WIAA Sectional 3-4

#3 Seed West Bend West defeated #6 Seed Fond du Lac 25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24

WIAA Division 1 regional volleyball

Fond du Lac girls volleyball defeated Manitowoc Lincoln, 25-22, 25-15, 25-20, in a WIAA Division 1 regional volleyball match Thursday night. The win sends the sixth-seeded Cardinals into a regional final at West Bend West on Saturday night. West Bend West toppled Sheboygan South in three sets for its win. It’s the first time since 2013 that Fond du Lac has advanced past the first round, despite being the better seed in their opening matches each of the last three years.

The leader of the Cardinals’ offensive attack was junior outside hitter Monica Dreifuerst, who totaled 15 kills and also had a team-high three aces.

Stat leaders:

Monica Dreifuerst 3 aces, 15 kills, 5 digs

Emily Thompson 2 aces, 29 assists

Maggie Stelmacher 7 digs

Ava Tryon 2 aces, 8 kills

Lauren Wendt 3 kills

Megan Wendt 5 kills

Morgan Flaherty 5 kills

The Fond du Lac volleyball team has shown the ability to mount comebacks in sets as well as matches this season. Cardinals head coach Emily Riese wouldn’t mind not seeing her team show off that strength so often. Fond du Lac surrendered the first six points in the third set and trailed by as many as seven points on two occasions, but rallied to complete the sweep of Manitowoc Lincoln, 25-22, 25-15, 25-20, in a WIAA Division 1 regional volleyball match Thursday night.“We were definitely flat (to start the third set),” said Riese, who was celebrating her birthday on Thursday as well. “Luckily, we’re pretty good at comebacks so I didn’t lose faith.”

The Cardinals were the better seed again against the Ships, but this time Fond du Lac was able to collect the win. “I think we just really wanted to win this game,” senior Ava Tryon said. “We haven’t won the first game of playoffs in like four years so our drive to get this game was strong.” Tryon finished with eight kills and led the Cardinal middle hitters who utilized a slide spike – where the middle hitter loops around to the outside to hit – to consistently score against the Ships. “It’s something that we work on a lot in practice,” Tryon said. “When we know the blockers don’t get all the way to the line, we try to force a slide as much as we can.”

The leader of the Cardinals’ offensive attack, though, was junior outside hitter Monica Dreifuerst, who totaled 15 kills and also had a team-high three aces. “Ever since Appleton East she has been on point getting kills, hitting the ball hard and not making too many mistakes,” Riese said. “She’s really picked it up since that match.” It was Dreifuerst who registered Fond du Lac’s first point of the third set after the Ships had bolted to a 6-0 lead and she added another kill through a Manitowoc block a couple points later to trim the deficit back to six.

A pair of kills from Megan Wendt brought Fond du Lac within a 9-5 margin, but the Ships scored four of the next points to stretch the lead back to seven points. That’s when Riese stepped in. “I gave them some time to try to turn it around themselves. I wasn’t calling a timeout and then it got to 13-6,” Riese said. “We just had a talk and I said take a deep breath, focus on getting the next point and let’s go. They did their job and they knew they had to go.”

Morgan Flaherty’s tip earned the Cardinals the first point following the timeout and started a string of four straight points. After a Manitowoc sideout, Fond du Lac answered with five straight points – highlighted by a pair of Tryon aces – to take their first lead of the set at 15-14. The two teams alternated points until Manitowoc tied the set at 20-20, but the Ships wouldn’t score again.

Dreifuerst had a pair of kills around a Flaherty ace and Manitowoc hit it into the net on the final point as the Cardinals sealed the win.“I think our attitude changed (in the third set), too, because we knew we had to go right away,” Dreifuerst said. “(The win) feels really, really good.”

Flaherty and Megan Wendt each chipped in five kills for the Cardinals, while Emily Thompson posted 29 assists and Maggie Stelmacher led the team with seven digs.

Emily Thompson sets up Fond du Lac’s powerful attack

In a sport in which big kills tend to stand out the most, Fond du Lac’s Emily Thompson leaves her mark on the volleyball court setting up those huge hits.

The senior setter is the igniter of Fond du Lac’s powerful attack, lofting balls perfectly skyward around the formation and then watching them turn into points.

She registered the 1,000th assist of her career early this season and has helped Fond du Lac to a 4-1 mark in the Fox Valley Association — just one game behind Neenah and Kimberly — after the team won just three FVA matches a year ago.

Fond du Lac    3     Hortonville   2

Match scores 23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-16, 15-8

The Cardinal girls vollleybal lost the first two sets so Fond du Lac head coach Emily Riese spent a few moments before the third set talking to senior setter Emily Thompson. It was just a little reminder that Thompson is the cog that makes the balanced Cardinal offense hum. “After the first two (sets), we had a conversation with her and just said, ‘You have to be better. You have to make things work with the hitters,’” Riese said. “That’s what she did.”

Fond du Lac came out firing in the third set and never looked back, storming to a 23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-16, 15-8 win over Hortonville in a Fox Valley Association volleyball match on Tuesday night. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 3-0 in league play and matched their conference win total from last season.

And it all started with Thompson. “Something just clicked with our team and Emily was setting better and was mixing it up in the third, fourth and fifth set,” Riese said of the comeback. “I think that’s what got our hitters going.”

Fond du Lac rallied from two sets down to beat Hortonville on Tuesday. Senior setter Emily Thompson finished with 41 assists and went over 1,000 assists for her career.

Not only did the Cardinals finish the match strong, they were dominant in the latter stages of the third and fourth sets to get back into the match. Fond du Lac scored seven of the final eight points in the third set to first extend the match.

Two kills by Ava Tryon, another from Megan Wendt and an ace from Grace Osborn stretched Fond du Lac’s lead to 22-15. Monica Dreifuerst notched a kill to get the Cardinals to set point then before Thompson scored the final point when tipped down an over-pass by the Polar Bears.

In the fourth set, the Cardinals trailed 14-13 but scored 12 of the next 14 points to close out the win and even the match.

Brooke Voight and Maggie Stelmacher each had long service stretches in the latter stages of the set, while Megan Wendt rattled off four of her team-high 14 kills during that span. Tryon added nine kills and Lauren Wendt chipped in eight as once again Fond du Lac showcased its balance on the attack. “It’s awesome to be able to go to whoever and count on them to put the ball away,” said Thompson, who finished with 41 assists, including reaching the 1,000 career assist milestone. “We just had to pick our energy up and start putting balls away.”

Dreifuerst opened the fifth set with a kill, Thompson followed with an ace and Fond du Lac never trailed in the decisive set. Hortonville did trim the gap to 9-7 with back-to-back points but hit the next serve into the net to give Fond du Lac another point and Dreifuerst and Lauren Wendt followed with kills.

Tryon’s ace gave the Cardinals a 13-7 lead and Fond du Lac would close out the win after a Hortonville sideout, with Megan Wendt getting the final point on a spike. Tryon added nine kills and three blocks, while Lauren Wendt added eight kills. Thompson also chipped in three aces, while Maggie Stelmacher registered a team-high 19 digs.

It all added up to another win for the Cardinals – who face powerhouse Neenah on Thursday – and left them feeling pretty good with the 3-0 start. “We knew what we had to do,” Lauren Wendt said. “We’ve played together with each other since we were little kids and it’s just our time.”

FOND DU LAC    3     OSHKOSH NORTH    0

Fond du Lac swept the Spartans 25-16, 28-26, 25-11.

Megan Wendt had 13 kills for Fond du Lac. Monica Driefuerst added seven kills and 12 digs.

Emily Thompson led the Cardinals with five aces and 23 assists, while Maggie Stellmacher had 26 digs.

“Our serves and serve receive was the best we have done so far this season,” Fond du Lac coach Emily Riese said. “Once we picked up the defense, there was no stopping us.”

FDL sweeps Oshkosh West  25-21, 25-16, 25-23

The Fond du Lac Cardinals and Oshkosh West were battling point after point for the exact same thing. The Cardinals were hoping to win the third set and close out the win, while the Wildcats were looking to extend the match and see if there was a comeback in the air around their home court. One team got what it wanted.

Megan Wendt ripped a spike off a dig attempt to break a 23-23 tie, and it was Fond du Lac that closed out the win on the next point to claim a 25-21, 25-16, 25-23 victory in the Fox Valley Association opener for both teams on Thursday night. “I told the girls they had better win this right now because I didn’t want to go four or five,” Fond du Lac coach Emily Riese said. “We have been working on our endurance and things like that and I feel like if it would have gone to a fourth or even a fifth set, it would have been close and we could have lost the match.”

So when Oshkosh West couldn’t set up a play off of Emily Thompson’s serve on the final point, the Cardinals were able to celebrate. “Just getting the (FVA) season off on a high note is a really big thing,” Wendt said. “Getting it over in three and not giving them any hope at all (was key). Just to get it over with so we don’t have to worry about it all.”

But it was a third set that could have certainly gone the Wildcats way, too. Fifteen times the score was tied and the two-point final margin matched the biggest lead for either team during the set. The two teams exchanged points for much of the third set with Fond du Lac surging ahead on one serve and West answering back on the ensuing point. It wasn’t until back-to-back kills from Megan and Lauren Wendt that the Cardinals grabbed a 22-20 lead..

But after West tied the score at 20, Ava Tryon rattled off back-to-back kills and Grace Osborn registered an ace to give Fond du Lac a 23-20 lead. Then, after the Wildcats got a point back, Monica Dreifuerst unleashed a pair of spikes to close out the set.

Fond du Lac carried the momentum into the second set, bursting to a 10-3 lead and never trailing. West narrowed the gap to three points on a couple of occasions, but couldn’t get any closer. One of the reasons Fond du Lac was able to control the second set and earn the sweep overall on the night was the balance it had at the net.

Four different players finished with at least seven kills – Megan Wendt led the way with 11, followed by Tryon with nine, Lauren Wendt with eight and Dreifuerst with seven – which allowed the Cardinals to spread the offense around. “I think (the balance) takes the pressure off a ton because we have so many different players that can play so many different positions,” Tryon said. “It feels absolutely amazing (to get the win.).”

Thompson benefitted from the array of Cardinal hitters totaling 28 assists, while also picking up three aces. Maggie Stellmacher led Fond du Lac with 23 digs, while Osborn added 14.
