the diving title, finishing with a total score of J466.50.

Fondy was also represented by sophomore Kristilee McCadden, who made her first trip to the state meet. McCadden finished 17th in the 200-yard free, finishing with a time of 1 minute, 56.77 seconds – one spot away from contributing a point to the team.

Maddy Corbin, Kristilee McCadden prepare for state meet

When Fond du Lac’s Maddy Corbin and Kristilee McCadden exit the pool on Saturday, it will mark the conclusion of a few things.

For Corbin, it will be the end of a fantastic diving career as part of the Fond du Lac girls swimming team. For McCadden, the final note on a breakout sophomore year. For both, a fitting place to cap the 2015 season.

Corbin and McCadden will both be competing in the WIAA Division 1 state swimming and diving meet on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison. Saturday’s meet is the second straight state appearance for Corbin, a senior, while McCadden is competing on the state stage for the first time.

Last year, Corbin advanced to the final round of the diving competition, finishing 16th. In her first year at state, and only second full year as a diver, she performed admirably under pressure. Now competing at the Natatorium for the second year in a row, qualifying this year based on a fourth-place finish at sectionals, Corbin thinks the experience she gained in 2014 will help this time around. “It’s going to prepare me,” Corbin said. “I’ll know what to look for. Since last year was my first year (at state), I’ll have more of an idea of what to do and how to dive. This won’t be my first year doing it.”

Last year’s performance at state has also given Corbin some higher expectations this season. In surviving two rounds of cuts to make it to the final round in 2014, she proved that she’s among the elite divers in the state. Now she’s hoping to make it back to that top 16 yet again this season. “She’s got every capability she could possibly have for her to get there,” Fond du Lac coach Lauren Plourde said of Corbin.

Although Saturday’s meet likely won’t be the end of Corbin’s diving career, as she hopes to compete in college, it will be the last time she does so for Fond du Lac. However state goes, Corbin is happy to finish up her high school diving experience in Madison. “It’s really an honor, honestly,” Corbin said. “I’m really excited to do this because this is the final step. I’m really excited I can dive my senior year at state. I’m really looking forward to it. That’s a good note to end on.”

McCadden is making her first state appearance this season, qualifying with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle at sectionals. In doing so, McCadden set the school record in the 200 with a time of 1 minute, 55.98 seconds. Only a sophomore, McCadden isn’t intimidated by the pressure of state and expects to perform as well as she has all year. “I’m hoping to get in the top 16,” McCadden said. “I’m seeded in the top 16, so I’d like to finish there.”

As a first-year state competitor, McCadden will likely be experiencing some jitters come race time on Saturday, but Plourde believes that will only fuel her. “Nerves work the best for Kristi,” Plourde said. “She works the best under pressure. I anticipate a lot of nerves and the outcome of that will be what she chooses to do.”

While only Corbin and McCadden will be representing the Cardinals at state on Saturday, Plourde noted that the rest of the team also contributed in getting them there. “I’m super proud of these girls and the dedication and hard work they’ve put in, along with my entire team,” she said. “This is not just a two-individual thing, it’s an entire-team thing. Without the team, these girls would not get to where they are.”

Kalli Behling was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle and Madi Michels took eighth in the 500-yard freestyle.

Fondy’s Maddy Corbin takes aim at another state meet

Growing up, Maddy Corbin was a standout gymnast — flipping, twisting and twirling for hours every day. A few years ago, she decided to give that up. Now, with her senior year at Fond du Lac in full swing, Corbin can still be found flipping, twisting, twirling. Except whereas she used to be landing on a mat, she’s now gracefully plunging into water. And she’s doing it nearly as well as anyone else in the state.

Corbin, a senior diver on the Fond du Lac girls swimming team, is looking to make another appearance at the WIAA Division 1 girls swimming and diving meet this season after advancing to the final round last year. But more importantly, she’s hoping to end her prep diving career on a high note, no matter what form that takes, after getting a late start to the sport.

For much of her youth, Corbin excelled in the sport of gymnastics, advancing all the way to nearly a Level 9 standing (out of 10) in the USA Gymnastics program. However, after 12 years of gymnastics, Corbin wanted to try something else. With her younger brother Grant involved in the Fond du Lac Swim Club, Corbin was eventually introduced to diving coach Bill Jones, who encouraged her to utilize her natural gymnastics ability on the diving board.

Starting her sophomore year, Corbin took her talents to the pool and from the beginning it was pretty evident that it was a perfect match. “It was really helpful because with being almost a Level 9 in gymnastics, I already had a lot of those skills that you needed for the first year of diving,” Corbin said. “It helped me out a lot and then I only progressed from there.”

After a sophomore season learning the ropes, Corbin turned in a terrific junior year in 2014, breaking the school diving record at sectionals and advancing to the state meet — finishing 16th overall with a score of 363.20. To finish in the top 16 at state, Corbin needed to first make the cut after the preliminary and semifinal rounds. Since she began diving a couple years ago, Corbin has progressed tremendously from a raw, natural talent to a refined diver who’s always tweaking and adjusting to make her dives as flawless as possible. “She has an extremely hard work ethic,” Fond du Lac coach Lauren Plourde said. “She loves to perfect her dives and make sure they are perfect. She’s a perfectionist in that sense. She is diving impeccably.”

Corbin specifically mentioned that her approach — the moment leading up to the actual dive — has improved significantly since she began. “My approach has become a lot better,” she said. “I’ve kind of learned more of the fundamentals of diving because I’ve attended different camps, so that’s been helpful. I’ve learned a lot over the couple years that I’ve been doing it.”

Because of her gymnastics experience, Corbin pointed to twist-heavy dives as the ones she’s strongest at, but has worked at expanding her repertoire. Although Corbin’s gymnastic ability certainly plays a role in her success as a diver, Plourde noted that natural athleticism alone didn’t carry her to this point — both on the mat and on the board.

“Her gymnastics background has a lot to do with it,” Plourde admitted. “On top of that, her perfectionism as it is — she can take it from the gymnastics standpoint, apply it to a diving board and then do the dive the way she needs to do the dive. Is it perfect every time? No. But who can do something perfect every single time? Also, her willingness to learn. She wants to be challenged, she wants to learn things and perfect it from there.”

After such a successful junior season, neither Corbin nor her coach shied away from laying out some high expectations for 2015. “I would love if she can qualify again and make that top 16,” Plourde said. “That would mean a lot to her and a lot to her family and me as a coach. … Maddy’s got her own agenda, she always has. Where it goes from here, to state, to wherever, is up to Maddy.”

Corbin went even further, saying she’d like to be in the top 10 at state, assuming she’s able to qualify once again. However, she did say she’s still playing catch-up a bit on her diving skills after missing a significant amount of time during the summer, going through an experience no teenager should have to deal with.

First, in July, Corbin’s grandfather died and then only weeks after that, younger brother Grant died in a four-wheeler accident in Missouri — less than a year after surviving an accident in which he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Fond du Lac. Corbin is using her brother’s memory and the fighting spirit he showed as inspiration as she closes out her high school diving career. “I know that he would want me to push through everything because when he got into his car accident last year, nobody ever stopped believing in him and he didn’t stop fighting,” she said. “I’m definitely using that as inspiration.”

Corbin will undoubtedly take that attitude with her after high school as well, where she hopes to dive on scholarship in college, mentioning Minnesota State University Moorhead, Northern Michigan University and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay as potential landing spots. Wherever she ends up, her dedication on the gymnastics mat, quick ascension and willingness to learn on the diving board and ability to fight through tragedy have turned Corbin into someone well-prepared for life after high school.

“She will do wonderful in whatever she decides to do in life, whether she’s going to continue with the diving route or she’s going to do something else,” Plourde said. “She will be successful at whatever she ends up doing and she’ll be greatly missed.”

Plourde steps in to lead Fond du Lac swim team

When someone new takes over a program, the unfamiliarity between coach and athletes can sometimes create a bit of an awkward period. Fond du Lac girls swimming coach Lauren Plourde didn’t have to worry about that. After serving as an assistant coach for the Cardinals for the past three seasons, Plourde made the step up to head coach this season and said the transition from former coach Glen McBride was a very easy move. “There’s definitely a good transition with that,” Plourde said. “The girls know me, they know how I work. We’re very much, ‘Let’s get our work done.’”

Plourde, who said swimming has been a part of her life since she “was 18 months old” and was a WIAA state qualifier in her prep days at Monroe High School, has embraced the added responsibility that comes in taking over a program. “There is a lot more responsibility on me and that’s something I really like,” Plourde said. “Coming up with workouts, putting a meet lineup together. Figuring out what girl goes where is a giant puzzle and it’s a fun puzzle for me to figure out.” Plourde said that much of the Cardinals’ lineup is still working itself out through the trials of early season practice, but there is at least one event where Fond du Lac’s entry is already set.

Senior Maddy Corbin qualified for state in diving last year — making the finals and finishing 16th overall — and Plourde sees even better performances coming from her this season. “She looks very, very good. She’s looking forward to the season and it’s something she’s worked very hard for to perfect her diving,” Plourde said. “We’re looking forward to watching her.” The new coach also believes the Corbin’s state trip last season has had an effect on the rest of team, which could put the Cardinals in line for a memorable 2015 campaign. “That was Maddy’s specific goal and I know a lot of girls have said, ‘This is what I want to do,’” Plourde said. “They really want to put their minds to (making it to state).”
