Changes bring optimism for Fond du Lac Senior power forward Jonah Diette said the best word to describe the 2018-19 Fond du Lac Cardinals basketball program is unproven. They have a new head coach in Eric Henry, who was hired as the interim coach less than two months ago. They’ve lost five seniors to graduation and key offensive player Quintin Winterfeldt to Waupun. The team has just three seniors compared to five juniors and one sophomore on the roster. “No one is expecting anything from us, but I think everyone is going to come together, and we’re going to put something great together,” Diette said. “I feel like we’re going to surprise some people,” senior power forward Bryce Holz added. “I think we’ve got a lot of skilled juniors that didn’t get much playing time last year or didn’t get any last year.” With the many changes to the coaching staff and roster, Henry said it’s a next-man-up mentality to the start of the season. Losing Winterfeldt to Waupun is one of the biggest challenges facing the new roster. Senior point guard Caden Krug said Winterfeldt most likely would have been Fond du Lac’s leading scorer and top offensive target. Holz said the shoes of the 6-foot-4 Winterfeldt are big shoes to fill. “We have some junior kids and sophomore kids that haven’t had a lot of experience obviously, but this is their opportunity to do so,” Henry said. Henry took over a basketball program that had a losing season under Mark Ziebell in 2017-18. The Cardinals advanced to the second round of the WIAA postseason before a 55-42 loss to Arrowhead. While Henry said it was a surprise to take over as head coach, he was familiar with the program. Henry has coached in the Fond du Lac school district for 15 years and has coached freshman and junior varsity basketball, seeing the varsity members grow as basketball players. “I know them quite well,” Henry said. “To see how they handle themselves in practice now, I think they’re more mature. I think a lot of them are ready to take on that leadership role.” Henry has coached Krug through all his years of high school basketball. Krug said Henry’s mind for the game and experience working with many players on the roster will be an asset. Diette added that the energy Henry brings is something players hadn’t seen before. “He makes the kids work hard and give it everything they’ve got, which makes us better at the end of the day. It’s different than the previous coach,” Diette said. “It’s something new, a different play style, a different energy and way of attacking things.” Henry is implementing a new offense that focuses on moving and reacting to what the defense gives players. “Having automatics that kids know what to do when certain things happen on defense,” Henry said. “It’s really reading and reacting to what the defense does and taking advantage of that.” Diette, who is 6-foot-2, played a post role in previous offenses. Now, the Cardinals will be playing a 5-out scheme. Holz said the new offense will bring players more on the perimeter with no set guys in the middle. “We don’t have a lot of height, so we’re going to try to use our quickness and other abilities to our advantage,” Holz said. Krug said the new offensive style will require transitions and adjustments for players to find their roles, but he believes the Cardinals’ greatest strength will be their shooting. Fond du Lac tips off the season with a nonconference game against Sheboygan North on Saturday. The Cardinals remain at home Tuesday for their first Fox Valley Association game against Kaukauna. With teams such as returning Division 2 state champion Kaukauna and Division 1 state champion Oshkosh North, Henry said the competition in the FVA is always high. “I don’t there’s a league anywhere that’s better,” Henry said. “It restacks with talent. Every night you go out, and you’ve got to play every night.” Krug said the greatest challenge of playing in the FVA is if the Cardinals can step up to match the physicality. The main challenge that Fond du Lac faces, according to Krug, is height. “Our tallest guy is only 6-4, so we have to be big on the glass so we don’t give off too many offensive rebounds, give teams too many second chances that could switch the game and make it a very bad game really quickly,” Krug said. Krug said he’s anxious to get the season going. “I want to go play because it’s my senior year. It’s going to be my last first game,” Krug said The beginning of the season may be rocky with the roster still getting familiar with each other and with a new play style. Henry said these first few games will be focusing on finding an identity and seeing what the Cardinals can bring from there. “You have to be who you are and try to find who you are. You can’t worry too much about your opponent right now,” Henry said. “My biggest thing is I want to see the kids playing together. To me, that’s the No. 1 goal, just knowing these kids and knowing where we are as a program.”
