Bill attended Marquette High School in Milwaukee and graduated from the university of Norte Dame in South Bend, Ind 

with a bachelor’s degree in communication arts in 1962.  On June 18,1962 he joined The Reporter and was named sports editor in 1964.  He was wildly known for his award winning column “Carried Away” which won him first and third places in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association competition. 

 William J. “Bill” Cary – 1940-1987

 Bill Cary’s first sports column was while he was a student at the University of Notre Dame, and was titled, “Cary Calls ‘Em” for the student newspaper, The Scholastic.

 Bill began working for the FDL Commonwealth Reporter in 1962.  He was appointed to the position of Sports Editor in 1964, a position that he held until his death in 1987.

 Bill Cary was a former president of the Associated Press Sports Writers of Wisconsin.  Bill was also a member of its All-State selection committee where here he regularly persuaded the other members to vote for Fondy athletes in many different sports.  Bill passionately supported the high school athletes that were outstanding members of their teams and did everything in his power to get them on the All-State teams.

 Bill Cary was wildly known for his award-winning column, “Carried Away”, which won him first and third places in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association competitionHe used this column to rally support and excitement for athletics in Fond du Lac. 

 Bill has also been inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as a contributor and Fond du Lac Softball as a contributor.

 Bill enjoyed getting to know the many outstanding coaches at Fond du Lac’s Goodrich High School.  Covering the home and away games was a great source of joy for him. Bill loved his job.  He loved written word and he especially loved writing about sports.
