No state track medals for Fond du Lac
LA CROSSE – After dominating the regional and sectional meets, the Fond du Lac track teams didn’t fare quite as well as the WIAA State Track and Field Meet in La Crosse over the weekend.
The Cardinals did not have a state-medal winning performance with just the boys 1,600-meter relay left to be run on Saturday evening. The meet was delayed because of weather and the race occurred after deadline.
The Cardinals’ 1,600-meter relay team was seeded ninth after preliminaries.
Two of the Cardinals’ best finishes came in throws where freshman Andrew Stone took seventh in the shot put on Friday – missing the podium by one spot – while Devan Krzanowski finished 10th in the discus.
Kyle Marcoe did have the fifth fastest time after the preliminaries of the 400 meters, but did not finish the finals race.
The top finisher on the girls side was the 3,200-meter relay team of Ally Gietzel, Madison Hughes, Liz Ziegler and Annie Moore, which placed 12th.

Fond du Lac preparing for state track meet
The Fond du Lac track and field program will be well-represented at the WIAA Division 1 state meet this weekend in La Crosse.
Between the boys and girls teams, the Cardinals are sending 24 events to state, including 16 from the boys squad — the highest total in Division 1.
Whether it’s relays, sprints, long distance or throws, the Fond du Lac boys have it covered. The Cardinals showed that all-around quality last Thursday when they won their fourth straight sectional championship, blowing away the competition in West Bend.
That in mind, Fond du Lac boys coach TJ Severson doesn’t have any grandiose visions about his team competing for a state championship on Friday and Saturday.
He’s simply focused on getting his athletes ready to perform the best they can and isn’t worried about where they place.
“We want everybody to go up there and PR (personal record),” Severson said. “We want their best performance of the year. Whatever happens, happens.”
Severson pointed to a few events he thought could do well this weekend, but admitted his team doesn’t immediately stand out when compared to the competition. However, between the amount of athletes the Cardinals are sending to state and how those qualifiers scratch and claw to perform as best they can, he’s feeling good.
“We don’t have the ‘wow,’ but we’ve got a lot of kids that fight,” he said. “What we wanted at the beginning of the year was to get as many kids to La Crosse as possible and see what happens.”
Another encouraging sign for Fond du Lac is the fact that many of its state qualifiers are underclassmen. With the vast majority of the team returning next year, Severson views this weekend’s state meet as a great learning experience.
“The future is bright,” he said. “The experience (at state) is the biggest thing. We’ve got some kids that are juniors now that were at state last year, so hopefully they just keep getting better.”
Meanwhile, the Fond du Lac girls are sending eight events to state after also winning a sectional title last week.
Like Severson, Fond du Lac girls coach Jena Weigel doesn’t have any specific expectations as to how her athletes will finish, but is hoping they perform the best they have this spring.
“It’s exciting to have so many girls going to state,” Weigel said. “We have quite a few girls who are going for more than one event or are alternates on relays, so the girls we have going are quality girls. I think this year is a stepping stone to the future.”
The Cards have only one state-qualifying senior (Annie Moore), which makes Weigel all the more optimistic about her team in years to come.
“I think (state) is going to be such a great experience for these kids,” Weigel said. “We have such a strong sophomore and freshman class. I think this is only going to help fuel our program. The girls are excited. I think they’re ready to have fun, but it’s definitely going to be that motivating factor from here on out. They’re going to have that expectation that they end their season at state every year.”
