Fondy tennis goes 1-2 in season opener
OCONOMOWOC – The Fond du Lac girls tennis team went 1-2 in its season-opening quadrangular at Oconomowoc on Saturday. The Cardinals defeated Kettle Moraine 4-3, but fell to Oconomowoc 5-2 and Pewaukee 4-3.
Ally Gietzel earned three wins for Fond du Lac, playing at No. 4 and No. 3 singles. Kellie Hierl also picked up two wins in the No. 1 singles slot, while Claire Weston earned two from the No. 2 spot.

Fond du Lac girls tennis youthful in 2016
FOND DU LAC – Joe Sagen didn’t tiptoe around it. The Fond du Lac girls tennis team is going to be young this year. Of the Cardinals’ 11 varsity players on the 2015 squad, only three return this fall.
Gone is the No. 1 doubles team of Annie Hierl and Maddie Bahr, which qualified for the WIAA Division 1 state individual girls tennis meet last October. Gone is No. 1 singles player Melina Zompolas, who transferred to Winnebago Lutheran. Gone are a number of other key contributors.
Sagen, in his second year as the Fondy girls tennis coach, noted that the program has high participation numbers this year but it simply doesn’t have experience.
The three returning players of Lizabee Browy, Toni Winkler and Kellie Hierl will be the core of the team and should all have solid seasons. But after that, it’s a lot of question marks at this point. “The three that I have (returning) are quality girls,” Sagen said. “I’ve got big numbers, I’ve got a lot of freshmen coming in and some are really good freshmen who’ve played a lot of U.S. Tennis Association stuff. I have no idea where we’re going to go from here, just that I’m very fortunate to have some quality people and have some very unknown talent.”
