Three Cardinals earn all-FVA tennis honors

Three Fond du Lac tennis players were honored by the Fox Valley Association.

Honorable Mention

Singles: No. 3 – Kellie Hierl, fr., Fond du Lac.

Doubles: No. 1 – Madeline Bahr, sr./Annie Hierl, sr., Fond du Lac.

2015 Action Reporter Media All-Area Girls Tennis

After coming up just short of state in 2014, the Fond du Lac No. 1 doubles team of Annie Hierl and Maddie Bahr advanced to Madison this season.

As a result, Hierl and Bahr are the 2015 Action Reporter Media All-Area Girls Tennis Co-Players of the Year.

Although Hierl and Bahr fell in the first round of the WIAA Division 1 individual state tennis tournament, the pair finished the season with a 21-8 record and came in third and fourth place, respectively, in the Fox Valley Association tournament and Division 1 sectional tournament hosted by Oshkosh West. “Annie and Maddie are awesome players that have a lot of talent,” Fond du Lac coach Joe Sagen said. “They showed that they belong in the upper echelon of players in Madison. This is a great honor for them.”

  • Player(s) of the Year: Annie Hierl and Maddie Bahr, Fond du Lac

Annie Hierl and Maddie Bahr fall at state

MADISON — Annie Hierl and Maddie Bahr’s tremendous senior campaign for the Fond du Lac girls tennis team is over.

Hierl and Bahr, playing as Fond du Lac’s No. 1 doubles team, fell in the first round of the WIAA Division 1 girls tennis state tournament on Thursday afternoon at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Hierl/Bahr (21-8) lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to No. 9 seed Mary Zakowski and Claire Rotherham of Green Bay Notre Dame, ending their state journey after a single match, albeit a competitive one.

“They played their best match of the year,” Fond du Lac coach Joe Sagen said. “They did everything we asked them to do in a short span of time. They did exactly what they needed to do. One of the things I thought was going to happen was when the pressure comes on, are they going to revert to their old ways? It did not happen. They played it the way they needed to and it was just a great match.”

On the season, Hierl and Bahr, both seniors, finished third in the Fox Valley Association tournament and clinched their first state meet appearance with a fourth-place finish at last week’s sectional tourney.

In Thursday’s match, Hierl and Bahr fell behind 4-1 in the first set but battled back to make it competitive and kept it close throughout the second set. Even in the loss, both players thought they played well to end their high school careers. “I think we both played very well,” Hierl said. “They were an excellent team. We could have been a little more aggressive to start off, but with it being our first time there it was kind of surreal. Once the match started going, we just played the best we could.” “I think we had a rough start, but we definitely hung in there,” Bahr added. “I thought we played really well. I’d say that was definitely the best match we’ve ever played. We got into the net a lot and we were just being really consistent.”

Annie Hierl, Maddie Bahr advance to state

WIAA Division 1 sectionals: The Fond du Lac No. 1 doubles team of Annie Hierl and Maddie Bahr is heading to state.

Hierl and Bahr defeated Appleton East’s Roseanne Nooren and Daria Van De Loo 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of Thursday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional meet hosted by Oshkosh West, assuring themselves a spot in Madison.

Hierl and Bahr ended up in fourth place at sectionals, losing their next match to Neenah and falling in the third-place match to Hartford Union. “They’re playing with confidence,” Fond du Lac coach Joe Sagen said of Hierl and Bahr. “They’re playing really well. They have to adapt a little bit, but overall they’ve been playing really solidly.”

At No. 3 singles, Fond du Lac’s Kellie Hierl ended her season on a positive note — taking third place. Hierl lost to Neenah’s Megan Nasr before bouncing back with a 6-1, 6-3 win over West Bend East’s Kayla Furlano. “She played very, very well,” Sagen said of Hierl. “She’s an up-and-comer.”

No. 1 singles Melina Zompolas lost 6-0, 6-0 to Oshkosh West’s Emily Edsell in the first round on Thursday. “She lost her first-round match today, but she was a No. 6 seed coming in from the subsectional and she upset a No. 3 on Tuesday,” Sagen said. “She’s learned a lot this year and she’s a pretty quick study. I can’t say enough about how well she’s play towards the end here.”

Fond du Lac sends four to sectionals

BEAVER DAM – The Fond du Lac girls tennis team will be well-represented at Thursday’s sectional meet. The Cardinals advanced four players out of Tuesday’s WIAA Division 1 subsectional meet hosted by Beaver Dam — two singles players and a doubles team.

At No. 1 singles, Melina Zompolas qualified for the semifinal round of the subsectional, improving her record to 8-16 on the year and earning a spot at Fox Cities Racquet Club on Thursday.

No. 3 singles Kellie Hierl advanced to the subsectional finals on Tuesday, improving to 20-7 on the year and also moving on to sectionals.

Finally, the No. 1 doubles team of Annie Hierl and Maddie Bahr advanced to the semifinal round on Tuesday to clinch a spot at Thursday’s meet, improving its record to 20-5.

Thursday’s sectional meet is hosted by Oshkosh West and starts at 8:30 a.m.

Fond du Lac looks to surprise in FVA

Joe Sagen has only worked with his squad for a few days, but even in that limited time, he thinks it could make some noise in 2015. Sagen, in his first year coaching the Fond du Lac girls tennis team, believes the Cardinals have what it takes to surprise a few teams in the Fox Valley Association this season based on the depth they have returning. “Personally, I think we’ve got a chance to really surprise some people this year with our depth,” Sagen said. “You’re going to find that some meets we’re going to score our points more towards the No. 3 and No. 4 players as opposed to the No. 1 and No. 2 players. But I think when one doesn’t work out, the other will pick up where needed. I think you’ll find that with this team.”

Returning varsity players include Melina Zompolas, Lizabee Browy, Hailey Giese, Miranda Zipp, Maddie Bahr, Annie Hierl, Kendalynn Acheson, Toni Winkler, Mackenzie Chase and Ali Gendlinske. At the moment, Sagen and assistant coach Jordan Van Riper are still experimenting with different combinations of singles and doubles players to find a successful mix.

Easily the most important departure from last year’s squad is No. 1 singles player Nicole Feltz, who qualified for four state tournaments and is surely considered one of the best tennis players, male or female, to come through Fond du Lac. Although her graduation hurts the Cardinals on the court this year, her play for the past four years has inspired younger players.

“Nicole is a rare player. To get a player with her USTA ranking and on top of that, to be able to get to state all four years and to accomplish what she did in the conference is very remarkable,” Sagen said. “I think a lot of what she has done has kind of rubbed off on the girls that are coming in. What you’re seeing is some of the dedication, concentration levels and intensity that it takes to be what Nicole is. … There’s somewhat of a legacy there that she’s leaving for them to live up to expectations.”

With the season already getting underway on Saturday with a quadrangular at Oconomowoc, Sagen is happy with how his team looks despite only a couple days of practice. “I think they’re very excited to get this going,” Sagen said. “We jump right into a quad on Saturday. They’re ready to go and it’s fun. I love the enthusiasm.”
