Fondy girls golf dealing with low numbers
FOND DU LAC – The Fond du Lac girls golf team is struggling with low participation numbers to begin the 2016 season and it’s unlikely the Cardinals will be able to field a full squad.
Only senior Cassidy Kahl and sophomore Gabrielle Emmer are currently on the team according to Fond du Lac coach Patti Pelischek, leaving the Cardinals in a situation where they won’t be able to compete at the team level.
Fond du Lac lost three golfers to graduation — Madeline Krolczyk, Ashley Anderson and Hannah Lange — and a couple others Pelischek expected to contribute aren’t going out for the team in 2016.
That leaves Kahl, who last year finished 18th at a WIAA Division 1 regional hosted by Oshkosh West, and Emmer. Emmer played on the JV squad in 2015.
Pelischek plans on placing Kahl in the No. 1 slot this season and thinks she could make some noise individually. “Cassidy has worked on her game a lot,” Pelischek said. “She takes private lessons and has some gone to camps and things like that. She’s very determined, very level-headed. She’s a very good decision-maker. I expect her to do well. I think a reasonable goal for her would be first team all-conference and I’d like to see her at least get through to sectionals, if not further.” With a strong short game and an even approach, Pelischek described Kahl as a solid player. “I think her short game is pretty good and I see her as being very controlled,” Pelischek said. “She doesn’t take a lot of chances. She’s not a real big risk-taker. She’s not real wild. Everything is pretty much down the middle and she doesn’t get herself into a lot of trouble.”
As for Emmer, who’s playing on varsity for the first time, Pelischek is simply focused on her improvement. By the end of the season, she wants to see a different golfer than the one that began the year. “For her, my goals are going to be more individual,” Pelischek said of Emmer. “Working on individual parts of her game, so that she can be a better player overall. I’m hoping that she can average in the 50s somewhere by the end of the year. Last year, she tended to be the type of player that one day could be going well and the next day wouldn’t. One hole could be going well and the next one wouldn’t. We’re going to work a lot on consistency and confidence.”
Pelischek is hopeful this season will be just a bump in the road and that the program will be back to having solid participation numbers in 2017. She’s looking to start drumming up some interest in the program beginning next summer.
“We’ve talked a little bit about starting up some camps for kids in grades 4-8 to get those kids more involved,” she said. “I’m going to try and work with our administration at school to try and do a camp for girls next summer and start drawing some interest.”
