Senior Spotlight | Noah Tagliapietra among state’s best
FOND DU LAC – For someone considered among the best high school distance runners in the state, Noah Tagliapietra’s career is basically in its infant stages.
Tagliapietra, now in his senior season on the Fond du Lac boys track and field team, only joined the sport as a sophomore.
This past fall, Tagliapietra ran cross country for the first time.
Most distance runners, especially elite ones, have been doing it for years and years. It takes time to build up endurance. Developing your body — through a good diet and miles upon miles of running — is not a quick process.
The fact that Tagliapietra is at this point despite only being a competitive runner for about two years is astounding.
Now, it’s not like he entered the sport having no experience as a distance runner. Tagliapietra had been playing soccer since a young age and while that’s not a sport solely dedicated to running, it’s about as close as you can get.
But his rise to the upper echelon of distance runners has been dramatic.
So, what is it about Tagliapietra that makes him so good?
“People always ask me that,” Fond du Lac boys track and field coach Kevin Braun said. “He’s a ball of energy. He’s nonstop once he gets going and the faster he runs, it just seems that’s what drives him. He just wants to get faster and faster all the time.”
There wasn’t any crazy inspiration for Tagliapietra’s dive into competitive distance running at the high school level. The winter of his sophomore year, he heard about a meeting for the track team and decided to join.
While he had injury problems during his first season, he really came into his own last spring as a junior.
Qualifying for the 2016 WIAA Division 1 state track and field meet in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, Tagliapietra established himself as a force to be reckoned with this past June in La Crosse.
He finished 16th at state in the 1,600 with a time of 4:24.47 and was 12th in the 3,200 with a time of 9:31.09.
With an obviously bright future in distance running, Tagliapietra had to make a tough decision in the fall — continue with soccer or join cross country. Ultimately he made a choice that would best help his running career, joining the cross team for his senior year.
“It was tough, but at the end of the day I kind of figured I’d do what was best for me and it’s paid off,” Tagliapietra said. “I really don’t have any regrets about it.”
That said, it wasn’t necessarily an easy transition for Tagliapietra into cross country. Sure, he had experience from track that helped him, but it’s a whole new ballgame running longer distances, up hills, on grass and against a mass of other competitors.
“It was tough,” he said. “With track, you want to get out there and go because they’re shorter. I think my first race (in cross country), I raced the first mile and I was just done. They’re similar in that it’s running, but they’re two totally different — it sounds funny — but they’re different sports.”
It certainly didn’t take Tagliapietra long to get the hang of cross country, as he finished first at a Division 1 sectional meet to qualify for state and then took 22nd overall out of 189 runners at the WIAA Division 1 state cross country meet in October in Wisconsin Rapids, finishing with a time of 16:21.25.
He’s hoping his experience in cross country will help propel him this spring during track. Tagliapietra has already had a bunch of success to start the 2017 season — taking first place at a number of outdoor and indoor meets, while finishing second in both the 800- and 1,600-meter runs at the prestigious Wisconsin Track and Field Indoor State Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
“Any time you can race, you get better at it,” he said. “You get 10 more races over the cross season, those will help me in track and the different experiences I was in, it will pay off.”
Next year, Tagliapietra will be heading to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to run cross country and track at the NCAA Division I level for the Panthers — something that seemed almost inconceivable not that long ago.
“If you would have told me I’d be a DI athlete, I would have asked ‘What sport?’” Tagliapietra said with a smile. “It came out of nowhere and I’m really blessed. I have a lot of people to thank and it’s just been really great.”
Braun said he’ll miss the leadership and positive energy Tagliapietra has brought to the team in his three short years with the squad and has had a positive impact on the Cardinals as a whole.
“He’s a great leader to have on the team,” Braun said. “All the guys like him. He’s got great energy. When you feel down, he’ll just grab you and pick you right back up and get you running again.”
