Fondy falls in Badgerland championship  4  –  3

With a conference title on the line, the Fond du Lac boys hockey team gave possibly the hottest squad in the state a battle to the very end. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, an early deficit was too much to overcome.

Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha grabbed a 2-0 lead before holding off a furious Fond du Lac rally in the third period as the Rockets edged the Cardinals 4-3 in the Badgerland Conference tournament championship game Saturday night at Blue Line Family Ice Center.

“Our guys showed great resiliency,” Fond du Lac coach Ryan Sarazin said. “That’s the first time I’ve seen some really good fire in them between the second and third periods. I didn’t really dictate anything, they did it themselves. I felt the ice was tilted against us in the second and all of sudden we turned it around in the third.”

Facing a two-goal deficit heading into the third period, Fond du Lac (11-11-1), the No. 4 seed in the tournament, needed a serious comeback. Against Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha (22-1-1), the No. 2 seed and a team that hadn’t lost since the first game of the season, that seemed improbable.

Yet the Cardinals gave the Rockets all they could handle.

Caylen Dyni pulled Fond du Lac to within a goal when he scored just 1:20 into the third on assists from Ryan Sabel and Henry Lange.

The Rockets responded with a Tyler Hafeman goal only minutes later, but Dyni struck again at the 5:32 mark. Noah Wilson and Ben Pertl assisted on Dyni’s second goal.

Then Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha showed why many view the Rockets as a favorite to advance to the WIAA state tournament. Clutching a 3-2 lead with momentum firmly in Fond du Lac’s corner, Alec Elkin scored what would ultimately be the game-winner for the Rockets at the 10:35 mark — giving him a hat trick and boosting the lead to two goals with only minutes remaining.

Lange gave Fond du Lac life with a goal at 15:58, assisted by Dyni and Wilson, but the Cardinals couldn’t muster another good opportunity in the final minute. The comeback for a conference championship came up just short.

“They’re a good team,” Sarazin said of Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha. “They just kept inching one step ahead. 2-0, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2. It was just that kind of deal. I’m proud of the kids’ effort this weekend and I think we can build off it.”

William Shober had 27 saves in goal for Fond du Lac, while Preston Long had 19 for the Rockets.

Although Sarazin isn’t somebody who normally values moral victories, the Cardinals pushed the heavily-favored Rockets to the brink. That, combined with Fond du Lac’s last-second upset win over top-seeded Appleton on Friday night in the conference tournament semifinals, has him confident in his squad heading into the WIAA playoffs.

“I’m never one for moral victories, but I judge stuff on a barometer,” he said. “That team’s either going to be close, if not competing in Madison (at state). We looked at this like a sectional final game and how we’d measure up. They’re a good hockey team and they’re extremely hot right now. We can take that with us. I thought we moved the puck well in the third period and gained some confidence that way.”

Fondy hockey shocks Appleton  2  –  1

With just three seconds remaining, Caylen Dyni scored the game-winning goal for the Fond du Lac boys hockey team in a 2-1 win over top-seeded Appleton in a Badgerland Conference tournament game on Friday night at Blue Line Family Ice Center.

The Cardinals advance to the tournament championship on Saturday night.

Coach Ryan Sarazin spoke highly of his team’s tenacity against the No. 1 team in the state.

“I’m just glad our guys battled hard,” he said. “We played really well in the third period and we just didn’t give it up. Just a really good response for our guys.”

Ryan Sabel scored Fondy’s first goal, along with assisting Dyni on his game-winner. Joseph Voight assisted on Sabel’s goal.

William Shober was a strong defensive force for the Cardinals with 28 saves.

Fond du Lac shuts out St. Mary’s Springs

In last year’s first-ever battle for the Sturgeon Cup, the Fond du Lac boys hockey team fell flat. Losing to intracity rival St. Mary’s Springs co-op 4-1, the Cardinals saw an opportunity to grab the rivalry’s newly-created commemorative trophy slip through their fingers. This year, they made sure that didn’t happen for a second season in a row.

Three different players scored for Fond du Lac as the Cardinals shut out St. Mary’s Springs co-op 3-0 in a Badgerland Conference game Friday night at Blue Line Family Ice Center — securing the Sturgeon Cup for the first time and sending their archrivals to another tough loss. “It’s a great feeling, a good team win,” Fond du Lac forward Joseph Voight said. “We got the shutout and everything. The team chemistry is just unreal this year.”

After a scoreless first period, Fond du Lac (3-3, 1-1 Badgerland) finally broke through a little under two minutes into the second. On an assist from Ryan Sabel, Caylen Dyni sniped a wrist shot past St. Mary’s Springs goaltender Colin Ahern and the Cardinals had the lead. It only took a few minutes after that before Kolton Sabel managed to score in a scrum in front of the net to push Fond du Lac’s lead to 2-0.

Voight and Henry Lange assisted on Sabel’s goal and the Cardinals never looked back. Voight added the third and final goal at the 10:43 mark of the third period, doing it while the Cardinals were shorthanded. “I thought (Springs) had good energy and they matched us (in the first period),” Fond du Lac coach Ryan Sarazin said. “I didn’t think we got inside and penetrated and had good enough shots. Our goal was to get to the net more in the second period and I thought that was the difference. I thought we started to turn the tide a little bit and at least get into the hard areas and it paid off for us a couple times in the second. It was a grind-out win.”

William Shober had 14 saves in picking up the shutout in net for the Cardinals. Although the Ledgers didn’t have a ton of great opportunities to score on Friday, Shober denied them on the few occasions they did. “He looked sharp,” Sarazin said of Shober. “They had a couple chances on breakaways on power plays. They had a couple opportunities and he stood tall.”

For St. Mary’s Springs (0-4, 0-2 Badgerland), it was another frustrating loss in what’s been a frustrating season to this point. Ahern played pretty well in goal, saving 28 of 31 shots, but the Ledgers couldn’t get much going on the offensive end of the ice. “The guys played hard, but we just didn’t generate any offense,” St. Mary’s Springs coach Tim Ahern said. “We’re struggling to produce offense. It’s the same thing we’ve had the first three games and here in the fourth.”

While the Ledgers will continue to look for answers, Fond du Lac is feeling confident following its second straight win and hopes to use that momentum moving forward. “We want to improve as the season goes on,” Voight said. “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish so that’s what we’re looking for.”

Fond du Lac enters season with high expectations

There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it — the Fond du Lac boys hockey team has some pretty lofty expectations for itself in 2015-16. The Cardinals return most of their starting lineup from last year’s 11-14-1 squad and feature nine seniors on the team, including last season’s second-leading scorer Caylen Dyni.

Even though the Badgerland Conference is once again expected to be among the stronger leagues in the state, coach Ryan Sarazin is expecting a lot from his team. “We have high expectations in a tough setting,” Sarazin said. “There’s no doubt it’s a tough setting. … Our immediate goals are always to start with short-term goals, in five-game segments. We’ll start with a goal of doing well in the Badgerland Conference. We don’t look to far out, but we always want to go to state. We’ll look at finishing high in the conference, focus toward the (conference) tournament at the end of the year and build a strong team going into the postseason tournament.”

One significant loss Fond du Lac does suffer is that of Jack Nejedlo, who scored 53 points for the Cardinals last season and was their unquestioned leader on the ice. Even though Sarazin is confident in the group of players he has returning, he knows there may be a bit of an adjustment period without one of the better players in the state last year. “It will take some time,” Sarazin said. “It might not be one guy getting 70 points, it might be a few guys spreading it out and our depth. The experience we have with the guys coming back up front, hopefully we can relieve some of the pressure off them. It doesn’t have to be one guy, it can be multiple guys.”

The offensive leader for Fond du Lac will be Dyni, who scored 43 points last year and could emerge as one of the area’s more prolific scorers in 2015-16. Meanwhile, senior goalie William Shober (3.25 goals-against average) returns after starting 25 games a season ago. The Cardinals were fourth in the Badgerland Conference and advanced to the WIAA sectional semifinals in 2014-15.

On defense, Ben Pertl and Noah Wilson will lead the charge, assisted by players like Thomas O’Leary, Zach Schmit, Adam Grim and Hunter Garrison.

Sarazin anticipates Dyni taking on an even larger offensive role this season, though Joseph Voight, Chase Auchue, Sam Todd, Dayne Hefter, Ryan Sabel and Henry Lange will also contribute. “With the experience of 16 returning letterwinners, we should be improved coming into the season,” Sarazin said. “It all depends on the buy-in of our players and their drive as a group to come in each day and improve. If they do, we could have an excellent season.”
