Four wrestlers reach semis at On The Water Classic
OSHKOSH – Fond du Lac and Laconia each advanced two wrestlers into the semifinals on the first day of the On The Water Classic at UW-Oshkosh’s Kolf Sports Center on Tuesday. The tournament concludes Wednesday with the championship matches slated to start about 3:30 p.m.
Josh Adams and Donte Johnson of Fond du Lac and Laconia’a Zachary Foth and Zach Coffeen are each still in the hunt for titles after posting quarterfinal wins late Tuesday night.
Josh Adams backed up his top seed at 145 pounds by easily dispatching his first two opponents after receiving a first-round bye. He beat Stevens Point’s Logan Reed by a 17-1 technical fall in his first match while pinning Menasha’s Nic Moran in 1:58 in his second match. He then advanced to the semifinals with a 16-7 major decision win over Princeton’s Ivan Hebbe. Adams will face a fellow undefeated wrestlers in Waterford’s Austin Thomas in the semifinals.
Donte Johnson received a first-round bye before pinning Germantown’s Dominique Bennett in 2:47 and Stevens Point’s Jacob Erdman in 40 seconds in the heavyweight bracket. He then edged Pacelli’s Cole Warzynski, 3-2, to reach the semifinals. Johnson will face undefeated Brady Koller of Sheboygan Falls in the semifinals.
Still alive in the consolation bracket is Fond du Lac’s Colton Wasieleski (195).
Fond du Lac no match for Neenah
With a few kids out of town, a few more injured and a bunch with little experience, the Fond du Lac wrestling team faced a tall order Tuesday night against Neenah. The Cardinals fought hard and picked up their fair share of wins, but in the end were no match for the Rockets. Neenah recorded five pins and benefited from two Fond du Lac forfeits as the Rockets defeated the Cardinals 47-29 in a Fox Valley Association match Tuesday at Fond du Lac.
“We just have young kids,” Fond du Lac coach Joe Rens said. “We’re asking a lot of young kids. We’ll be alright when we get a year or two of experience, but we’re asking young kids to do a lot. They’re doing great, it’s just that they’re wrestling sophomores, juniors and seniors. As a freshman, you can’t compete with that. We also had a couple guys go on vacation. What do you do?”
With forfeits at 106 and 120 pounds, the Cardinals put themselves in a 12-point hole right off the bat and were never able to make up for it. The first match of the night, at 113 pounds, saw Neenah’s Briar Haas pin Fond du Lac’s Sam Schmidt in 1:09 and that was a sign of things to come. Following a Fond du Lac forfeit at 120, the Cardinals’ Logan Naker earned an 8-4 decision over Neenah’s Hunter Carey at 126 pounds, but the Rockets responded with two straight pins from Isaac Bethel (132) and Montana Jones (138).
However, the Cardinals weren’t done.
Beginning with an 11-6 decision win at 145 pounds for Fond du Lac’s Collin Athanisiou over Neenah’s David Oyler, the Cardinals made a bit of a run to get back into the dual.
At 152 pounds, Fondy’s Seth Roffers then earned a 21-5 technical fall victory over Francis Turoski and Josh Adams followed that with a pin of Delantae Mills at 160 pounds in 5:19. But Neenah’s Beau Yineman (170) earned a tech fall victory and Forrest Yineman (182) and Logan Lehrer (195) pinned their opponents.
Fond du Lac’s Colton Wasieleski (220) and Donte Johnson (285) closed the meet with pins to provide for the final deficit.
Adams and Johnson, two state qualifiers from last year, continued their roll to start the 2015-16 campaign, both earning another pin on Tuesday. But they also know they still have work to do as the season nears its midway point. “They know they’ve still got some work to do,” Rens said of Adams and Johnson. “They’ve got to refine their skills and keep rolling and stay healthy down the stretch here. It’s starting to get into the grind of the year and they’ve got to stay healthy.”
Another impressive performance for Fond du Lac on Tuesday came from sophomore Colton Wasieleski, who was filling in for the injured Gage Zahradnik at 220 pounds. With a pin of Neenah’s Brexton Bostwick in 5:30, Wasieleski proved he can make an impact even at a higher weight class than normal, as he’ll likely move back to 195 pounds when Zahradnik returns.
“He’s a nice sophomore,” Rens said of Wasieleski. “He’ll go down to 195 when Gage returns. Then we’ll have a nice battle at 195 and 182.”
The Cardinals return to action next week for the On The Water Classic in Oshkosh.

Fond du Lac’s Josh Adams captured the 145-pound title to highlight the day for the area wrestlers.

Donte Johnson finished third at heavyweight and Colin Athanasiou took sixth at 152 pounds for the Cardinals.
Hudson won the team-title in the 23-team tournament, with Sauk Prairie taking second and Sheboygan Falls finishing third. Fond du Lac finished 15th.

Oshkosh North edges Fond du Lac
Josh Adams added his name to the Fond du Lac wrestling record book, but it wasn’t enough for the Cardinals on Thursday.
Oshkosh North proved to be a bit deeper as the Spartans edged the Cardinals 39-35 in a Fox Valley Association dual meet hosted by Fond du Lac.
“In some areas, I thought we wrestled very well, but we’ve got talked about it all the time where in some cases you just can’t get pinned,” Fond du Lac wrestling coach Joe Rens said. “You’ve got to keep it a decision or keep it a major, which affects the team points. I thought in a few cases, we let up a little bit. We didn’t think of the team so much and we got pinned.
Oshkosh North had four pins on Thursday, with Rey Brewer (120 pounds), Kyle Schwartz (138), Logan McConnell (170) and Zach Ben-Ismail (182) accounting for them.
The highlight of the night for the Cardinals came at 160 pounds, where Adams recorded his 75th career pin, breaking the school record for pins in a career. Adams pinned Chad Michel in 3:04 to secure his place among the best wrestlers in Fond du Lac history.
“We were all excited. We knew where he was at, but he also has bigger goals than just the pin record,” Rens said of Adams. “He wants to be a state champ and he can do that. This is just part of the thing that comes along with it. He knows records are meant to be broken, but he wants to be a state champ and go on to wrestle in college. It’s always fun to watch Josh wrestle.”
