Warbirds shut out Appleton 4 – 0
The last week of the regular season was not kind to the Fond du Lac co-op girls hockey team.
The Warbirds fell in blowout fashion to Hudson and also lost two players to injury, including a season-ending injury for defenseman Kylee Dyni.
Coach Duane Woeshnick admitted his team’s morale was at a low point. The Warbirds needed a boost.
They got it Friday night.
Mary Skorupa scored two goals and Rebecca Binder posted a shutout in net as No. 2 seed Fond du Lac co-op opened the postseason by defeating No. 7 seed Appleton 4-0 in a WIAA regional final at Blue Line Family Ice Center.
“It’s a huge win for us,” Woeshnick said. “Last week was rough for us.”
The Warbirds advance to sectional semifinals next Tuesday where they will face No. 3 seed Bay Area, a team they’ve played three times already this season — winning twice and losing once. Bay Area defeated Arrowhead 5-0 on Friday.
On Friday, Fond du Lac co-op (19-4-2) took the leada few minutes into the game and never looked back.
Skorupa scored her first goal unassisted at the 7:13 mark of the first period to give the Warbirds a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
In the second period, Fond du Lac scored three goals to gain firm control of the contest.
First, Callie Tighe whipped a wrist-shot rocket past Appleton goalie Kenzy Hoisington on a breakaway at 5:09. Then Skorupa scored her second goal on an assist from Kendalynn Acheson at 12:57 before Miranda Zipp capped off the period with a goal at 16:27, assisted by sister Maike.
“I thought we did well,” Miranda Zipp said. “We were able to spread out and worked as a team.”
The Warbirds outshot Appleton (9-17) 33-20 on Friday. Binder posted her first career playoff win in goal, recording the shutout.
“I was nervous coming into tonight’s game. I usually am, but my biggest thing is my coaches and my mom tell me to be big (in goal),” Binder said. “I like to be aggressive and that’s just all we can do.”
In advancing to the sectional round of the playoffs, the Warbirds are feeling confident that they can extend what’s been a spectacular season to this point.
“We’re very confident,” Woeshnick said. “I’ve seen very positive attitudes from the girls. It seems like a very positive energy from the team. … We’ve just got to play our game, regardless of who we play next week.”
