Jim Leonard provides injury update on Braelon Allen, plan for remaining games

The Wisconsin Badgers currently sit at 6-5 overall after they squeaked past the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday afternoon, 15-14. The Badgers were propelled by their two talented tailbacks, Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi, who pounded and pummeled their way to the tune of 190 combined rushing yards. Following the victory, Wisconsin head coach Jim Leonard provided an update on his superstar tailback Braelon Allen and how he plans to manage his workload in the upcoming weeks. Jim Leonard discusses managing his star tailback’s reps – “We have to be smart with him. We know what he’s going through. If he’s banged up it’s probably not getting better until this thing ends off, so trying to be smart. Having Chez back will be a huge help,” Leonard said. “Because he’s a warrior, he wants to play, he wants every touch, he doesn’t want to come off the field. Just proud of him, of what he’s going through, but we have to continue to be smart with how we use him, when we use him. And I think that affects how he finishes runs which, for a big back, his style of play, the way he finishes, the punishing style that he has, we want him to do that, but he’s only got so many hits in that body every week right now.”

Braelon Allen is clearly one of the nation’s very best

Braelon Allen has been working through a left shoulder injury he sustained against the Purdue Boilermakers on Oct. 22. He also exited the Maryland game briefly on two occasions when they played on November 5. Leonard is wise to manage his reps and closely monitor his star tailback’s injury situation. After rushing for over 90 yards on Saturday against Nebraska, the sophomore tailback has officially rushed for over 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. Allen has unquestionably cemented his status as one of the top running back prospects in all of college football..

 Braelon Allen rushed for three touchdowns to help lead Wisconsin to a 66-7 victory against New Mexico State Saturday.

The three-TD performance for Allen matched a career high. The sophomore running back finished with 15 carries for 86 yards and three scores for the Badgers (2-1), who rebounded from a 17-14 loss last week to Washington State.

Allen broke away for a 39-yard rush for a score to give Wisconsin a 7-0 lead just 90 seconds into the game.

Tailback Braelon Allen set the program record for longest run with a 96-yard touchdown with 13 minutes 30 seconds left in the opening half to help UW take a 14-0 lead. Allen broke the mark of 93 yards, set in 2013 by James White against Indiana. Allen, who averaged 6.8 yards per carry and rushed for 1,268 yards as a freshman, finished with 148 yards on 14 carries (10.6-yard average) and two touchdowns.

What does Braelon Allen have in store for year two? 

Braelon Allen blossomed into one of the best running backs in the entire country a year ago, and the now 18-year-old will be participating in his first spring camp. 

After making the jump to college a year early last summer, it took Braelon a few games to get a chance, but from there he displayed why he was a four-star talent out of high school. Playing in 12 games, Braelon tallied 1,268 yards (6.8 ypc) and 12 touchdowns. Already a physically imposing specimen with incredible balance and strength, how Braelon Allen continues to round out his game will be exciting to watch this spring. 

The Badgers worked to get Braelon more involved in the passing game as the season wore on a year ago, but with a full off-season, pass protection is an area of potential growth that could help Wisconsin become more potent.
