Fondy tennis sends four to sectionals

BEAVER DAM – The Fond du Lac girls tennis team had four players advance to sectionals from Monday’s WIAA Division 1 subsectional meet, hosted by Beaver Dam.

At No. 1 singles, Fond du Lac’s Kellie Hierl won her match 6-0, 6-1 to move on to the semifinal round and secure her spot in sectionals.

Meanwhile, at No. 2 singles, Claire Weston was victorious in her matches 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 to advance to finals and qualify for sectionals.

Players in the No. 1 flight need only advance to semifinals to qualify for sectionals, while competitors in the No. 2, 3 and 4 flights must advance to finals.

No. 3 singles player Ally Gietzel won her matches 6-0, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-1 to qualify for sectionals, while No. 4 singles Jamie Ayer won 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 to move on.

Fond du Lac doesn’t qualify anyone for state

APPLETON – The Fond du Lac girls tennis team did not have anyone qualify for the state individual girls tennis tournament at Thursday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional meet hosted by Oshkosh North at Fox Cities Racquet Club in Appleton.

No. 1 singles player Kellie Hierl lost in the first round to Neenah’s Anna Beyer 6-2, 6-1 and was eliminated from the sectional.

Meanwhile, No. 2 singles player Claire Weston finished in second place. Weston defeated Appleton North’s Lydia Dean 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, but fell to Neenah’s Jordyn Lawatsch 6-2, 6-0 in the championship match.

At No. 3 singles, Ally Gietzel took third. Gietzel lost to Neenah’s Hannah Dorsey 6-3, 6-0 in the first round, but defeated West Bend East’s Kira Koenitzer 6-0, 6-0 in the third-place match.

No. 4 singles player Jamie Ayer lost to Neenah’s Ellie Callahan 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and then fell to Hartford Union’s Olivia Carroll 6-2, 6-3 in the third-place match.

Fond du Lac coach Joe Sagen said both Hierl and Weston have a chance to advance to Madison as special qualifiers, which won’t be determined until later this week.
