Germantown   63     Fond du Lac   38

The 15th-seeded Cardinals were no match for defending Division 1 state runner-up and No. 2 seed Germantown in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal.

Germantown took a 31-17 lead at halftime and never allowed Fond du Lac to rally. Juwan McCloud led the Warhawks with 21 points.

Jake Walgenbach paced Fond du Lac with 13 points in his final high school game and Sam Fredrickson chipped in with nine points. Caleb Goldstein added eight points.

Fondy pulls away from Preble

Down at halftime with its season on the line, the Fond du Lac boys basketball team answered the call.

For a squad that’s sometimes had trouble closing out games during the 2015-16 season, it was a refreshing way to start the WIAA playoffs.

Caleb Goldstein scored a game-high 23 points and Sam Fredrickson added 17 as No. 15 seed Fond du Lac pulled away from No. 18 seed Green Bay Preble 59-46 in a WIAA Division 1 regional quarterfinal Tuesday night at Fond du Lac.

The Cardinals advance to face No. 2 seed Germantown on Friday night in a regional semifinal.

On Tuesday, Fond du Lac (9-14) trailed 27-22 at the break against a Hornets squad that was playing pesky defense and knocking down 3-pointers.

It took only a few minutes into the second half before the Cardinals began to impose their will on Green Bay Preble (4-19), jumping ahead 32-31 on a Goldstein long ball. Fond du Lac never trailed after that.

“I thought their matchup zone gave us a few problems, I thought we were a little bit unorganized at times there in the first half,” Fond du Lac coach Mark Ziebell said. “At halftime, we got reorganized and made sure we were all on the same page. … We came back in the second half and we were reorganized.”

The Cards eventually pulled ahead 41-33 before Preble’s Connor Lemmens hit two straight 3-pointers to put the Hornets within a bucket. But Fond du Lac responded.

Fredrickson had consecutive baskets, Jack Cole and Goldstein added buckets and the Cardinals were right back in control. “We started playing harder (in the second half),” Fredrickson said. “We played a little slow in the first half and once we got it going, we kept going and didn’t stop.”

Fond du Lac hit its free throws down the stretch, going 9-of-14 for the game, as it kept at least a nine-point lead the rest of the way.

The high-low duo of Goldstein and Fredrickson was a tough combination for Preble to stop Tuesday as the two players combined for 40 of Fond du Lac’s 59 points.

Goldstein hit four 3-pointers and Fredrickson was a beast near the basket.

“Today, Sam was one-on-one and he’s pretty good one-on-one,” Ziebell said. “From November to where he is now with his post game, I think he’s really, really improved. I think he showed that growth today in his post game. … Caleb has just been shooting unbelievably well. He shot 42 percent in conference play from 3-point range. He’s really been dialed in for a long time and when he’s dialed in and Sam’s going on the inside, that’s a pretty good combination.”

Lemmens had 19 points to lead Green Bay Preble, while Connor Curtis had 14. Drew Jorgensen and Jake Walgenbach both added five points for Fond du Lac.

In advancing to face Germantown on Friday, the Cardinals are preparing to take on one of the state’s prep boys basketball juggernauts. Germantown won three state championships in a row from 2012-14 and was the runner-up last season.

For Ziebell and his players, there won’t be any magic blueprint to scoring a monumental upset. The Cardinals will look to play their style as best as they can.

“We just have to have some great practices and go out and play as hard as we can,” Goldstein said.

Added Ziebell: “We need to play well on both ends of the floor. We’ll start there and we’ve got two days to get ready.”
