Fond du Lac prepares for season with new coach

As the Fond du Lac girls soccer team prepares for the 2015 season, it knows there may be a bit of an adjustment period.

First and foremost, the Cardinals welcome in a new coach in Brandon Petersen, who replaces longtime program leader Greg Winkler. They also need to replace their firepower lost off last year’s 13-7 squad. That all being said, Fondy is feeling hopeful as the season gets underway. With the return of a solid core of seniors that includes Katie Nett, Olivia Larson, Kaitlyn Mack and Abbey Weinke, Petersen is confident his team will be able to overcome the departure of much of the squad’s point-scorers from a season ago. The Cardinals also return sophomore Zoe Pantel, who saw a lot of varsity action as a freshman, and a bring in a bunch of promising first-year varsity players.

“Overall, we’ve seen a lot of promise with the returning seniors but we also have a core group of young players who are hungry and ready to step up to the varsity game,” Petersen said. After finishing fourth in the Fox Valley Association last year, Petersen thinks the 2015 team can make another push for the top half of the league if his Cardinals continue to gel and develop chemistry in the early part of the season. “I think we can make a strong push for that top half, top third of conference,” he said. “We’re hoping to get that first-round playoff game at home, maybe even push a little bit further than that. It will be a year of transition with the change, but the girls have definitely been stepping up to the challenge.”

Nett, who is expected to take on a large role for the Cards this year, agreed with her coach — pointing out that the team has been preparing for the season since last fall and has high expectations. “We’ve been practicing since November almost,” Nett said. “Before school, weightlifting and doing conditioning and stuff so I have high expectations that this year will be good.”
