The Cardinal football team now takes on #6 seed Sun Prairie in a Level 2 game in Fond du Lac Friday Nov. 1 @ 7:00

#2 seed Fond du Lac (9-1 overall) rolled past # 7 seed Arrowhead 45-14 on Friday, shutting out the Warhawks in the second half of the WIAA first-round game at Fruth Field.

Fondy moves on to host No. 6 seed Sun Prarie (7-3 overall, 6-3 Big Eight). Sun Prairie defeated No. 3 seed Verona 51-28.

The first playoff win under first-year Fond du Lac head coach Steven Jorgensen was a well-played game from all three Fondy units. The Fondy team and coaching staff had a frenzied moment once they sealed the game at the end of the fourth quarter. Arrowhead (4-6 overall) and Fondy began the season ranked high, but they will finish the season extremely different. “That’s a 7 seed, but that’s no 7 seed,” Jorgensen said. “They’re huge. They’ve got a million kids. They’ve got a ton of speed. We knew we were in for a battle. Our kids don’t flinch, though. You could see the size difference. They don’t flinch. They played their butts off for four quarters. I loved it. We had one goal: to get the win. They got the win. I’m a fired up coach right now.”

Fondy quarterback Kyle Walljasper accounted for five of the Cardinals’ seven scores and was equally as excited. “We came into this and knew they were going to be bigger,” Walljasper said. “We knew they were going to be faster. But we knew that we had the better mentality. Our guys were hurting, but we just pushed through and keep fighting. It showed on the scoreboard.” Walljasper threw for four touchdowns and scored one touchdown rushing despite taking several hard blows early and often. “He’s a beast,” a pumped up Jorgensen said. “He’s our guy. Kyle Walljasper is our guy. He’s a a tough kid. He got hit a lot. We knew he’d get hit a lot. And he’s just running and running around. He’s limping around. But it’s all right. He’s built for this.”

No play from Friday better shows that than Walljasper’s third touchdown passing. On third-and-8 late in the second quarter, Walljasper rolled out to his right and threw a deep 47-yard touchdown pass on the dime to Tyler Collien from sideline to sideline. Walljasper took a massive hit on the play and watched from the turf as Collien scored, but Fondy went into half up 28-14.

Justin Scheberl was perfect on extra points and made a 28-yard field goal.

On Fondy’s first possession, Walljasper threw a 40-yard touchdown to Caeleb Plante on a post route, starting a 21-0 run.

The Fondy defense woke up on the second Arrowhead drive and forced a three-and-out. Walljasper ran a 1-yard rushing touchdown for Fondy’s second straight score.

Good defense turned into more points for Fondy when Collien intercepted Darrow in Arrowhead territory giving Fondy great field position. Michael Schomisch was the beneficiary of Walljasper’s first second-quarter touchdown pass, hauling in a 5-yard score.

The Cardinals struck again on the 47-yard throw-and-catch from Walljasper to Collien. “I have to give that to the game plan. Coaches watched the film. We knew where they we’re going to be. And we just hit the routes,” Walljasper said.

Braelon Allen, a safety on defense, made a leaping interception in the first half. On offense, Allen the running back capped an eight-minute Fondy drive in the fourth quarter with a 5-yard touchdown.

Head Coach Steven Jorgensen said that it has been fun to watch this group tick off season goals.

“We had a higher touted group kind of last year and a big senior class,” Jorgensen said. “This was kind of the group after that group. I think they felt kind of counted out. They play with a chip on their shoulder and they just want to prove themselves. “They know the work that they’ve put in. They know all the time they’ve spent together. They had a goal to make the playoffs. They did that. They had a goal to win a conference championship and they accomplished that.”

Cardinals running back Braelon Allen, “It feels great. We had a lot of doubters coming into the season and we didn’t focus on proving everyone wrong, but proving ourselves right.”

Fond du Lac’s secondary came up with big plays.

Then in the third quarter with Fond du Lac up 24-7, Neenah got down to Fond du Lac’s 21-yard line only to have Tyler Collien pick off an Elkin pass in the end zone. “We’ve been challenging our secondary all year,” Jorgensen said. “I’ve think we’ve done a great job all year of stopping the run, which has made teams throw the ball on us. We’ve stopped the run. We’ve limited teams from running the ball on us, so they (the secondary) have been challenged a lot. They’re going to be continued to be challenged a lot. “I like the way they stepped up tonight. A few guys got beat here and there, but there were guys who made big plays knocking the ball down.”

The Cardinals were having great success running the ball.

Braelon Allen carried 21 times for 248 yards and quarterback Kyle Walljasper ran 23 times for 139 yards behind a Fond du Lac offensive line that isn’t necessarily the biggest. “They’re doing great, a lot of holes are opening up,” Allen said. “It’s easy to run behind them.”

What was the 200-pound sophomore running back seeing when he’d get the handoff from Walljasper? “Lots of green, lots of green,” Allen said. “There were huge holes.”

Offensive line paves way to Fond du Lac victory

When push came to shove, the Fond du Lac football team went to the guys who do it best – the offensive line. The big boys up front were critical in putting away Friday’s game in the Cardinals’ 42-28 victory over Hortonville at Fruth Field. The win improves Fond du Lac to 4-1 overall and has it tied atop the Valley Football Association-South (3-1) with Hortonville.

The offensive line of Paul Thielman, Elijah Diedrich, Levi Liedke, Louis Wagner-Lang and Moses Riehl, along with tight end Mack Sebert and fullback Owen Nitkowski, helped pave the way for Zavier Ellis’ 38-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach.

“We talked about trying to be a 12-round football team and I thought we took the first seven rounds,” Fond du Lac coach Steven Jorgensen said. “Then we kind of thought it was over and gave them five rounds and they came within a possession there and I just didn’t think we kept on the accelerator there enough.” Ellis’ touchdown capped a seven-play, 78-yard drive that answered Hortonville’s furious comeback which saw the Polar Bears erase a 35-7 deficit and pull to within 35-28 on Kyle Allen’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Balboa with 5:02 left. That set up Fond du Lac’s final touchdown drive, with quarterback Kyle Walljasper running five consecutive times before handing off to Ellis for a 9-yard run and the final score.

Walljasper finished with 157 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns, with Ellis totaling 208 yards on 22 carries and the two scores. “I looked at (Walljasper) and said we’re going to put it on your shoulders,” Jorgensen said. “And I gave it to him about five straight times. He’s our horse and he wanted the ball. And then Zavier at the end, that was good to see the answer we had at the end of the game.”

Fond du Lac senior linebacker Fletcher Haus had 11 tackles to lead the defense and said that his team’s tough schedule has helped prepare the Cardinals for moments like Friday. Fond du Lac has already played top teams like Franklin and Kimberly and has another next Friday against Appleton North.  “That helps a lot,” Haus said. “We have a lot of tough games during the season and towards the end (Hortonville was) wearing down a little bit, and that helps our team a little bit. We get it going and we have endurance to end games.”

One of the state’s most intense rivalries added another chapter to its recent storybook Friday.

Kimberly slipped past Fond du Lac 34-31 in overtime with Caleb Frazer’s 6-yard touchdown run the deciding score at Papermaker Stadium in a game featuring two of the top teams in the state.

The loss came just over a year after the Cardinals had ended Kimberly’s 70-game win streak, also at Papermaker Stadium.

“The guys battled,” Fond du Lac coach Steven Jorgensen said. “We’re undersized on both the offensive and defensive lines. And we battled all night. And I thought we controlled the front at times and at times they shoved it right back at us. And we were able to hit on some of the plays that we worked on in practice. But it was a back and forth game and we hurt ourselves too much to win at the end.”

Zavier Ellis and Kyle Walljasper had excellent offensive performances for Fondy. Ellis scored three touchdowns on gains of 13, 62 and 1 yards, with Walljasper breaking off an 86-yard touchdown run early in the fourth that gave the Cardinals a 28-21 lead.

Kimberly answered later in the quarter on a 68-yard touchdown run from Frazer that tied the game and eventually sent it into overtime.

The Papermakers (3-0) defense stifled Fondy in overtime, with the Cardinals booting a 22-yard field goal to take a 31-28 lead. Kimberly responded with its possession, converting on a fourth-and-5 before getting the game-winning score from Frazer.

It was a disappointing loss for the Cardinals (2-1), who had several turnovers along with untimely penalties. The offense, however, did look explosive.

“I feel good about that and we have good balance on offense,” Jorgensen said. “But for us the goal is to win. We play the game to win the game and we have fun trying to win the game and we came up short. But for us our kids are going to grow and get better every single week. I am proud of what we did, but we left some stuff out there that we have to clean up.”

Fond du Lac strength and conditioning program prepares for football season

On a foggy Wednesday morning, about 40 high school football players stifled yawns as they entered the Fond du Lac High School gym for a 6:30 a.m. strength and conditioning practice.

New football coach Steven Jorgensen, clad in a black Cardinals shirt with a whistle around his neck, instructed the young men what the plan was for the day. The two-hour session was going to be split into two parts, an outside drills portion and a kettle bell workout. Upperclassmen were to be mixed in with the freshmen. Jorgensen is what he called the beneficiary of a program designed by his father Steve Jorgensen and other Fond du Lac coaches about eight years ago. That is when the Cardinals went to a full-year strength and conditioning program for the football program.

Players meet Monday through Thursday for two hours. Wednesday’s are a program-wide day while the other three days focus on growth in the weight room. “It’s an expectation that you’re here. You’re working with your teammates. The players that are here are going to be rewarded come fall time,” Jorgensen said. The players have bought into the program, Jorgensen said. At the beginning of summer conditioning, the head coach talked with his upperclassmen about accountability and leading by example. At the Wednesday morning practice — just a day before the Fourth of July — juniors and seniors kept the freshmen focused, yelling out both words of encouragement and sometimes corrections for the young players.

The senior class this year is small, roughly 14 players, Jorgensen said. “We need them all, and we need their leadership,” he said. “They’ve done a great job this year of getting out of their comfort zone.” The work ethic was always there with the 2020 senior class, but this season the focus will be on developing vocal leaders.

Jorgensen’s motto is simple — do the ordinary things better than anyone else. Jorgensen said that if you are a relevant football program, you’re working out all summer long. Seeing as how Fond du Lac made it one game away from the state championship, that expectation is there. “Everything we do here is for a bigger purpose,” Jorgensen said. “We’re working with young men that hopefully can take what we’re doing here and carry it out to the rest of their lives.”Jorgensen likes the word potential. His goal is for each player to find and reach their own potential. He believes that football can bring that out in a young man. He also likes the word love. “The kids are learning love. They’re showing it to their teammates. The coaches are showing it to them. It’s all things that carry over into life,” he said. From the football field to the classroom to college and to marriage, the skills learned in humid morning workouts at Fond du Lac High School serve a greater purpose for the Cardinals football team.

Fond du Lac will play its first game of the 2019 season Aug. 23 at home against Franklin.

Steven Jorgensen – New Head Football Coach at FDL HS

Taking over a premier Division 1 high school football program is certainly a challenge for any head coach.

For Steven Jorgensen, that challenge is something he looks forward to tackling as the 26-year-old was named the Cardinals’ head coach Tuesday after his father, Steve, stepped down after spending the 2018 season as the interim head coach. Steven Jorgensen was an assistant on the Cardinals staff the past seven seasons, mostly as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator.

Fond du Lac finished 12-1 last season, winning the Valley Football Association-South title. The Cardinals also finished one step away from Camp Randall Stadium in the playoffs, falling to Kimberly 22-21 in overtime on Nov. 9 in a WIAA Division 1 state semifinal.  “The standard is not changing,” Steven Jorgensen said. “That bar is set high and I come in and understand that we’ve reached a high level and we’re going to want to continue to push for the highest level possible in this program.”

Fond du Lac athletic director David Michalkiewicz said that the school is “excited to have coach Jorgensen on board.” “He’s been a part of our program for the past seven years and he’s helped us build the program that we have today,” Michalkiewicz said. “And I believe he gives us some stability going forward. He’s more of a long-term solution for us going forward.”

He becomes Fond du Lac’s third head coach in as many years. Mike Gnewuch stepped down in January of 2018 and Steve Jorgensen, who had been an assistant on Gnewuch’s staff, stepped in as head coach a few months later in an attempt to help transition the program to a younger head coach, preferably within the Cardinals coaching staff.  “I’m filling the gap here for some good young coaches we have here at Fond du Lac right now –  “I’m the bridge to the younger coaches having greater responsibility in the near future.”

That younger coach turned out to be his son Steven, who knew the opportunity to be head coach could present itself with his father taking over the team on what was essentially an interim basis.  “As a staff we kind of knew that with my father stepping in, that it could be on an interim basis,” Steven said. “We just felt that it would be the best transition at that time. We had a great group of seniors last year that had a really successful senior year and we knew that he was the best for that position at the time and we kind of knew that this was coming and that it would be a one-year thing. “He took one for the team going back to being a head coach. That was never his intention, and we knew as a staff that this was coming and it was something that he had let us know that he would be stepping down. The opportunity came up for me to apply for it and we kind of talked as a staff and they kind of put their faith and trust in me that they wanted me to be the guy to go for it. And I appreciate them and I owe them a lot.”

Steven Jorgensen said the application process went “smoothly” and when Fond du Lac offered him the position, he took time to reflect. “It was something that I had prayed about,” he said. “I’m a man of faith. I talked to my dad and my family and it’s something that I’m excited about and it’s a great opportunity and it’s going to be a great challenge.” Steven said that the entire staff will return to the Cardinals sideline, including his father as well as defensive coordinator Dakota Hermes.  “I’ll make sure I have my father back as well and he’ll be on the staff and he leads up our strength and conditioning,” he said. “I’m biased, but he does one of the best jobs in the state doing that. “Dakota, like myself, is a very young guy and one of the brightest defensive minds that I know. He really took charge of that defense this year and he’s going to be given a lot of responsibility on that side of the ball. He’s got a group of guys to work with.” Steven added that having his father, who won WIAA state titles with Oshkosh North and Kimberly, on his coaching staff is something he will cherish.  “In high school, I butted heads with my dad a lot,” Steven said. “But now we’re pretty much best friends. I mean, I’ve learned a lot from him and coached under him and played under him. He’s my role model going into this.  “This is why I coach because I’ve seen the impact that this sport can have on boys really becoming young men. So I got a great role model that I’ve looked up to. Obviously, I’m my own man and I’m going to do some of my own things and make a few changes that are necessary, but I have a great relationship with my father. It’s something that I cherish and something that is important to me and staff-wise, we’re going to keep the staff intact. There will be some roles that will be changed for the betterment of the program going forward, but it’s a great situation coaching-wise.”
