Fond du Lac looks for big things

It won’t be difficult finding the strength of the Fond du Lac boys track and field team this season. The Cardinals are expected to be pretty strong up and down the lineup.

First-year head coach T.J. Severson takes a team that looks to be both talented and deep as Fond du Lac takes aim at charging up the ranks of the Fox Valley Association and beyond. “I think we are going to be very, very competitive. I thing we are going to compete with the top teams (in the FVA),” said Severson, who served as throwing coach the past four seasons at Fond du Lac. “Having depth is the key. You have to have depth in this league to win conference.” Some headliners don’t hurt either and the Cardinals will certainly have their fair share of those.

It starts in the Severson’s past stomping ground where senior thrower Peter Andrew returns after finishing sixth in the state in the shot put. He also nearly qualified for state in the discus. Joining Andrew in the throws will be senior Jason Toshner, a state runner-up in wrestling who will be transitioning to the shot put and discus after being the Cardinals’ top pole vaulter the past three seasons. “I expect him to be right up there with Peter,” Severson said. “I would say the throws will be a strength again.”

But not the only one. Senior Brian Luteyn and junior Justin Maratik were both sectional qualifiers in the hurdles and should be able to score in those events, while junior Quinn Woelfel is expected to be solid in the 200 meters, 400 meters. Both Luteyn and Woelfel will also help out in the relay events.

Add to the mix seniors Kyle Pierce in the jumps and relays and Austin McCrory in the sprints and there is plenty of experienced athletes for the Cardinals to rely on.

Severson also expects Noah Tagliapietra to lead the Cardinals’ distance runners and Zach Emmer to be solid performer in the pole vault.

Fondy seventh at UWSP

STEVENS POINT – The Fond du Lac boys track and field team finished seventh at Saturday’s Point Invitational, hosted at UW-Stevens Point.

The Cardinals finished with 36 points as a team. Appleton North won the invite with 71 points.

Zach Emmer finished second in the pole vault with a vault of 12-feet, 6-inches. Noah Tagliapietra was third in the 800-meter run (2:07.53) and Austin McCrory and Brian Luteyn were fourth in the long jump and 55-meter hurdles, respectively.

Jason Toshner was fifth in the shot put.
