Fond du Lac baseball routs Winnebago Lutheran 10 – 0

FOND DU LAC – It wasn’t exactly the prettiest victory for the Fond du Lac baseball team Saturday morning, but the Cardinals continued their roll nonetheless.

Fond du Lac took advantage of six Winnebago Lutheran errors as the Cardinals crushed the Vikings 10-0 in nonconference play at Fond du Lac Youth Baseball Complex, extending their winning streak to four games.

Peyton Head earned the win on the mound for Fond du Lac (14-6), allowing two hits and striking out five in five innings.

“He did a great job out there,” Fond du Lac coach Marty Paulsen said of Head. “He’s still working his way back from a shoulder injury. The bottom line is he just came out and did a nice job for us.”

Scoreless through the first two innings, Fond du Lac broke through for two runs in the third and then exploded for eight in the fourth — ending the game by run rule in the fifth.

The Cardinals managed only five hits on Saturday, but put the ball in play. For Winnebago Lutheran (15-2), that was a problem.

Fond du Lac’s Parker Veness walked to start the third and scored all the way from first base when Eric Morgan bunted and Winnebago Lutheran’s throw to first went into the outfield. Morgan then scored on a Reggie Hernandez sacrifice fly.

Then the wheels began to fall off for the Vikings.

Jason Schneider and Austin Wagner hit consecutive singles to begin the bottom of the fourth for the Cardinals. Following a popout from Head, Winnebago Lutheran made errors on four consecutive plays in the field. By the end of the frame, eight runners had crossed home and Fond du Lac had a 10-0 lead.

“Our guys put it in play,” Paulsen said. “Unfortunately, their guys made a few extra errors that really compounded the score. They’re obviously a better team than the score. But I thought our kids executed.”

Wagner finished with two hits and an RBI to lead Fond du Lac at the plate.

Ryan Jacobs took the loss for Winnebago Lutheran.

Fond du Lac now heads into the final week of the regular season with an outside shot of earning a share of the Fox Valley Association title. More importantly, Paulsen knows his team is playing well as the playoffs draw near.

“We’re going at the right pace right now,” he said. “We’re playing well.”

Fond du Lac Pre-Season

With the vast majority of their batting order and pitching rotation returning, the Cardinals have the talent to compete in the tough Fox Valley Association.

Last season, Fond du Lac finished 11-13 overall but that record was a bit deceiving as the Cards were competitive in almost every game they played.

First team All-FVA pitcher Jason Schneider (4-2, 0.99 ERA) is back, as well as second team All-FVA shortstop Reggie Hernandez (.388 batting average).

Meanwhile, senior pitcher Peyton Head (1-5, 1.56 ERA) also returns and so do seniors Austin Wagner, Ryan Norton and John O’Donnell. Juniors Jack Cole (4-0, 1.99 ERA) and Parker Veness are back, too.

Fond du Lac does lose all-conference second baseman Blake Schmidt.

Longtime coach Marty Paulsen, who was named 2016 Man of the Year by the WBCA, is back for his 49th year leading the Cardinals and believes he has a group that should do well.

“In my 48 previous years, my expectations were usually determined by how many college potential players I had,” Paulsen said. “Entering my 49th year, I see at least six-plus potential college players. We’ll have fun.”
