Thanks in part to a 3-point barrage, the Cardinals hung on to a one-point halftime advantage to hand the Galloping Ghosts their first loss of the season.

The Fond du Lac girls basketball team entered Thursday’s showdown with undefeated Kaukauna on a four-game winning streak, but during that winning streak the Cardinals did not face a team of the Galloping Ghosts’ caliber. So, if the Cardinals could push the streak to five games, it would be quite an accomplishment. Behind good three-point shooting that started on its first shot of the game, Fond du Lac beat the last remaining Division 1 team in the state without a loss, holding off the Ghosts 51-46 in a Fox Valley Association game. “We just had to play our game and shoot well, and that’s what we did,” said junior guard Brooklyn Wood, who scored 13 points. “That’s the beauty of playing in this conference,” coach Jake Jalling said. “You play against excellent teams night in and night out. Super-proud of the girls to never waver and continue to hit big shots down the stretch.”

Fond du Lac (8-5) made 9 of 19 shots (47 percent) from three-point land compared to 4 for 21 (19 percent) for Kaukauna. That included some key threes down the stretch when Fond du Lac turned a 42-39 deficit into a 47-44 lead. “Just talked all week, ‘Be ready to compete,'” Jalling said. “I’ve been saying it all week, I can’t wait to beat these guys, and I was just trying to manifest it a little bit for them.” Wood was all smiles after the game as the Cardinals look to be on track for their first winning season since 2016-17, when they went 12-11. “Last year, we lost a lot and it was hard, so to get a big win like this means a lot to us,” said Wood in reference to the team’s 8-17 record last season. “We’ve been working really hard for it, so it’s exciting.” Jalling is in his second season and knows what the seniors on this team have dealt with. “This senior group, that’s been our mantra; we want them to get some respect,” Jalling said. “They’ve been caught up at the bottom for a while. So looking forward to games like this where we can prove ourselves and we can actually go do it now. Put a little substance to what we’ve been trying to tell everybody. “You have to think this keeps us rolling. I think its four, five straight for us, so I love that. Hopefully we continue to ride the momentum as we move forward.”

Talented roster hopes to return Fond du Lac girls basketball team to FVA respectability

The Fond du Lac high school girls basketball team entered this season with the collective goal of simply becoming a winning program again after finishing last year a disappointing 8-17 overall.

With four games under their belt, the Cardinals have successfully taken the initial steps toward achieving that dream. Fondy opened its new campaign by grinding out a 74-71 overtime victory at home against Sheboygan North on Nov. 22 and followed it up with a 71-41 blowout win on the road over Bay Port on Nov. 26 before taking its first loss Tuesday, 72-61, to Neenah. The Rockets are ranked No. 2 in the state in Division 1.

The Cardinals improved their record to 3-1 with a 78-34 victory over Appleton West on Friday. Brooke Butler scored 17 points, while Brooklyn Wood scored 16 and Sophia Langille had 12.“It certainly was nice to pull that first win out because we felt we didn’t play to the level we’re capable of,” Cardinals coach Jake Jalling. “So, lots to take away and we just need to continue to try and get better each day. It’s not going to get any easier, but we wouldn’t want anything different.”

In the opener, Fondy was led by juniors Wood and Butler with 22 points each. Wood also had six rebounds and seven assists while Butler drained five 3-pointers and grabbed 13 rebounds for a double-double. Langille, a senior, stuffed the stat sheet by adding 14 points, eight assists, five rebounds and seven steals. “Not usually going to see a number like seven (steals) from Soph, but I do feel that her defensive game can go under the radar because of her offensive ability,” Jalling said. “She loves to compete.”

After a close call in their contest against Sheboygan North, the Cardinals made a statement by pummeling Bay Port on its home court. Wood paced that win with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field and five steals. Senior forward Rachel Zimmerman added 12 points and Langille had 10 points and six assists. Fondy had 17 steals as a team. “We’ve been trying to put an emphasis on taking pride on the defensive end,” Jalling said. “Credit to our girls for making reads throughout the game for us. I thought it was a great team win as everyone contributed.”

Despite trailing by 16 in the first half at home against Neenah, the Cardinals cut the deficit to eight by the halftime break and kept it close throughout the second half, coming to within just two points of one of the best teams in Wisconsin. Wood again led the team in scoring with 15 points, followed by Langille with 13 and Zimmerman with 11. “I tell our girls all the time that it doesn’t matter who we go up against, I’m taking our group any night of the week,” Jalling said. “I’m looking forward to the rest of the year with them. They want to bring back some respect to Fond du Lac girls basketball and I think we have the right kids for the job.”

Team captains this year are Langille, Zimmerman and fellow senior Hallie Treptow. Langille and Butler each shared the team lead in scoring average last season with 11 points per game while Wood was the team’s third-leading scorer as a sophomore, averaging 9.9 points. Albeit a small sample size, Wood has comfortably established herself as the leading scorer this season. “We’re looking for Brooklyn to make a nice jump this year,” Jalling said. “She had a nice summer and has had a good start this fall.”

Jalling, now in his second season with the Cardinals, said he’s looking forward to utilizing the depth of a full-strength roster and the ambition his team has in making a playoff run. “Everybody (in the starting lineup) returns so that’s kind of the nice thing,” Jalling said. Jalling said the Cardinals lost three players to knee injuries last season and are hoping to get a few of them back later in the season. He added there are a lot of girls fighting for spots in the rotation, including Morgan Zangl, Amaria Kejo and Lilly Kejo. “It’s exciting talking to the assistants, with me being pretty new yet in year two, who have all said they’re excited because they haven’t seen the depth we have in the program right now,” Jalling said. “It hasn’t been that way for quite a while, from what I understand, so I’m excited too. Goals, definitely, knock on wood here, we would love to stay healthy. With having the injuries that we had last year and just the types of injuries, it would really be great to not see any of those season-enders, for sure. Also, this group has talked about wanting to host a playoff game. I know this senior group would love to get out of the regional round as well. The consensus is we’d love to be playing in March and make sectionals.”

Sophia Langille said the team’s improved health, along with their chemistry and experience, should propel Fond du Lac toward the top of the standings in the Fox Valley Association after tying for the second-worst record in the conference with Appleton West and Appleton North last season. “I’m very excited for this season,” Langille said. “We aren’t young anymore and a lot of our players that were hurt last year are going to be back, so that will help us out a lot. I think it’s just the bonds we have with each other. I’ve been playing with most of these girls since I was in, like, third grade and since middle school. We’re all very close to each other. I’m hoping to have a winning record this year. I think that we’re capable of that. Our team goal is top five in conference and then maybe a regional championship.”

Besides winning more games, Zimmerman said her focus – and a main point driven by coaches – is to have fun and enjoy being with each other. “I’m excited for this group,” Zimmerman said. “We’ve been young in the past, but we have more juniors and seniors coming back this year so we’ll have a stronger team with more experience. I think the relationships that have been built throughout this program have been really strong, even in the last couple of years, and I’m really excited to get back at it with these girls.”

The same can be said for Jalling. “For me, it’s fun because you always expect – at this level, I suppose – them to have the competitiveness and the grind and so it’s always nice from a coaching aspect to not have to necessarily engage with a lot of that. They do a lot of that themselves,” he said. “Just the personalities that I have with this group, overall, they’re such a fun group to be around. I really do look forward to this time (at practice) every day. With teaching and all that, it’s always so nice to know you’re going to have two hours with a great group that I love being around. We get after it, we do it together and they get along. “Even last year with not having, necessarily, the success we wanted, I feel the personalities and the fun never left this group. That was one of the bigger compliments that I heard from parents, that it was fun seeing the girls’ personalities come out. This is actually something that they want to be in the gym, they want to be around each other. They laugh, they enjoy it, they have fun. That, for sure, makes it worth doing for me.”
