Kyle’s first college football game. It was good to see him play and I thought he played extremely well. He’s a good athlete and leader at quarterback.”

Rather reserved, expect Walljasper to get a little more vocal as he matures and grows accustomed to UMD. For now, he’ll let his play do the talking.

Walljasper was recruited by coach John Steger, a defensive guru, but no matter. Steger, the dean of UMD football coaches, certainly knows the Bulldogs’ way.

“Coach Steger is an excellent recruiter,” Walljasper said. “He’s the perfect example of the championship mentality we have here at UMD.” Walljasper said the transition to UMD was made easier by the fact his high school had high expectations as well.

At Fond du Lac, while serving as team captain during his junior and senior seasons, Walljasper was a unanimous all-conference selection, conference back of the year and offensive player of the year. Keep in mind he was teammates with Allen, who rushed for nearly 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns as a 17-year-old for the Badgers last fall.

“Braelon’s my boy even if we don’t stay in touch,” Walljasper said, noting the demands on college football players, in particular in the fall. “I hope the best for him.”

Walljasper received solid NCAA Division II interest but the D-I interest was minimal, with the Illinois State Redbirds among those D-I schools to at least put out a feeler.

After redshirting last fall, Walljasper was hoping to play in UMD’s season-opening 31-21 win over Southwest Minnesota State Sept. 1 at Malarky Stadium, but he tweaked his hamstring early in camp and had to miss Game 1.

While Walljasper is a competitor and would like to play every down, only one can play under center each down, and that much is understood.

“If one guy is in, the other guys are out, and you just have to wait your turn,” he said. “If you’re not playing, you’ve got to build up and support whoever is in there. Everyone in our quarterback room is a good quarterback. We compete with each other every day, and that brings out the best in all of us.”
