Fond du Lac boys basketball team takes sole possession of first place in the Fox Valley Association with win over Neenah In an intense battle for first place atop the Fox Valley Association standings Friday, the Fond du Lac boys basketball team defeated the defending Division 1 state champions and No. 7-ranked Neenah 67-63. The win for the Cardinals snaps an eight-game losing streak against Neenah, dating to Jan. 19, 2018. “Being from Fond du Lac, it’s a special win,” said Cardinals head coach Nick Ford. “I’m happy to see that we’re continuing to build something — we’ve far from arrived — but we’re building something that the community can get behind and look forward to showing out on a Friday night in January. I’m proud of our guys for building that.” After an 11-0 Rockets run to start the game, Fond du Lac (11-3 overall, 8-1 FVA) stormed back with a 19-6 run of its own to take a two-point advantage, and the Cardinals never gave up the lead. “This game meant a lot to our guys,” Ford said. “We built it up, we tried to make it a big game, and I think when we ran out — there’s never been this many people here before, so there were probably some pregame jitters. Credit to Neenah, too, they’re such a good off-ball team. They move so well off the ball. They were making plays and we weren’t defending so we just had to settle in.” The Rockets (8-5, 6-2 FVA) scored a majority of their points in the first half on back-door passes to the rear-side post, which required a key adjustment from Fond du Lac defensively to take away numerous easy baskets early. “We did a much better job after the half,” Ford said. “You play a certain style offensively and we’re more spacing and then cutting occasionally, while they’re kind of reverse the ball and then they’re diving on pretty much everything — so it’s hard to replicate that in practice for us and I think our guys just had to get a feel for it.”

Fond du Lac fired up eight 3-pointers in the first half, including three from senior guard Colton Blank to enter the break ahead 34-30. Junior forward Ryker Johnson shared the halftime scoring lead with Blank at nine points apiece. Coming out of the intermission, the Cardinals extended their lead to as many as 10 points with a little under 12 minutes to go before the Rockets staged their comeback. Neenah eventually cut the deficit to three points, 59-56, at the four-minute mark and both teams traded baskets until 20.3 seconds were left on the clock. After a heads-up timeout called by senior guard Stephen Schreiter on the following inbound pass attempt, Schreiter managed to get the ball in to Johnson, whom the Rockets fouled immediately. The 6-foot-4 big man sank both of his free throws to give Fond du Lac some breathing room.

The Cardinals’ defense earned a huge stop on the next possession, which called for Neenah to quickly foul again and sophomore forward Eli Braatz delivered the free throw, entering the box score with his lone point of the game. On the other end, Klesmit went for a quick layup but Johnson emphatically blocked his shot out-of-bounds with just 1.4 seconds remaining and the home crowd erupted in celebration. An air-ball on the Rockets’ final shot attempt gave Fond du Lac the victory and temporary bragging rights as top dog in the FVA. Johnson finished with 15 points to lead Fond du Lac in scoring, followed by senior guard Jamariea Dalton with 14 — including 8-of-13 on free throws — and Blank rounded out the Cardinals with 11. In the midst of the excitement from the student section storming the court, Johnson maintained that the focus for Fond du Lac remains on what lies directly ahead. “The season’s not over yet. We’ve still got a long way to go, but this is a big win — a big step in the journey — and I think we’re doing really good right now,” Johnson said. As for how it felt to come through for his team at the free throw line with all the pressure weighing on his shoulders, Johnson added: “It felt amazing. It’s something that you dream of as a kid, and to finally get to do it … it’s fun.” According to Dalton, Fond du Lac’s ability to keep its focus and remain humble has helped it turn a new leaf when it comes to closing out teams in critical moments. “I just want to maintain this. I want to stay humble,” Dalton said. “We have to see that team again, so we’ve got to stay focused and hungry. All year we’ve stayed levelheaded. We know last year we had some moments like this and we folded, so this year we’ve gotten better at keeping our composure. We’re all calm, cool and collected now when it comes to these moments.”

The Cardinals have won eight games in a row and 10 of their last 11 games. Fond du Lac will look to continue its winning streak Tuesday when it travels for a nonconference contest against Wauwatosa West (9-4 overall).

Fond du Lac boys basketball team ready to challenge for top spot in Fox Valley Association

The Fond du Lac boys basketball team is only a quarter of the way through the regular season and has nearly matched last season’s win total. Despite a 53-51 loss at Hortonville on Tuesday, the Cardinals are 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the Fox Valley Association after a difficult 2021-22 season in which they went 4-22 overall and 3-15 in the conference.

Fond du Lac head coach Nick Ford, in his fourth season at the helm, has worked to revive the traditionally competitive program. “We are very individually skilled,” Ford said. “We have to blend that skill together to complement each other and play with great effort defensively. Our goal is to be the best team we can be. We’re not talking wins or losses as much as we’re talking about being the most competitive team we can be. “If we connect and put it all together, we will be very good. The commitment to basketball is what makes this team so special. These guys have bought in to being a ‘Fondy guy’ and what it means to put that jersey on. Every guy on our team was up at 6 a.m. before school since last spring until our dead week this year. All summer. It was very impressive.”

Fond du Lac’s impressive start includes a 58-44 win at home against Kimberly on Dec. 9. The Cardinals’ last victory over Kimberly was Feb. 14, 2017, and they had lost 10 straight against the Papermakers. A trio of seniors propelled Fond du Lac to the win, led by Stephen Schreiter with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range. Backcourt mate Jamariea Dalton had 18 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the free throw line, and Colton Blank added 14 points and six rebounds.

The triumph over Kimberly followed a dominating performance at home against Bay Port in which Fondy led wire-to-wire and won 66-45. Dalton led the Cardinals with 19 points, making 9-of-10 shots from the line. Blank added 13 points and Rocky Barfknecht scored 10. Dalton, a three-year starter who was second-team all-FVA last season, is averaging 19.0 points per game after leading the Cardinals in scoring last season at 15.8 per game. He is ranked 30th amongst the top 50 seniors in the state by WisSports.net. “I just want to get better with my teammates and compete for a conference championship,” Dalton said. “We’ve got four guys that are seniors and have been together since seventh grade, so we have a special bond. My team goals, overall, are to be better defensively and knock off some of the turnovers that we had. Those were our two biggest downfalls last year.”

Schreiter and Blank are averaging 10.0 and 10.8 points per game, respectively, for the Cardinals. “We want to make it as far into the playoffs as we can,” Schreiter said. “We’ve wanted a regional championship ever since Coach Ford has been here. We were so close my sophomore year, so we want to finish the job on that and go even farther this year. Personally, I’m just looking to be a good leader and help my teammates as much as possible.” Added Blank: “Everyone comes in here every day and works their very hardest. Everyone is going to contribute. I think we’re going to have a very successful season because we put all the work in and we’re ready to compete every night.”

Senior Will Braatz, Fond du Lac’s tallest player at 6-foot-5, said the goal is to not just contend for the conference championship but to win it. His individual goal is to lead the team in rebounding. “I’m looking forward to playing with these guys again,” Braatz said. “Coming back with pretty much the same team we had last year, we have a special group. I think we have a good shot at winning conference this year. We never give up. When we’re put in tough situations, we always come back fighting.”
