Fond du Lac takes second at regionals

OSHKOSH – The Fond du Lac girls golf team got out to a bit of a shaky start Wednesday morning. The Cardinals made up for it with their finish. Led by Shania Schibbelhut’s sixth-place finish, Fond du Lac took second place as a team at a WIAA Division 1 regional meet hosted by Oshkosh North at Westhaven Golf Course, advancing to next Tuesday’s sectional meet. “As they traveled through the first nine (holes), I really wasn’t certain how the day was going to go,” Fond du Lac coach Paula Suemnicht said. “The difference today came when they got into the back nine.”

The Cardinals finished with a team score of 371, behind only regional champion Oshkosh West’s 362. Oshkosh North ended up with a 372 and Sheboygan North/South had a 378, rounding out the sectional-qualifying teams. In taking sixth, Schibbelhut shot 85 — 11 strokes behind medalist Mikayla Smith of Appleton Xavier/Menasha. Hannah Lange carded an 89 for Fond du Lac, a personal best for her, while Monica Develice shot 97. Cassidy Kahl had a 100 and Madeline Krolczyk shot 102. “The front (nine) has a couple water holes and it’s tight, but there are three holes in the back that a creek runs in and through and around and it can create a whole mess of problems,” Suemnicht said. “I thought the girls played those three holes incredibly well.”

The Cardinals advance to next week’s sectional meet at Town & Country Club in Sheboygan, a course they played earlier this season. The top two teams advance to the state meet from there with the top three individuals not on a state-qualifying team also advancing.

“We really are playing well right now,” Suemnicht said. “If you look at our scores over the past weeks between the dual matches and our tournaments, every single week we bring in a team-best score. … We need to keep doing that (to get to state). We need to maintain that focus that we have when we get to practice.”
