Fond du Lac falls to Appleton West

Appleton West scored twice within a span of a minute early in the second half to break a tie game and collect a 3-1 win over Fond du Lac in Fox Valley Association soccer action on Tuesday.

The game was scoreless for more than 30 minutes until the Terrors notched the game’s first goal.

Matt Schneider answered with a goal for Fond du Lac to tie the game and the scored stayed even until halftime.

The Terrors, though, scored twice in the first six minutes of the second half and then took advantage of Fond du Lac playing a player down after a red card for the final 15 minutes to hold on for the win.

Fond du Lac demolishes Appleton East

It’s been a frustrating first half of the season for the Fond du Lac boys soccer team. The Cardinals have played in numerous close games throughout the year, but wins have been hard to come by.

On Tuesday, Fond du Lac unleashed a little bit of that frustration. Matt Schneider and Riley Odekirk scored two goals apiece as the Cardinals earned their first Fox Valley Association victory of 2015 with a 6-1 demolition of Appleton East at Fond du Lac Soccer Complex. “It feels really good. It feels really good to get one of this caliber, too,” Fond du Lac coach Alex O’Connor said of the win. “One where we get a commanding lead and we keep it. It’s good for these guys’ confidence. We’re a strong team and we haven’t had the results. It’s good to see these guys can come out and get fired up and produce some good results.”

It didn’t take long for Fond du Lac (2-7-3, 1-3-1 FVA) to grab an early edge on the Patriots. Senior midfielder Matt Schneider gave the Cardinals a lead they would never relinquish midway through the first half, firing a left-footed rifle past the Appleton East goalkeeper for the game’s first goal. A few minutes later, after a Patriots penalty in the box, Fond du Lac’s Leonardo Almaraz scored on a penalty kick and the Cardinals were up 2-0 just like that. Schneider would add his second goal at 31:18, doing so on a wonderful individual effort in which he battled two Patriots defenders to get a shot off — which just went past the reach of Appleton East’s goalkeeper. Odekirk scored his first goal only four minutes after Schneider’s second. The Patriots scored late in the first half, but Fond du Lac still held a 4-1 lead after 45 minutes.

In the second half, Odekirk added his second goal 15 minutes in, before Luis Diaz capped off the evening with a goal at 87:00 for a 6-1 final score. Schneider credited Fond du Lac’s offensive success on Tuesday to work the Cardinals put in during practice. “Practice makes perfect,” he said. “Our coach has been drilling us to explode off the ball and we did that tonight. It helped us out a lot.”

While only one victory, Tuesday’s rout of Appleton East could prove to be a turning point for Fond du Lac as it gains more confidence with the postseason approaching in just a matter of weeks. “This team’s been hard to crush,” O’Connor said. “We haven’t had the results we’ve been looking for all year, but the guys have been in great spirits and coming into this game we definitely weren’t flat. … I think it will be good moving forward, but these guys are a tough team to break. We’ll move forward and roll with the momentum.”
