Warbirds girls hockey falls to top-ranked Hudson

FOND DU LAC – All in all, Duane Woeshnick was encouraged.

The Fond du Lac co-op girls hockey coach knew the caliber of opponent his team had just faced. He also knew that the Warbirds weren’t too far behind.

Fond du Lac co-op fell behind 3-0 in the second period, but battled back against Hudson before eventually losing to the Raiders 4-2 in nonconference play on Friday night at Blue Line Family Ice Center.

“It’s very encouraging,” Woeshnick said of his squad’s performance. “It was Senior Night, so we did play everybody. We were able to keep everybody fresh, get everybody a lot of playing time. Down the road, we might see (Hudson) in the state semifinal game, so it’s a good preview of what to expect when we go down to state and hopefully play them.”

Hudson (18-5), the top-ranked team in the state in the latest Wisconsin Prep Hockey/Coaches poll, had all it could handle on Friday against Fond du Lac co-op — the No. 5 team in the state.

After a scoreless first period, the Raiders appeared to seize control with a three-goal second.

Gretta Mohrland scored 51 seconds into the period when Warbirds goalie Rebecca Binder mishandled a shot and Natalie Miller added another goal a few minutes later on a power play.

Finally, Angela Huepfel scored off a rebound at 9:42 to make the score 3-0.

But Fond du Lac co-op (19-3-2) didn’t go away.

Hattie Verstegen scored 4:12 into the third with a nice move and wrist shot near the goal and Morgan Brown smashed in a goal with five seconds remaining in the game. Hudson’s Anna Wilgren scored the Raiders’ fourth goal in between Verstegen and Brown’s.

Peyton Airaudi and Mary Skorupa had assists for Fond du Lac co-op, while Binder made 32 saves in net.

While the Warbirds battled hard for the entire 54 minutes of Friday’s game, they were a bit careless at times in committing five penalties — two of which led to power play goals for Hudson.

“You can’t put a team like this on the power play. They were like 34 percent coming in,” Woeshnick said. “As much as I say ‘Stay out of the box,’ we didn’t do that tonight. We had five penalties, which led to two power play goals, so they were 2-for-5. Take away those power play goals, it’s a 2-2 game.”

Meanwhile, Fond du Lac co-op certainly had its chances throughout Friday’s contest, putting 24 shots on goal, but wasn’t able to capitalize until the third period.

Immediately following Hudson’s first goal, Drew Deanovich fired a shot off the right post that many Warbirds players and coaches felt went into the net, but was waved off. Deanovich also had a clear breakaway later in the period stopped when Fond du Lac co-op was called for offsides.

Woeshnick believed that if his team had been able to score early on, it could have been a different game.

“I think if we get one early, that would have maybe changed the momentum a little bit,” he said. “Whether or not (Deanovich’s shot) did go in, I think by getting that goal the momentum would have changed. Our girls were a little frustrated, they thought it went in. But playing three periods of hockey, we had our scoring chances and just didn’t capitalize when we needed to.”

Moving into the postseason next week, top-seeded Fond du Lac co-op appears to be in great position to make a deep playoff run that could end with a berth at the WIAA state tournament. Woeshnick knows that begins with his senior class, which played its final regular-season home game on Friday.

“It starts with the nine seniors that we have,” he said. “It’s a great, solid team, but it starts with their leadership and I want to thank them for all their dedication and hard work over the past three or four seasons.”

Warbirds Claim Eastern Shores Conference Tournament Title

Mary Skorupa with 2 assists helps Fond du Lac to victory

The Warbirds used a complete team effort to come away with the Eastern Shores Conference tournament championship.  Maybe the photo to the left illustrates the effort the team exhibited.  The puck has slipped behind Fond du Lac goaltender, Rebecca Binder, but defenseman Drew Deanovich makes the save and knocks the puck away.

The first period ended the way the game began tied at zero.  Fond du Lac outshot Appleton 12 to 6 in the period, but both goalies were up to the task.

Fond du Lac was able to get on the board at 5:42 of the second, when Drew Deanovich scored with an assist from Mary Skorupa.  Peyton Airaudi boosted the Warbirds’ lead to two with Skorupa and Megan Sprinkman assisting with 4:05 remaining in the period.  Fond du Lac was assessed a major penalty for boarding at 13:51 of the second.  The period concluded with the score Fond du Lac 2 Appleton 1.

The Warbirds were able to kill off the rest of the major penalty in the third period.  Appleton cut the lead to 1 at 9:06 of the third, when Maddy Kapheim assisted on Annika Horman’s goal.  The score remained 2-1 and Appleton called timeout with 1:38 remaining in the game.  The ensuing face-off was in the United’s defensive zone.  The United cleared the puck from their zone with 1:19 remaining on the clock and Mckenzy Hoisington headed for the bench.  Appleton kept pressure in the offensive zone, but weren’t able to get the puck past Binder.  Fond du Lac was able to get clear the puck.   Hattie Verstagen iced the game with an empty net goal with 2.1 seconds remaining on the board.

Rebecca Binder finished the game with 24 saves, while Hoisington had 27 save for Appleton.

Warbirds notch three goals in final period for decisive win at Eastern Shores Conference Tournament semi-final game

Team 1 2 3 T
USM Wildcats 0 0 0 0
Fond du Lac 1 0 3 4

In the semi-finals of the Eastern Shores Conference Tournament, the University School co-op girls’ hockey team lost to Fond du Lac 4-0 in a game played on Wednesday, February 1st at the Blue Line Ice Center in Fond du Lac.

The Warbirds scored one goal in the first period then tallied three in the third period to take the win convincingly.  Sophomores Morgan Brown and Drew Deanovich and seniors Megan Sprinkman and Callie Tighe scored Fond du Lac’s goals.

Despite out shooting the Warbirds 31-29, the Wildcats were unable to put any shots past Rebecca Binder, the Warbirds’ senior goalie who recorded her sixth shutout of the season.

“We knew it was a big game,” said Jacob Haury, USM’s head coach.  “We just did not play well at all.  We need to put this in the past, re-group, and get ready for the playoffs.  They’re coming up soon, and we need to be ready.”

Brown scored what would be the game winner at 3:33 of the first period.  She got the puck along the right boards in center ice, skated into the USM zone and passed the puck to Tighe who was rushing down the slot with no backchecker nearby. Tighe closed in on Marie Dedert, the Wildcats’ sophomore goaltender.  Dedert stopped the puck.  Brown hustled in, pulled the puck away from the kneeling goalie, and shoveled it into an open area of the goal.

The teams played back and forth hockey for the remainder of the period and throughout the second period.  The progress of the game was marred by penalties.  Fondy had nine penalties in the contest, and the Wildcats were assessed for five.

One of those five cost the Wildcats.  It was given with no time left in the second period, permitting the Warbirds to start the third period on the power play.   It didn’t take the home team long to make use of the extra player.  Taking the center ice faceoff to start the period, Brown drew the puck back to the right to Deanovich.  Deanovich took off, skated around a defender inside the Wildcats’ blue line, and headed in on Dedert on a short breakaway.  From the lower edge of the right circle she bulleted a high shot to the far side to give the Warbirds a 2-0 lead at 0:07.

The Warbirds scored again at 10:18 at the tail end of a power play.  Sprinkman got the puck on the left boards in center ice.  She skated across the Wildcats’ line and avoided a sweeping stick check that swung a defender out of the play.  Sprinkman cut to the middle, and, from the high slot, she fired the puck.  Dedert made the save. The puck popped out to Sprinkman who had followed her shot in.  She got the rebound then pushed a backhander into the net.

The Warbirds completed their rout with 1:36 left in the period on a breakaway goal by Tighe.

The win allowed the Warbirds to head into the tournament’s championship game at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4th at Arrowhead High School in Hartland. with a record of 17-2-2 and 7-1 in the Eastern Shores Conference.  The Wildcats are 11-10-1 and 4-4 in the conference. They play for third place in the Eastern Shores Conference Tournament at 4:00p.m. on Saturday at Arrowhead.  The Wildcats will face the loser of the game between the Green Bay Bay Area Ice Bears and Appleton United that will be played on the night of Thursday, February 2nd in Green Bay.

Warbirds girls hockey aims for state title

FOND DU LAC – With a strong core of returning seniors, the Fond du Lac co-op girls hockey team is thinking big in 2016-17.

Really big.

“The main goal is to get down to state and win the state championship,” Fond du Lac co-op coach Duane Woeshnick said. “We have eight seniors on the roster and 14 letterwinners from last year return. The goal is to get down to state and win the state championship.”

Last year, the Warbirds went 19-5-2 and finished second in the Eastern Shores Conference behind University School of Milwaukee. Fond du Lac co-op eventually lost to Bay Area 3-1 in the WIAA sectional semifinals.

Although the Warbirds lose a couple key contributors from last year’s team in Kendalynn Acheson (30 points), an honorable mention on the 2015-16 Wisconsin Girls Hockey Coaches Association all-state team and second team All-ESC performer, and Miranda Zipp (25), an All-ESC honorable mention, they bring back many seniors, as Woeschnick mentioned.

Second team All-ESC goaltender Rebecca Binder is back, as is second team All-ESC defender Kylee Dyni. All-ESC honorable mention forward Callie Tighe returns, too.

Dyni and Binder were also honorable mentions on the WGHCA all-state team last year.

In addition to Binder (14-3-2, 1.63 goals-against average, .922 save percentage in 2015-16), Dyni (20 points) and Tighe (30), other seniors include Maddy Ott, Peyton Airaudi, Megan Sprinkman, Amber Lemmenes and goalie Ashley Schmitt.

Players like Mary Skorupa (27 points), Maike Zipp (25), Morgan Brown (23) and Drew Deanovich (21) also return for the Warbirds.

“We’re focusing on defense first,” Woeshnick said. “If we can not have our opponents score and get that shutout, all it takes is to provide a little bit of offense. We’re trying to build around our defense and goaltending. We do have some scorers up front, but our main goal is to keep the opponents off the scoreboard. Getting as many shutouts as we can and then obviously provide some scoring up front as well.”

Obviously if Fond du Lac co-op believes it can compete for a berth to the state tournament, it also hopes to challenge for the Eastern Shores Conference championship this winter. While Woeshnick acknowledged the strength of the league, he thinks his team should be right in the mix.

“U-School is going to be right up there again as well as Bay Area,” he said. “You have a wide of variety of teams in our conference that are getting stronger every year. Fox Cities, Appleton and right all the way through the bottom, our conference is getting really strong. It’s one of the strongest conferences in the whole state. Last year, out of the top 10 (ranked) teams, four (ESC) teams were ranked — U-School, Bay Area, us and Fox Cities.

“It’s a very strong conference, which helps us get better in preparation for the playoffs and getting us down to the state tournament.”

On paper, Fond du Lac co-op has a team that should compete for a trip to state. There’s no doubt about it. But if the Warbirds are to fulfill their goal of getting to Madison and returning to Fond du Lac with a gold trophy, Woeshnick thinks it starts with the senior class.

“I think it starts with our eight seniors,” he said. “In practice right now, most of them have been with me three to four years and it starts with their leadership. Most teams that make it down to state usually have a good core of seniors to provide that leadership and I’m looking forward to seeing how our eight seniors respond to this year, as far as it being their last season as a Warbird.”

Fond du Lac co-op began its season by going 3-0 at a tournament it hosted last weekend in Waupun, defeating the Stoughton Icebergs, Northland Pines and Appleton United.
