After devastating wrist injury, Stephen Schreiter is back as one of the state’s top quarterbacks. Stephen Schreiter was at the forefront of the Fond du Lac football team’s biggest win of the season Friday. It’s a position the Cardinals’ senior quarterback wasn’t sure he would be in after missing his junior year with a broken wrist. Schreiter completed 13 of 24 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown against the Papermakers, and also ran for a touchdown in a 31-21 victory at Fruth Field. For the season, Schreiter is second in the state with 1,840 passing yards, third in passing yards per game with 262.9, has completed 66.5% of his passes (117 of 176) and thrown for 14 touchdowns.

Head Coach Sam Plucker is happy to have Schreiter back healthy and leading the offense. “Being a first-year head coach, there’s obviously a lot of unique challenges that arise, and the quarterback position is extremely important,” Plucker said. “So to have someone who is that mature, extremely talented but also emotionally mature as far as the way he interacts with his peers is super, super helpful for me as a coach. “Just being able to trust that, on the field, he’s relaying the same messages that I’m delivering to the team, he’s being extremely supportive of what I’m doing and at the end of the day he can go out there and make the plays too. Having both aspects of the mental game, but then also having the physical ability to throw a really good football consistently, is why I enjoy coaching him.”

Following his sophomore basketball season, the pain Schreiter was dealing with in his wrist for nearly a year wasn’t getting better. He toughed it out and played through the pain up until the beginning of the 2021 sports season. “I didn’t really know what was going on with it, so I played through it,” he said. “Before my junior year started, I finally decided to go get it checked out. I learned my wrist was broken and needed surgery right away. I was expecting about a 12-week recovery initially, but that turned into half a year. It was really mentally challenging on me and my whole family, but I knew I had to stick through it and stay close with my football friends so I could come back for my senior year and make a big impact.”

On Aug. 19 against Kettle Moraine, in his first football game since the 2020 alternate spring season, Schreiter made an impact by completing 16 of 24 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for another score, leading the Cardinals to a 28-20 victory over the Lasers. “I didn’t know how the season was going to go for me, personally, coming back,” Schreiter said. “I didn’t really know what to expect in that first game. The coaches have put me in great position to go make plays. We have a great game plan with great route concepts and plays every week. It’s really on them. I’ve just been trusting them and my linemen. They’ve been giving me great time. I’ve just put the ball where I need to.”

Returning from his injury was a long-awaited moment for Schreiter, who has played football for most of his life. “I’ve been playing football since I can remember,” he said. “Our JFL (Junior Football League) program starts in fifth grade, but my dad’s been a coach there and he allowed me to start in fourth grade. Before that I was playing flag football since about kindergarten through the YMCA. It’s all been an amazing ride for me.”

To perform the way he has week in and week out, after being sidelined for nearly two full years, has earned Schreiter respect from his teammates. Between his play on the field and how he carries himself when he’s not wearing shoulder pads and a helmet, the Cardinals unquestionably have a great leader. “A lot of guys respect him. He puts a lot of work in on and off the field and he leads that way,” Cardinals defensive lineman Isaiah Jones said. “It’s awesome to play with him. He missed last year due to an injury, and then a couple years I didn’t get to play with him being on different youth football teams. But playing with him now is really fun and exciting. I love having him as my quarterback.”

Wideout Ethan Wagner-Lang, who leads the Cardinals with 34 receptions and 547 yards, said Schreiter’s attitude and leadership in and out of the huddle has been a difference-maker. “He’s always lifting guys up and bringing us together as a team. I think he makes everyone better on and off the field,” Wagner-Lang said. “Stephen and I haven’t really played together that much due to injury, so it feels good to be able to catch passes from him and burn defenses this year.”

Schreiter’s performance has started to garner him attention from colleges, but he’s waiting for his first offer. “I didn’t have much film coming into this year because of the injury last year, but I have multiple smaller schools reaching out to me right now,” he said. “I know I’ll have to make a big decision down the road, but I’m just focusing on my season right now.”

The Cardinals are 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the Fox Valley Association heading into Friday’s game at Appleton North. They finish the season at home against Oshkosh West on Oct. 14 and need one win in their final two games to guarantee a playoff spot.

Plucker is happy he has Schreiter leading the Cardinals’ offense into those important final games of the regular season. “I think first and foremost is the commitment to the program,” Plucker said. “Quarterbacks are typically the ones who get the most time from reporters, and they get the most publicity in the community, and most of the time they’re the people who fans know. So having someone who represents the program with humility and respect, and using the same values we have, is extremely important. “I think Steve does all that. He’s extremely hard-working, he puts the program first, he cares about people, he’s super respectful. Being the figurehead or the player who everyone knows, having someone like that is absolutely awesome as a coach.”

The Fond du Lac Cardinals football team pulled off an upset of the previously undefeated Kimberly Papermakers, 31-21, in front of a raucous crowd at Fruth Field on Friday. With the victory, Fondy improves to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the Fox Valley Association.

“It feels awesome. I’m really proud of the kids,” Fondy head coach Sam Plucker said. “We haven’t played to our potential all year and I think you saw tonight what we can do. Coaching the first six games, I didn’t do a great job. So I took a look in the mirror and tried to fix some things. Our coaching staff did a great job this week and our players worked their absolute tail off, harder than they’ve ever worked before, so I’m just so proud of them.” Plucker, a 2015 graduate of Kimberly High School, said the win against his alma mater made for a special moment. “I think Kimberly has been so good for so long, if you beat them you’ve really got to beat them,” he said. “So I’m just proud of the discipline that we had and the full game we played from start to finish and the great job our coaching staff does every week.”

Cardinals running back Brayden Eigenbrodt said the Cardinals put everything into defeating their rivals. “A lot of emotions. I’m so happy,” he said. “We had nothing to lose, so we just left it all out there.”

The Papermakers (6-1 overall, 4-1 FVA), ranked No. 2 in the state by the Associated Press heading into the game, threw the first punch by completing a 44-yard strike from Seth Miron to Ethan Criter, who finished with eight catches for 110 yards. However, the Fondy defense held by stopping Kimberly on fourth-and-3 from the 16-yard line after a gain of only a yard to turn the ball over on downs.

Fond du Lac quarterback Stephen Schreiter – the fifth-leading passer in the state in yardage and fourth in completions entering the night – connected with Tyler Brandner for a 44-yard gain before converting a fourth-and-8 to Ethan Wagner-Lang for 17 yards. Eigenbrodt then ran into the end zone from 2 yards away to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Cardinals attempted an onside kick but the call on the field ruled Fondy interfered with the Papermakers’ ability to catch the football, giving Kimberly great field position at its opponent’s 40-yard line. Fond du Lac’s defense again would not budge, though, as it held their foes to just six yards – half of which was gained on fourth-and-4 – forcing another turnover on downs.

Fondy took over at the 31 and wasted no time getting the ball downfield. Schreiter hit Kalvin Mullins for 51 yards, wrapping up the first quarter of action. To open the second quarter, Schreiter found Tanner Dalske for a 15-yard touchdown – the first of two scores for the junior wideout – putting Fond du Lac up 14-0.

Kimberly struck back with its own big play on a 32-yard run by Blake Barry, who then scored from a yard out to climb back within seven points. Barry had 13 carries for 45 yards.

The Cardinals began their next possession with another Schreiter to Mullins connection, this one for 21 yards. Fondy then converted again on fourth down with a 7-yard reception by junior fullback Max Mengel on fourth-and-3 from the 36. Eigenbrodt picked up 27 yards on the following play, stopped just a yard short of his second touchdown, and Schreiter carried it in from a yard out to finish off a 65-yard scoring drive.

A second attempt at an onside kick was again ruled in favor of the Papermakers for an illegal touching penalty, so Kimberly started at the 40 once more looking to shore up a 21-7 deficit. Its drive took off all but 50 seconds on the clock before the half when suddenly the ball popped out on a carry by Miron and was recovered by junior linebacker Halden Krueger at the 6-yard line, and the half ended with Fondy holding a 14-point advantage.

The third quarter went back and forth in true stalemate fashion with neither team scoring. Connor Schiessl came up with a huge sack for the Papermakers on a third-and-8 deep in enemy territory, but the Cardinals recovered a muffed punt to regain the ball near midfield.

The all-or-nothing philosophy of Plucker paid off twice more when a fourth-and-7 from the 40 drew a pass interference penalty, and then another fourth down conversion was secured with inches to go thanks to a 1-yard keeper by Schreiter. Kimberly stood its ground to prevent a touchdown, but Eigenbrodt kicked a 25-yard field goal to give Fondy its biggest lead opening up the fourth quarter.

Trailing by 17 points, the Papermakers quickly bounced back with a 69-yard touchdown catch and run from Miron to Jaxson Garbisch on a jump ball that a Cardinals defender mistimed, allowing for Garbisch to trot in easily for the score. Garbisch grabbed seven passes for 112 yards, while Miron would finish 22-of-27 for 303 yards and two touchdowns.

Not to be outdone, a few plays later Schreiter handed off to Dalske, who sprinted 56 yards for his second touchdown.

Running out of time, Miron efficiently went 5-for-5 on Kimberly’s subsequent drive, finishing it off with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Tyson.

Fondy maintained possession the rest of the way to earn the surprising win.

“I thought our kids played hard,” said Papermakers head coach Chad Michalkiewicz. “They never quit, and Fond du Lac played a great game so tip of the cap to them. Congratulations to them on a big win.”

Amongst a mob of his teammates and classmates that rushed the field after the two teams shook hands, Schreiter credited everyone he could on a job well done. “It feels amazing, words can’t really describe it right now,” he said. “This week of practice everyone bought in. We started something new. We did new drills, everything, but our coaches knew what they had to do, our players knew what they had to do, and it’s easy to play when you’ve got a line like mine. They showed up tonight and it was amazing.”

Fond du Lac will travel to Appleton North (5-2, 3-2) next week to face the Lightning before returning to Fruth Field for its regular-season finale against Oshkosh West (1-6, 1-4) on homecoming night.

The Fond du Lac Cardinals opened football practice bright and early Tuesday morning for the first time under new head coach Sam Plucker. Plucker was hired as head coach last December to take the reins from Dakota Hermes, who finished the season as the interim head coach after Steven Jorgensen stepped down Sept. 13. The Cardinals finished last season 6-5 overall, with a 4-3 record in the Fox Valley Association – tied for third in the conference with Kaukauna. “I am looking forward to watching all of the hard work that the young men within our program have put in over the offseason coming to Fruth on on Friday nights,” Plucker said. “We have a great group of young men who have committed a significant amount of time to being the best that they can possibly be.”

Three seniors have been named captains for the 2022 campaign – quarterback Stephen Schreiter, wide receiver Ethan Wagner-Lang and linebacker/defensive lineman Isaiah Jones. Also returning is running back Brayden Eigenbrodt, who ran for over 1,100 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior. “I’m really excited for this year,” Eigenbrodt said. “We had a quick out of the playoffs last year, so I’m looking to make it further this year to the state championship.” Fond du Lac was eliminated in the second round of last season’s Division 1 playoffs after a 35-20 defeat on the road to eventual state runner-up Sun Prairie.

Ethan Wagner-Lang, the Cardinals’ leading receiver in 2021, says the team’s experience and camaraderie will lead to success. “A lot of us are returning, a lot of us have chemistry together, so I think we’ll be able to pick it up where we left off and start winning right off the bat,” he said.

Stephen Schreiter also mentioned he is looking forward to the large amount of returning players and how their experience will be a contributing factor to winning games. “We’ve got a lot of guys coming back, a lot of experience,” he said. “I’m just ready to get out there, get some wins with the guys and have fun.”

Coach Plucker’s philosophy is focused on the strength of what will still traditionally be a run-heavy offense aligned with a hard-nosed, disciplined defense. “Our offense starts and ends with the big guys up front,” Plucker said. “Our offensive line, tight ends and fullbacks will set the tone for our entire season. Their selfless attitude, physicality and effort are the backbone of our team. Our defense focuses on everyone doing their job. If everyone is working together, we will have a successful defense.”

Fondy’s leader defensively will be Isaiah Jones, who finished third on the team last season with nine tackles for loss, three of which were sacks, in only seven games played. He said the team has responded positively to the head coaching transition and that under Plucker’s guidance he’s confident the team will be prepared to make a run. “We started off with a new coach and everything’s blending well,” said Jones. “I think we’re really picking up and it’s going to be a great season.”

The Cardinals will begin play Aug. 19 in nonconference action at Fruth Field against the Kettle Moraine Lasers.
