Fond du Lac boys swimming looks for improvement

FOND DU LAC – With many of its stronger swimmers returning, the Fond du Lac boys swimming team has high expectations this season.

Last year, the Cardinals took fourth at the Fox Valley Association meet and finished eighth as a team at a WIAA Division 1 sectional meet in Neenah.

Fond du Lac coach Glen McBride thinks this season could see the Cardinals achieve quite a bit of success, notably from senior captain Cannon Lock.

“Luckily most of our strongest swimmers are back,” McBride said. “Last year’s (team) MVP Cannon Lock is a senior this year and he’s definitely our strongest kid in the water. He took it upon himself to start swimming year-round right after the high school season was over and he swam through the summer and this fall, so he’s really in great shape right now.”

Lock was third in the 100-yard breaststroke and was part of the 200-yard medley relay that also took third at the FVA meet last year. In addition, he was part of the 200-yard freestyle relay that was fourth. Lock was sixth in both the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke at sectionals.

McBride also expects twin brothers Ben and Abe Stoffel-Murray to have impressive seasons.

Ben Stoffel-Murray was part of the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams that were third in the conference a season ago and was fourth in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke. He was fifth in the 200 IM and sixth in the 100 backstroke at sectionals.

Abe Stoffel-Murray was part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished third at the FVA meet and was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay that was fourth.

“Ben was really strong last year in the IM and the backstroke, but he was our best swimmer on the 400 free relay that placed well at sectionals,” McBride said. “He’s just an all-around swimmer. … As far as being well-rounded, he’s as good as anybody on our team.

“His brother Abe was one of the most improved guys we had last year. His best events are probably in the medium distance freestyle, but he’s good in the IM and the backstroke.”

Sophomores Andrew Park and Nick Dilling were also mentioned by McBride as being swimmers to keep an eye on this season and noted that the team has five divers this year as well.

Because of the amount of experience Fond du Lac returns this season, McBride believes his team will be able to compete in many of its meets.

“I really think we can improve on our competitive level,” he said. “In the conference, I think Neenah is going to be very strong again. I’d like to say we could challenge Appleton North though we’ll see what happens. … I think second (in the conference) really isn’t out of the question. If we get some diving points to come through for us and we had good relays last year with just freshmen and sophomores. We should have a strong overall team.”

The last couple seasons have seen the Cardinals miss out on sending any of their swimmers to the WIAA Division 1 state meet and McBride says Lock especially hopes to break that drought.

“It’s definitely a focus for Cannon,” McBride said. “He’s really pumped up. He’s in great shape. I really think he’s got a strong chance.”
