Fond du Lac boys hoops’ rally falls short
FOND DU LAC – A slow start and inconsistent play throughout were too much for the Fond du Lac boys basketball team to overcome on Thursday night.
Appleton West took a double-digit lead in the first half and eventually extended it to over 20 points in the second before holding off a Fond du Lac rally as the Terrors defeated the Cardinals 80-72 in Fox Valley Association play on Thursday night at Fond du Lac.
“No. 1, I thought our transition defense was poor early. A lot of easy baskets (for Appleton West),” Fond du Lac coach Mark Ziebell said of the Cardinals’ sluggish start. “I thought we had some possessions where we had two guys flying to the ball, leaving some shooters open. I didn’t think we got back and protected the hoop very well. I thought our post defense wasn’t very good. … We’re starting to see a theme now. Slow start and having to fight like crazy to get back in it. We’ve got to challenge our guys as coaches to get them out to a better start.”
Appleton West (10-8, 7-7 Fox Valley Association) never trailed in Thursday’s game, taking an 18-8 lead midway through the first half and going into halftime up 37-25.
The Terrors’ biggest advantage came midway through the second half at 59-37. Fond du Lac (10-8, 8-6 FVA) was able to chip away over the final 10 minutes or so, closing to within eight points on a few occasions, but couldn’t get over that hump.
Although the Cardinals did make the game interesting toward the end, that wasn’t much consolation to Ziebell.
“It’s putting it together for two full halves and at this point in the year, we should have that down,” he said. “As coaches, we’ve got to figure out a way where our kids will do that for a full game. … We’re starting to see that pattern and we’ve got to correct that.”
Caleb Goldstein led the Cardinals with a game-high 31 points, while Luke Loewe added 24 points. The Goldstein/Loewe combo sparked Fond du Lac’s comeback, but it still wasn’t enough to make up for the Cards’ woes prior to that.
Four players scored in double figures for Appleton West, with Jack and Will Mahoney leading the way with 15 points apiece. Blake Pahlow chipped in 14 points and Eli Hartjes had 13 points.
Although the end of the regular season is near, Ziebell knows there’s enough time for his team to bounce back and start playing more consistent basketball by the start of the playoffs.
“We’ve got four regular season games left and then the tournament starts, so we’ve got plenty of time to get it right,” he said. “We’ll work hard to do it. We’ve got kids who are good kids, coachable kids. All the pieces are there, we’ve just got to put it together and start doing it.”

Fond du Lac boys hoops falls to Neenah
FOND DU LAC – The shots simply weren’t falling like normal for the Fond du Lac boys basketball team on Friday night.
Whether it was Neenah’s defense, a slower pace of play or just an off game, the Cardinals couldn’t seem to get into an offensive flow.
It was the difference in the contest.
Neenah had three players score in double digits and the Rockets held off Fond du Lac down the stretch as they edged the Cardinals 60-54 in Fox Valley Association play Friday night at Fond du Lac.
“Offensively, I felt we weren’t patient,” Fond du Lac coach Mark Ziebell said. “I thought when we were able to move the ball to multiple sides of the floor, three or four times we were able to get some looks. But we weren’t patient. You contrast that with what (Neenah) was doing offensively, being very patient, willing to make multiple passes to break us down. We didn’t do that and I think that’s something we’ve got to get to come tournament time. They’re all going to be grinders and we’ve got to be willing to grind on the offensive end.”
Neenah (9-7, 6-6 Fox Valley Association) took a 9-8 lead on a Jordan Mascal bucket early in the first half and would stay in front the rest of the way, though the Rockets could never push beyond a nine-point advantage.
Fond du Lac (9-7, 7-5 FVA) was able to cut Neenah’s lead to a single point late in the first half and continuously threatened in the second half, but couldn’t ever quite jump on top.
Every time the Cardinals made a bit of a run to gain momentum, the Rockets would quash it with a basket on the other end or convert at the free-throw line — going 17 of 24 for the game.
Mascal led the Rockets with 17 points, while Logan Morrow chipped in 16 points and Joe Jung had 14 points. Although Neenah wasn’t flashy offensively, hitting only a single 3-pointer, the Rockets milked the clock, got to the charity stripe and made the Cardinals’ defense work.
“I thought defensively we didn’t have the same energy or ball pressure that we’ve had here recently, certainly the last game with Hortonville, and we’ve got to make that a habit,” Ziebell said. “It can’t be that light switch situation. But I think our kids will respond. We’ve responded all year. We’ve had some adversity and we’ve always bounced back. But we learned a lot about ourselves today.”
Luke Loewe paced Fond du Lac with a game-high 18 points, while Sam Fredrickson chipped in 15 points. Caleb Goldstein added nine points.
The Cardinals’ 54 points on Friday tied its lowest point total in a game during the 2016-17 season. Fond du Lac also scored 54 points in a loss to Oshkosh North back on Dec. 8.
“Drew (Jorgensen) is a very good shooter and he didn’t shoot very well. Caleb is a great shooter and he didn’t shoot it very well,” Ziebell said. “Sure, we missed shots. Certainly you’ve got to credit their defense tonight, too. They had us well-scouted and knew what we were trying to get to. I think that’s where that patience comes in. Taking a good shot and then really working to get a great shot. I think that’s what we have to focus on. … When that shot’s not falling, that’s where that patience becomes even more important. I just didn’t feel we were willing to do that on a consistent basis today.”

Fond du Lac boys basketball fall to Oshkosh North 89-74
FOND DU LAC – Facing the top squad in the state on Friday night, the Fond du Lac boys basketball team needed to be close to perfect. The Cardinals battled hard and never gave in, but they made a few too many mistakes.
Tyrese Haliburton and Quincy Anderson both scored 23 points as Oshkosh North took an early lead and held off a few Fond du Lac challenges en route to a 89-74 win over the Cardinals in Fox Valley Association play on Friday night at Fond du Lac.
“I just thought we didn’t execute a lot of things we wanted to do coming into the game,” Fond du Lac coach Mark Ziebell said. “I thought offensively in the first half, we turned the ball over quite a bit. I thought that really hurt us and that was one of the things we talked about from the very beginning. We fell behind early.”
A Sam Fredrickson bucket to start the game gave Fond du Lac (8-6, 6-4 Fox Valley Association) the initial advantage, but that would be the only time the Cardinals led on Friday.
Philip Flory came back with a 3-pointer to put Oshkosh North (14-0, 10-0 FVA), the top-ranked team in Division 1 in the latest Associated Press poll, ahead 3-2 and the Spartans quickly built a double-digit edge on the strength of terrific shooting and transition offense. Fond du Lac did claw its way back, cutting the deficit to 32-29 late in the first half on a Peyton Head basket. But Oshkosh North responded. Following Head’s bucket, Anderson hit a shot and then Brett Ellestad drained consecutive 3-pointers to put the Spartans back up by 11 points.
Anderson tipped in a basket at the buzzer to send Oshkosh North into halftime with a 45-36 advantage. Another Head bucket to begin the second half trimmed the Spartans’ lead to seven points, but that was the closest Fond du Lac could get as Oshkosh North maintained at least a nine-point edge the rest of the way. Apart from Haliburton and Anderson, who both hit three 3-pointers and were close to unstoppable for periods of Friday’s game, Shane Wissink added 15 points for the Spartans. Flory chipped in 12 points and Ellestad had 11.
“Defensively, I didn’t think we did a good job,” Ziebell said. “I mean we almost gave up 100 points. We didn’t get out to shooters, we left air space. We didn’t get tight to their shooters. I just didn’t think we executed a lot of the things we wanted to do on either end of the floor.”
Luke Loewe paced the Cardinals with a game-high 29 points, hitting four 3-pointers and almost single-handedly keeping Fond du Lac within striking distance for stretches of the second half. Drew Jorgensen added 19 points for Fondy, knocking down five 3-pointers. Fredrickson chipped in 12 points and Head had 10.
“I felt we worked and played a little bit harder in the second half,” Ziebell said. “I didn’t think we played as hard as we could have in the first half. Our kids have been resilient all year. Every time we’ve had a tough loss, we’ve responded and learned something from that loss. It’s made us better. We got beat by a top-tier team in the state today and our expectations as coaches is our kids will respond. We’ll learn from this and come back better.”

Fond du Lac boys hoops knocks off Kaukauna 79 – 78
FOND DU LAC – In the closing seconds, with the game on the line, Luke Loewe delivered. The defense did the rest.
Loewe made a spinning layup with under 10 seconds remaining and the Fond du Lac boys basketball team’s defense made one final stand as the Cardinals edged Kaukauna 79-78 in Fox Valley Association play before a packed house Saturday night at Fond du Lac. “We had a flare screen coming, they had that covered, and I got it in the post. I felt good about it, but as soon as it left my hands, I thought I missed it for sure,” Loewe said of his game-winning basket. “I honestly thought I missed it, so I’m thankful that it went in.”
After Loewe’s basket, Kaukauna had a chance to win or tie the game with a few seconds remaining. Star point guard Jordan McCabe was able to drive the lane and pass to an open teammate, but Fond du Lac’s Peyton Head swooped in for the block to seal the game as time ran out. “After (Loewe) made the basket, I looked up at the clock and saw about eight seconds left and I sprinted back and stood in the paint,” Fond du Lac forward Sam Fredrickson said. “I saw McCabe come down and expected that nobody was going to shoot the ball except for him. He splits this trap and I look up and it’s just me, McCabe and another guy in the post and McCabe dished the ball off. I was there, but I might have gotten there too late and Peyton Head made an amazing block to come back and help save that play.”
In a back-and-forth contest against Kaukauna (6-5, 5-4 Fox Valley Association), the reigning WIAA Division 2 state champion and the No. 9 team in Division 2 in the latest Associated Press poll, Fond du Lac (7-5, 5-3 FVA) made the last couple plays to earn a crucial victory. With the Galloping Ghosts clutching a 78-77 lead with 23.4 seconds remaining, freshman guard Keaton Ferris stepped to the foul line in a one-and-one situation, having a chance to increase Kaukauna’s lead to three points.
But Ferris missed the front end of the bonus and Loewe brought down the rebound, setting up the final sequence. Posting up on Bailey McDaniel, Loewe spun into the rim unopposed when McDaniel crashed to the floor in an attempt to draw the charge. Loewe’s shot rattled around, but eventually dropped through the net to provide the final difference in Saturday’s game. Prior to that, it was the battle everyone was hoping for, with a fast-paced tempo and terrific shooting on both ends of the court.
Neither team was able to pull away to a significant advantage, with the largest lead being only a seven-point edge by Fond du Lac early in the second half.
Both the Ghosts and Cardinals traded buckets for much of the game and even when McCabe had to leave with foul trouble for a long stretch in the second half, Kaukauna hung tough.
Fredrickson led Fond du Lac with 20 points, proving to be a nightmare near the basket for the Ghosts’ defense. Loewe finished with 17 points and Caleb Goldstein added 11 points. Head chipped in nine points for the Cardinals and Devon Krzanowski had seven. Fond du Lac was an impressive 18-of-22 from the free-throw line.
McCabe had 23 points to pace Kaukauna, but scored only four of them in the second half. Eric Carl added 20 points for the Galloping Ghosts — accounting for five of Kaukauna’s 12 3-pointers. Albeit just one win in a grueling FVA campaign,
Fond du Lac coach Mark Ziebell knows this one is special for his squad as it moves into the final month of the regular season. “Certainly when you beat a team the quality of Kaukauna, with the coaching that they do and the personnel that they have, that’s a great win,” Ziebell said. “I think our kids are just continuing to grow and get better. I also saw some poise today, I don’t think we panicked when we got down. … We just had to make a couple plays at the end and we got out of there with a win.”

Fond du Lac boys hoops crushes Appleton North
FOND DU LAC – It didn’t take long for the Fond du Lac boys basketball team to take control against Appleton North.
Midway through the first half, the Cardinals were up by double digits and rolling. That roll didn’t stop until the final buzzer.
Ten different players scored for Fond du Lac as the Cardinals crushed Appleton North 80-51 in Fox Valley Association play on Tuesday night at Fond du Lac.
“I just though the kids really had a lot of effort, especially in the first half defensively,” Fond du Lac coach Mark Ziebell said. “It’s something that we had talked about and worked on the last few days of practice. I thought we were really aggressive on the ball. … I thought we carried over a lot of what we worked on at least the last couple days at practice.”
Two free throws from Jack Rusch put Fond du Lac (4-4, 2-2 Fox Valley Association) up 21-11 in the first half and the Cardinals led by double figures the rest of the way.
Fond du Lac went into halftime up 38-23 on Appleton North (2-6, 0-5 FVA) and the Lightning couldn’t get any closer than 15 points in the second half.
Rusch and Jack Cole each scored 13 points to lead the Cardinals offensively, while Caleb Goldstein added 12 points. Drew Jorgensen and Devon Krzanowski scored 10 points apiece.
Sam Fredrickson and Luke Loewe both had eight points.
“Offense isn’t our problem, in terms of personnel,” Ziebell said. “We’ve got guys that can put it in the basket. I think that (balance) should happen more often because you obviously make yourself that much harder to defend when you’ve got multiple guys on the floor that can put it in the hoop.”
After a disappointing loss to Manitowoc Lincoln over the holiday break, Tuesday’s victory was an excellent start to 2017 for Fond du Lac and is something Ziebell is hoping to build on.
“We were really disappointed in how we played last Friday against Manitowoc and the kids here at Fond du Lac always seem to respond,” Ziebell said. “Now hopefully we learned something and this is how we can be now the rest of the year. This how we need to be in our conference just to survive, let alone win games. We need to bring that same intensity.”

Caleb Goldstein and Drew Jorgensen both had 13 points as well for Fond du Lac.

Oshkosh North boys grind out win over Fondy 65 – 54
OSHKOSH – It wasn’t a pretty win or an easy win or the kind of win where everyone walks out of the gym at the end of the night without a worry about the next opponent. But it was a win. And Oshkosh North coach Frank Schade will take it.
The Spartans committed nine turnovers in the second half and saw a double-digit sliced to three points but were able to hold off a pesky Fond du Lac squad, 65-54, in a Fox Valley Association boys basketball game on Thursday night. “I was very pleased with that part of it. We hit some adversity, the momentum changed, they hit some really big shots and we bent but we didn’t break,” Schade said. “It was kind of an ugly win but it was a win and we got some things to learn from it.” Philip Flory led a balanced Oshkosh North attack with 17 points, while Tyrese Haliburton and Shane Wissink each added 16 points.
Matt Hickey also chipped in eight points, while saddling much of the defensive responsibility against Fond du Lac’s 6-foot-7 center Sam Fredrickson. “He’s giving up a lot of inches and he’s giving up a lot of age because (Fredrickson) is a senior and a very good basketball player,” Schade said, “I thought Hicks held his own in there which was good.”
Fredrickson finished with a team-high 16 points but scored only six points in the second half and wasn’t able to get many clean looks at the basket. “He’s a big kid and he’s skilled, but Matt does a great job bodying him up and getting physical inside,” Wissink said. “Props to him.”
The Spartans also tried to slow down the Cardinal offense by using a variety of defenses in the game. Along with the traditional 1-3-1 look, North tried to matchup with Fond du Lac with some different zone looks and keep them off-balance. “We had to show them different looks,” Haliburton said. “They are a really athletic team so the more looks we showed them, hopefully the more they would have to adjust and it worked pretty well tonight.”
North went on an 11-1 run late in the first half to break a 16-16 tie and went ahead 35-23 on Flory’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the left corner. Flory then opened the second half with another 3, but the Cardinals didn’t go away that easy.
Fond du Lac got three 3-pointers from Drew Jorgensen in a 13-3 run that sliced the Spartans lead to 45-41. A Wissink 3-pointer stemmed the tide and North regained a nine-point lead with 5:30 remaining.
“Every shot you hit gives you a little momentum,” Wissink said. “We just have to come together as a team every time we faced adversity and we played better as a team in stretches (in the second half) and that was good.” That lead was shrunk back to three with 4:35 left, but Quincy Anderson’s acrobatic putback of a missed free throw started a 10-0 run – a spurt that included a Haliburton steal and dunk – that all but sealed the win. “Second half was really sloppy. We have a lot of things to clean up before next game,” Haliburton said. “Good teams find a way to win no matter what, and we won but we have to just keep working.”

Oshkosh North 35 30 – 65
Fond du Lac: Fredrickson 16, Jorgensen 15, Spletter 2, Goldstein 5, Head 10, Cole 6. 3-pointers: 9 (Jorgensen 5m cole 2, Goldstein, Head). FTs: 3-8. Fouls: 12. Fouled out: Cole.
Oshkosh North: Flory 17, Haliburton 16, Wissink 16, Hickey 8, Anderson 6, Ellestad 2. 3-pointers: 6 (Flory 2, Wissink 2, Haliburton 2). FTs: 13-14. Fouls: 15.
Fond du Lac boys hoops no match for Menomonee Falls 81 – 61
FOND DU LAC – A slow start and inconsistent play throughout was too much for the Fond du Lac boys basketball team to overcome in its season opener on Tuesday night.
Menomonee Falls jumped out to a double-digit lead early in the first half and never gave it up as the Indians cruised to an 81-61 win over Fond du Lac in nonconference action. “We gave up 13 offensive rebounds in the first half, so it’s hard to make any kind of comeback when you’re allowing teams second and third chances,” Fond du Lac coach Mark Ziebell said.
Fond du Lac was playing on Tuesday without star point guard Luke Loewe, who was involved in a car crash a little over a week ago. Loewe, a College of William & Mary recruit, is a senior transfer from Ripon.
Menomonee Falls (2-0) took a 22-11 lead halfway through the first half and never let that advantage dip into single digits the rest of the way, going into halftime up 44-27. Cross Wilson led the Indians with 15 points, while Nate Schuster added 11. Trevon Williams and Matt Henningsen chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Caleb Goldstein paced Fond du Lac offensively (0-1), scoring 13 points. Jack Cole added nine points and Ian Spletter and Jack Rusch had six each.
Menomonee Falls forced over 20 turnovers on Tuesday, another large factor in the blowout win. “I thought we handled their full-court press well at times,” Ziebell said. “But as we got fatigued, our cutting became poor. The attention to detail was poor, which led to some more easy baskets for them. I thought they were tougher than we were in every aspect of the game.”
Although it was a disappointing start to the season for a Fond du Lac squad that has high hopes in 2016-17, the Cardinals certainly aren’t going to dwell on the loss. “It’s early in the season,” Ziebell said. “We’ve got 21 games to play. We’re going to work on becoming tougher and I think the closer to that we get, I think we’ll be OK. We’re not hitting the panic button after one game, but clearly we’ve got to a better job being tough.”
Fond du Lac travels to Oshkosh West on Friday for its Fox Valley Association opener.

Prep boys basketball season gets underway
The 2016-17 prep boys basketball season gets underway this week with nonconference games for a variety of local teams.
Here’s a flyover look at teams in the area.
Fox Valley Association
Fond du Lac: Despite finishing seventh in the Fox Valley Association last year, losing in the regional round of the WIAA Division 1 playoffs and posting a 9-15 overall record, things are looking up for the Cardinals this season.
With the return of seniors Caleb Goldstein (13.8 ppg) and Sam Fredrickson (12.9 ppg), Fond du Lac has a strong core of experienced players that should put them in the mix to be in the upper half of the FVA.
Drew Jorgensen (9.8 ppg) and Jack Cole (5.6 ppg) are also back for the Cardinals.
Ripon senior transfer Luke Loewe, a William & Mary commit and Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 3 all-state selection as a sophomore, joins Fond du Lac this year, but was involved in a car accident on Friday night.
Loewe’s injuries and playing status to begin this season are unclear.
Jake Walgenbach (12.1 ppg) does depart for Fond du Lac.
