Fond du Lac baseball holds off Oshkosh West

Things were rolling right along for Jason Schneider on Thursday. The Fond du Lac pitcher had held Oshkosh West to just a single hit and appeared on his way to another strong win in what’s been a fantastic spring.

Then came the seventh inning. An error, then a double down the right field line and suddenly Schneider was in a jam. It was no problem for the junior right-hander.

Schneider fired a two-hitter, working out of some seventh-inning drama, as the Fond du Lac baseball team held off Oshkosh West 3-2 in Fox Valley Association play Thursday evening at the Fond du Lac Youth Baseball Complex. “Jason gutted it out, just like he did all day,” Fond du Lac coach Marty Paulsen said of the final inning. “It was Jason’s day.”

Prior to the seventh, Schneider allowed only a single in the fifth inning and was cruising going into the final frame. However, Oshkosh West’s Timmy Rogers reached on an error to start the seventh and advanced to third on Nathan Jaeger’s double down the right-field line. Rogers scored on a Jake Esson groundout to first base and Jaeger crossed home on a Matt Rebholz sacrifice fly.

But Schneider dug in and struck out Carter Footit on a checked swing to earn the complete-game victory.

“Once they scored the two (runs), my confidence boosted because nobody was on base,” Schneider said. “I was like ‘Let’s just get this guy and end the game.'” Schneider struck out six and didn’t walk a batter on Thursday, keeping the Wildcats off-balance from the start. “I was hitting the corners with my fastball, I was mixing the pitches like my last game (against Hortonville),” Schneider said. “I was getting a lot of ground balls and pop-ups and the defense played great for me.”

Fond du Lac (8-5, 5-5 FVA) scored all three of its runs in the first inning to get the early lead on Oshkosh West (5-7, 3-7 FVA).

Reggie Hernandez led off with a single and stole second base. After Jack Cole popped out, Blake Schmidt crushed a double to right-center field, scoring Hernandez. Schneider followed with a walk and Ryan Norton ripped a double of his own to plate Schmidt. Parker Veness hit a sac fly to account for the final run.

It was a nice bounce-back win for the Cardinals, who dropped a 4-0 decision to Kimberly on Tuesday. The victory keeps Fond du Lac in the mix of FVA contenders as the season quickly moves toward its final stages.

“The bottom line is it keeps us in the hunt,” Paulsen said. “We’ve won of six of our last eight games, and one was a 1-0 loss. … Overall a great victory tonight and we’ve got a big week next week.”

The Cardinals used a five-run sixth inning to pull out a victory over the rival Spartans in Fox Valley Association action.

Trailing 4-3, Fond du Lac got RBI doubles from Carver Nolan and Jack Cole in the sixth to take the lead.

Cole picked up the win in relief and was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Jason Schneider, Fond du Lac knock off Hortonville

A month into the season, close games have been the nemesis of the Fond du Lac baseball team. 2-0, 1-0, 5-2, 1-0 — the Cardinals always seemed to come out on the short end. On Friday evening, Fond du Lac found a way to win one of those close games and in the process, proved it can compete with anyone in the Fox Valley Association.

Jason Schneider threw a complete game and Reggie Hernandez came up with a big hit in the fourth inning as Fond du Lac edged conference-leading Hortonville 3-2 in FVA action at the Fond du Lac Youth Baseball Complex. “We’ve lost all four games this year by a total of seven runs and we beat a really good team tonight,” Fond du Lac coach Marty Paulsen said. “These kids can play and they all work hard.”

Schneider struck out nine and allowed six hits, keeping Hortonville off-balance with a mixture of off-speed pitches, including a curveball and change-up. “I was mixing my pitches well and I was hitting the corners,” Schneider said. “They couldn’t really touch them, I guess. … The curveball they just kept on looking at. They weren’t swinging much and I felt that if they keep on doing that, I’ll keep on throwing strikes. But the change-ups they couldn’t really touch either.”

Fond du Lac (6-4, 3-4 FVA) grabbed an early lead in the first inning when Blake Schmidt hit a double to right field, scoring Jack Cole. The Hortonville player attempting to field Schmidt’s fly ball was blinded by the setting sun and was unable to track it down.

Hortonville (9-3, 6-3 FVA) did respond in the second with a Braden VanCamp RBI single to tie the game at a run apiece.

The Cardinals took the lead for good in the fourth inning.

After Peyton Head reached on a fielder’s choice and Carver Nolan was hit by a pitch, Hernandez came to the plate with two outs.

The Cardinals’ leadoff hitter scorched a deep shot to left, over the Hortonville fielder’s head, and in the process gave Fond du Lac a 3-1 lead. Hernandez would end up with a double. “I was 0-for-2 before that at-bat and I knew I was due,” Hernandez said. “I’ve been on a hot streak lately and I knew I was due up, so I had to pull one off for the team.”

The Polar Bears scored on a passed ball in the fifth and had a runner on third with two outs, but Schneider struck out Colton Glocke to end the threat. Schneider took care of business in the sixth and seventh innings to earn the complete-game win, striking out Dylan Loveland for the final out.

“Jason gutted it out,” Paulsen said. “He battled. He kept wanting the ball. … When I guy’s battling like that, you give him a shot (to pitch a complete game). If he had walked the first guy or given up a base hit, then maybe we would have thought about pulling him. But he was sharp in the seventh.”

The win puts the Cardinals right in the middle of a competitive FVA and gives them confidence moving forward into the second half of the season. “We can compete with anybody in this conference,” Schneider said. “We’ve just got to keep pitching well, hitting well and playing defense.”

Oshkosh North edges Fond du Lac baseball

In a game where hits and runs were at a premium, it’s fitting that a defensive miscue was the difference.

Unfortunately for the Fond du Lac baseball team, shaky defense in one inning was enough to spoil a tremendous pitching performance from Peyton Head.

Oshkosh North scored an unearned run in the sixth inning and Josh Leib pitched a complete-game three-hitter as the Spartans edged the Cardinals 1-0 Thursday evening in a Fox Valley Association game played at the Fond du Lac Youth Baseball Complex.

“Peyton pitched superb,” Fond du Lac coach Marty Paulsen said. “Defensively we had some miscues, but I just told them they’ve got to be a little more aggressive and go get the ball. … Those things will come.”

In the midst of a scoreless contest in the sixth inning, Oshkosh North finally broke through for a run thanks to a few errors. After Kyle Waller led off with a strikeout, Alex Noe reached on a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Mitch Peterson then hit a soft pop fly to center field, but Carver Nolan couldn’t handle it.

Following a strikeout, pinch-hitter Josh Hassman hit a ground ball to Fond du Lac shortstop Reggie Hernandez. Hernandez had to range right and when he was just about to field it, the ball took an odd hop and it glanced off his glove. Noe made a dash for home and Hernandez’s throw was offline.

That run was enough, as Fond du Lac (0-2, 0-2 FVA) couldn’t get anything going against Leib, who struck out eight and walked three. “He’s a great competitor,” Oshkosh North coach Troy Schaefer said of Leib. “He’s got pretty good stuff. He’s got some good off-speed, and he mixed it well. He struggled early in the game. He didn’t have an offspeed for the first three innings. We always say as a pitcher, you’re either a thoroughbred or a workhorse and today he was a workhorse for the first half. Then he found it.”

Hernandez had a deep double to left field in the third inning, but that was really about the only offense the Cardinals could muster on Thursday. Nolan and Jason Schneider both had singles.

After being shut out by Oshkosh West on Tuesday, Fond du Lac has yet to score a run this season. “They haven’t seen (much) live pitching yet. They’ve seen coaches throw and they’ve seen each other throw,” Paulsen said. “They’ve batted well indoors, but you can’t see very well with the lights and everything else and you’re stuck in a cage. It’s not realistic.”

Despite allowing only two hits, Head was saddled with the loss. He had seven strikeouts and three walks before being relieved by Jack Cole in the seventh inning.

Oshkosh North 000 001 0 — 1 2 0

Fond du Lac 000 000 0 — 0 3 3

Fond du Lac bats kept quiet in opening loss

OSHKOSH – When Fond du Lac baseball coach Marty Paulson looked at the scoreboard and saw the two runs starting pitcher Jason Schneider and a near-perfect defense held Oshkosh West to on Tuesday, he had to be happy. He just would have liked to see a different number on the Cardinals side of the tally.

Jason Schneider allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter, but Fond du Lac couldn’t generate any offense to back him, falling 2-0 to the Wildcats in its season opener at Peppler Field.

“If someone would have told me he would have given up just two runs I would have taken it,” Paulson said. “(Monday) was the first time we were outside, so we haven’t seen much live (pitching) outdoors. The at bats will come. It’s hard. Pitchers are way ahead in the spring.”

Schneider certainly kept the Cardinals in the game. The right-handed hurler did not walk a batter, while striking out five and allowed four balls to reach the outfield. Three of the four hits he allowed were to West’s No. 3 hitter Ben Kohl, while two of those singles each produced runs.

“Jason did a heck of a job this early in the season,” Paulson said. “His breaking ball was working, but he was also hitting the corners with his fastball. And he didn’t have a lot for a pitch count and I was happy with that, this early in the year with the cold.”

Fond du Lac committed just one error behind Schneider and that miscue was quickly erased by a defensive gem by second baseman Jack Cole.

With one out and runners at first and second in the sixth inning, Cole charged into the baseline to field a ground ball, tagged the passing runner and then fired to first to complete the double play.

“We made some nice plays on the infield today,” Paulson said, also highlighting a pair of leaping grabs at second by Cole. “I thought overall both teams played well defensively.”

As solid as the pitching and defense were for the Cardinals, they just couldn’t get the bats going against West’s top pitcher Michael McBriar.

Reggie Hernandez went 2-for-3 to account for both of Fond du Lac’s hits in the game, while Blake Schmidt reached base twice on walks. Carver Nolen also drew a walk in the game, but that was it for baserunners for the Cardinals, who had just one player reach base over the final four innings.

“Their pitcher was outstanding today and we have such a young team this year,” Paulson said. “Overall, I thought our kids did well and I was overly pleased, except that we would have liked to come out with the win instead.”

Cardinals Prepare for Season Opener

With a squad composed of a bunch of underclassmen, the Cardinals struggled to play with much consistency last season — finishing in a tie for last place in the Fox Valley Association.

Longtime coach Marty Paulsen, who is entering his 48th year leading Fond du Lac, believes that his team should be improved heading into this spring.

Junior pitchers Peyton Head and Jason Schneider return, while Jack Cole, Reggie Hernandez, Ryan Norton, Carver Nolan and Blake Schmidt are back in the field.

Cole, only a sophomore, hit .448 last year, while Hernandez batted .358. Head had a 3-2 record on the mound with just a 0.72 ERA.
