Fondy sends 7 to sectionals

BEAVER DAM – Fond du Lac’s wrestling team flexed its muscles in the upper weights at Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 regional tournament.

The Cardinals advanced wrestlers at the four heaviest weight classes, claiming three individual regional titles in the process as Fond du Lac finished fourth overall among the eight teams.

Josh Adams (145), Chase Krug (182), Jason Toshner (195) and Donte Johnson (285) each won titles in their respective decisions, while Gage Zahradnik finished third at 220 pounds to round out the quartet.

Josh Adams pinned all three of his opponents and was barely on the mat for his first two wins before stopping Oshkosh North’s Logan McConnell in 5:43 to capture the title. In the championship match, Josh Adams pin gave him a total of 29 (new school record) for the season.

Toshner registered all of his wins by pin, stopping Saul Calderon of Menasha in 1:07 in the semifinals and Oshkosh North’s Cullen Grunewald in 3:36 in the finals.

Chase Krug survived an overtime in the semifinals and then beat Connor Quick of Menasha 8-4 in the finals, while Johnson outlasted Oshkosh West’s Jacob Heath, 5-2, in double overtime for his title.

Seth Roffers (132) and Tyrik Viebranz (138) each finished fourth to give the Cardinals a total of seven sectional qualifiers.
