Oshkosh North slips past Fondy    64  –  56

Before the 2015-16 season started, one of the primary goals for the Fond du Lac boys basketball team was to stay competitive in every game.

In coach Mark Ziebell’s first season at the helm last year, the Cardinals were blown out on numerous occasions and both he and his players knew that needed to change.

So far, Fond du Lac is making good on that goal. The Cardinals have stayed competitive almost every time they’ve taken the court. Problem is, they’re having trouble completing the final and most crucial step — getting wins.

“We have to learn, we have to learn,” Ziebell said. “Sometimes it’s a situation where you have to break through. I thought we had that breakthrough game (in a win) against Hortonville. Then we came out and played Kimberly tough and had a lead late in the game and couldn’t close it out. I know we’re close. … Sometimes that last step is the biggest step and that’s what we’re trying to do.”Trailing by a point midway through the second half, Oshkosh North scored nine straight points to give itself a cushion and made free throws down the stretch as the Spartans held off Fond du Lac 64-56 in Fox Valley Association play Friday night at Fond du Lac.

After a Sam Fredrickson basket gave Fond du Lac (5-9, 3-8 FVA) a 46-45 lead in the second half, Oshkosh North (11-4, 7-4 FVA) responded with a mini-run that put the Spartans up by eight points and the Cardinals could never recover.

Shane Wissink started North’s 9-0 run with a basket and foul before Mitch Sundstrom and Hayden Gabrilska scored consecutive baskets and Tyrese Haliburton made two free throws.

The Cardinals certainly never went away, cutting the Spartans’ lead to four points late in the contest on a Drew Jorgensen 3-pointer and Fredrickson bucket, but they couldn’t complete the rally.

Oshkosh North went an impressive 19-of-21 from the free-throw line, making many of them in the final minutes of the game.

Although Fond du Lac missed only two free throws, going 7-of-9, and committed a respectable 13 turnovers, Ziebell thought a few of those mishaps came at the worst time for his team — playing a large role in Oshkosh North’s game-changing run.

“We had our opportunities, but a couple turnovers and missing the front end of the bonus certainly stand out to me as things that we could have done better to help change the outcome of the game,” Ziebell said.

Fredrickson led the Cardinals with 19 points on the night, while Jorgensen added 17 — making five 3-pointers. Caleb Goldstein had 11 points.

To begin Friday’s game, Fond du Lac was lights-out from long range, making a remarkable eight 3-pointers in the first half. But that changed in the final 18 minutes, when the Cardinals made just one from beyond the arc.

Austin Trochinski led the Spartans with 12 points, while Haliburton added 11. Cole Ellestad had 10 points and Wissink and Sundstrom both had eight.

Oshkosh West holds off Fond du Lac

In a game that was a pretty even match throughout, the Fond du Lac boys basketball team just couldn’t come up with the plays it needed during the final stretch. As a result, the Cardinals are still looking for their first win of the 2015-16 season.

After Fond du Lac took a late lead, Oshkosh West scored seven of the game’s final eight points as the Wildcats held off the Cardinals 54-49 in both teams’ Fox Valley Association opener on Friday night at Fond du Lac. “I thought our kids played really hard, did a great job with the scouting report that we had,” Fond du Lac coach Mark Ziebell said. “I thought defensively we did enough to win the game, could have done a little bit better job rebounding and keeping[out of the paint. … On the offensive end, we didn’t pass and cut and penetrate and got caught standing too much and didn’t play with any kind of flow on that end of the floor and I thought that hurt us.”

Late in Friday’s contest, Fond du Lac’s Sam Fredrickson scored a layup to give the Cardinals a 48-47 advantage. But Oshkosh West’s Jack Gabrielson responded shortly after with a go-ahead 3-pointer and the Wildcats never looked back.

Jake Walgenbach pulled the Cards to within 50-49 on a free throw, but Joe Vils scored a basket to push the lead back to three points and Spencer Henke closed it out with two free throws.

Caleb Goldstein led Fond du Lac (0-2, 0-1 FVA) with 14 points, making two of the team’s three 3-pointers. Fredrickson and Walgenbach both scored 10 points, but as a team the Cardinals struggled shooting the ball for much of the night. “We did not shoot it well,” Ziebell said. “The stats point to that. I think we were 8 percent in the first half from 3-pointers. We didn’t shoot it well, so we didn’t help ourselves in that way. I still thought that we needed to be a little more aggressive on the offensive end.”

Kohl led Oshkosh West (3-0, 1-0 FVA) with 15 points, doing much of his damage driving into the paint. Gabrielson added 12 points, coming up with that big 3-pointer late, and Henke had 11. The Wildcats had five 3-pointers as a team. Neither team got to the free-throw line much as the two squads combined for 22 attempts from the foul stripe.

Although still a loss, Fond du Lac was in the game with a chance to win until the final minute, unlike in its 70-57 season-opening defeat to Menomonee Falls last Tuesday. “One of the things we wanted was to be competitive this year,” Ziebell said. “Wins and losses aside, we just want to be competitive in the game. I think we’ll do that. I think our kids were playing hard and that’s going to be our focus. You can see the result of that today. We were right in the game despite shooting poorly, so we’re on the right track.”

Oshkosh West — Kohl 15, Vils 5, Lancaste 2, Esson 2, Abraham 3, Miller 4, Gabrielson 12, Henke 11. 3-pointers: 5 (Abraham, Gabrielson 2, Vils, Henke). FTs: 7-12. Fouls: 14.

Fond du Lac — Goldstein 14, Jorgensen 5, Fredrickson 10, Walgenbach 10, Gilbertson 2, Spletter 2, Paulson 6. 3-pointers: 3 (Goldstein 2, Jorgensen). FTs: 6-10. Fouls: 17.

Menomonee Falls tops Fondy

Menomonee Falls 70, Fond du Lac 57: Caleb Goldstein scored 22 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Cardinals fell to the Indians in a nonconference game.

Leading 39-30 at halftime, Fond du Lac was unable to stop Menomonee Falls in the final 18 minutes, allowing 40 points.

Drew Jorgensen added 13 points for the Cardinals, while Sam Fredrickson had eight points.

Fond du Lac hoping to take next step

In Mark Ziebell’s first year as the Fond du Lac boys basketball coach, it took the Cardinals about half the season to finally begin playing the way they were capable. Although Fond du Lac finished just 6-17 overall, which included a three-way tie for seventh place in the Fox Valley Association, the Cardinals won three of their final four conference games and started to look like a different team than the one that began the season.

In the second year of Ziebell’s tenure, he’s hoping for more consistent play from the very start. He doesn’t have any far-fetched expectations. He simply wants his team to be competitive in every game, and the wins and losses will take care of themselves. “Heading into this year, I think the main thing I want to focus on is being competitive,” Ziebell said. “Let’s be competitive in every game. Despite some of the success we had in terms of wins and losses at the end of the year last year, some of the games we lost, we weren’t competitive at all. Those were 20-25 point blowouts. Those teams were very good, but we want to be competitive with all those teams.”

Although Fond du Lac did lose Brian Luteyn (10.3 points per game, 4.9 rebounds per game) as well as Marcus Ruch (7.4 ppg) from last year’s squad, it returns the vast majority of the talent it had in 2014-15.

Caleb Goldstein (8.3 ppg), Sam Fredrickson (6.6), Jake Walgenbach (5.8), Drew Jorgensen (4.2), Peyton Head (2.9) and Coy Paulson (1.4) all will have larger roles during the 2015-16 season and will need to adjust to the spotlight quickly.

Ziebell believes his team has players capable of shooting the ball well this season and is looking to spread the opposition out on defense so they can get some open shots. “We’ll do a kind of space-and-pace type of thing. We’ll spread you out,” he said. “We’ll try to get to the basket, penetrate and kick. Certainly we’ll have someone like Sam Fredrickson inside or a Devon Krzanowski, who’s just a hard worker. We will have some post presence, too, so we’re not just going to be bombing 3-pointers. We want to get it inside and have a good inside-outside mix. Sometimes that inside [play] doesn’t just have to come off post touches. It’s dribble-penetration, getting in the paint and playing off two feet.”

With all that in mind, Ziebell noted that he doesn’t think the Cardinals will have many problems scoring points in 2015-16. What he is concerned with is the other end of the court. Defensively, Fond du Lac could struggle a bit and for any team to be successful in the rugged FVA, a solid defense is a must. “I don’t think offense is going to be an issue for us. I think it’s going to be on the defensive end,” Ziebell said. “Can we stop people? Are we going to stop people on a consistent basis? That’s going to be the big focus for us. I know we’ll score. I believe we’re going to score. Can we stop them on the other end?”

Ziebell is looking to use primarily a man-to-man defense this season, which means everyone on the court will need to be stout on that end. A man defense is only as strong as its weakest link, but in the FVA, it might just be a necessity. “I think we’re going to start out with some man-to-man and slowly go from there,” he said. “In the FVA, if you want to be really good, you’ve got to play good man-to-man defense. I think that’s really what it comes down to. … In the FVA, that’s what those top teams all have in common. They all have shooters, but they can all really defend.”

As far as the conference race, Ziebell believes the FVA could be an even stronger league than what it was last year. While he pointed out that the top of the conference might not be as good as it was a season ago, the middle- and bottom-tier teams will be improved, which should lead to a more competitive race and better overall league, with the favorites likely being Kaukauna, Oshkosh North, Appleton West, Hortonville and Kimberly. “I think top to bottom, it’s going to be better this year than it was last year,” Ziebell said. “Last year, you kind of had four teams that separated themselves from everybody else. The bottom got better and at the top, maybe not quite as strong although certainly very good.”

While unsure as to where his Cardinals might fall in the FVA mix, Ziebell is happy with the group of kids he has and is looking forward to tipping off his second season at Fond du Lac. “I think we’ve got a group of coachable kids that want to please and want to play the game the right way and are trying to do the things that we ask,” he said. “As a coach, that’s great because you can look in a mirror, and if things aren’t where they need to be, [say] ‘I’ve got to make some changes because I’ve got guys that want to get better.’ I’ve got guys that want to be coached. … I think we’ve got guys that want to learn, want to play together, and I think they want to turn this program around.”
