Bay Area shuts out Warbirds   2 – 0

The Fond du Lac co-op girls’ hockey team hasn’t had much of a problem scoring the puck during the 2015-16 season.

Averaging over four goals per game, the Warbirds are rarely in a position where they just can’t seem to find the back of the net. Unfortunately for Fond du Lac, Wednesday night was one of those times.

Johanna Cano and Morgan Zirbel scored for Bay Area and Fond du Lac was unable to register a goal as the Ice Bears shut out the Warbirds 2-0 in the first round of the Eastern Shores Conference tournament at Blue Line Family Ice Center.

“We knew it was going to be close coming in,” Fond du Lac coach Duane Woeshnick said. “Tonight we just couldn’t get that first goal. I think if we’d have gotten that first goal, we could have tied it up and even gotten a third goal to win the game.”

Fond du Lac, the No. 2 seed in the conference tourney, will take on the loser of Thursday night’s first-round game between top-seeded University School of Milwaukee and No. 4 seed Fox Cities in Saturday’s third-place game. Bay Area, the No. 3 seed, will face the winner in the championship.

The Warbirds definitely had their chances on Wednesday. Fond du Lac (16-3-2) put 21 shots on goal and had a number of prime opportunities, but couldn’t cash in — something it was able to do in two previous wins against Bay Area (16-6-1) this year.

“We had a lot of good scoring chances,” Woeshnick said. “The rebounds were right there. The goalie made some nice saves when she had to. We just needed that first goal.”

Both of Bay Area’s goals came toward the end of periods, with Cano’s first-period goal occurring at 16:22 and Zirbel’s goal in the second coming at 15:03.

Cano beat Fond du Lac goalie Rebecca Binder after a breakdown in the Warbirds’ defensive zone, while Zirbel scored after her initial shot hit a defenseman and happened to bounce right back to her for the open look.

Binder had 19 saves in net.

Although certainly a disappointing result for Fond du Lac, Woeshnick knows the Warbirds can’t dwell on it. A conference tournament championship may be out of the picture, but Fond du Lac can still take third and needs to focus on finishing the regular season strong with the WIAA playoffs only a couple of weeks away.

“No matter who we play on Saturday, we need to win for sectional seeding purposes going into the playoffs,” Woeshnick said. “Our sectional is basically our conference, so we need to win for seeding.”

Warbirds flying high and for real

Fondy co-op’s success reminiscent of Cowan years

It seems like it was a long time ago but it really wasn’t. Six weeks ago, Wisconsin Prep Hockey posted its annual pre-season Top 10s for both the boys and the girls. As I always say this time of year, the pre-season Top 10s are a ‘crapshoot,’ which is a word that the major online dictionaries give the following meanings: unpredictable, an outcome determined by chance, etc, etc.

Regardless, or irregardless–I can never remember which–the Fond du Lac co-op Warbirds were nowhere to be found on that sainted list. But as the December 2015 page was ripped off the calendar and January 2016 replaced it, guess what? The Warbirds are ranked sixth in the state with a record of 11-1-1, fresh off their solid 4-2 victory over second-ranked Central Wisconsin.

Thus far this year, the ‘Birds have defeated (current rankings in parentheses) Northland Pines (8), Bay Area (3), Eau Claire-Altoona (10), and Central Wisconsin (2). The only blemishes on the sterling Warbirds record are a loss to #7 Fox Cities and a draw with top-ranked University School. All-in-all, pretty impressive for a team that wasn’t on the crystal clear WiPH radar (tongue firmly in cheek).

Head coach Duane Woeshnick grabbed the coaching reins from John Nejedlo in time for the 2012-13 season and the team has averaged 11 wins per year since then. Heck, it is only January 2 and the Warbirds have matched that total already and show no signs of slowing down. This season reminds me of the Fondy/Waupun teams of Mike Cowan, who coached the team for eight years back in the 2000s and earned two state titles (2004, 2006) and three runner-up finishes (2003, 2008, 2009). His teams reached 19 wins on three separate occasions. This team is headed in that direction.

Woeshnick has been in charge for four years and two players that were with him from the beginning are among his leaders. Senior forward Kendalynn Acheson leads the team in scoring (11g-13a) while classmate Miranda Zipp (8g-7a) isn’t far behind. Each class is contributing as well. Junior forward Callie Tighe (14g-5a) is the leading goal scorer on the well-balanced team, which has eight girls with ten points or more. Sophomore Mary Skorupa (4g-12a) is second on the team with a dozen assists, just behind Acheson’s baker’s dozen. Two freshmen are stepping up big time: Maike Zipp (11g-7a) and Morgan Brown (7g-9a) are key members of the top six forwards.

The defensemen play solid defense and pitch in on the scoring end when needed. Juniors Kylee Dyni (4g-10a) and Maddy Ott (0g-1a) are the ‘old-timers’ of the top four, and they are joined by sophomore Lauren Huettl (1g-4a) and freshman Drew Deanovich (3g-7a).

Backing them all up is junior goalie Rebecca Binder, who sports a .929 save percentage and a goals-against-average of 1.45. She has two shutouts while going 8-1-1 in her starts. “We have a great mixture of upperclassmen and newcomers,” noted Woeshnick. “There are many leaders on the team and the chemistry has been great.”

The road to Madison via Sectional 4 is arguably the toughest in the state, with four Top 10 teams vying to play at the Clamshell. Bay Area, University School, and Fox Cities will make the bracket a tough win. That doesn’t deter Woeshnick and the Warbirds, though. “Our goal is to get to state and win a championship,” said the coach. Based on what has happened so far this season with Fondy hockey, don’t be surprised to see them on the ice in Mad Town on March 4.

Fond du Lac Warbirds tested by tough early slate

Fond du Lac Warbirds head coach Duane Woeshnick won’t have to wait long to see how his squad will match up against some of the top teams in the state this season. Just give him a couple of weeks.

Four of the Warbirds first five games are against top-notch opponents – including the WIAA state champions in each of the last two seasons – and Woeshnick said his team will be ready to go starting with Friday’s matchup against Northland Pines, a perennial top-10 ranked team. “Our first five games are going to be very strong. We usually play one of the tougher schedules around the state and hopefully it helps us at the end of the year,” Woeshnick said. “I told the girls that our season really started this summer. By the time Nov. 9 came, it’s too late to be starting then.”

The Warbirds will face Northland Pines in their opening game of the Waupun Tournament, a three-game in two-day event that also includes a showdown with a very good Appleton United squad.

Following the tournament, the co-op program will host defending state champion University School on Dec. 2 and welcome in 2014 state champion Bay Area three days later. “Overall, we are very excited about this season,” Woeshnick said. “We return a lot of players from last year, and we added some talented newcomers.”

The Warbirds will be anchored by a veteran defense and two experienced goalkeepers.

Junior Kylee Dyni was an honorable mention all-Eastern Shores conference selection as a defenseman a year ago, while also scoring six goals on the season. Senior Rachelle Braun and junior Maddy Ott were also regulars on the blue line for the Warbirds last year while Lauren Huettl, Drew Deanovich and Christy Sabel are expected to round out the group.

In goal, junior Rebecca Binder was an honorable mention all-conference selection after finishing the season with .923 save percentage, which ranked third in the conference and ninth in the state. Binder split time with junior Ashley Schmitt. “Both of our goalies are returning, and they spent a lot of time in net last year,” Woeshnick said. “We had a solid defense and goalkeeping last season so we are going to start out the season focused more defensively than we have the past few seasons.”

The Warbirds have to replace two of their top three scorers from last year as they look to pick things up offensively in the 2015-16 season.

Kendalynn Acheson is the top returning scorer for the Warbirds after posting 10 goals and eight assists last year, earning honorable mention all-conference honors.

Callie Tighe, Mary Skorupa and Miranda Zipp each finished with at least seven goals and double-digit points last season and add to the depth of the Warbirds’ roster, which features 11 forwards. “I do think we have the players who can score some goals for us,” Woeshnick said. “Overall we have a great mix of veterans with also potential newcomers who can score some goals. “Hopefully by the end of the year, we are playing our best and scoring some goals.”
