Fond du Lac girls swimming looking strong

FOND DU LAC – With a strong contingent of returning swimmers, Fond du Lac girls swimming coach Lauren Zivkovich believes her Cardinals should be a formidable squad in 2016.

Junior Kristilee McCadden, who qualified for the WIAA Division 1 state meet last year in the 200-yard freestyle, is back and so are seniors Kalli Behling, Amanda Wciorka, Kaitlyn Munger and Sky Schneider as well as juniors Amanda Wciorka and Madi Michels.

“My expectations are very similar to last year, it’s for these girls to swim their hearts out and swim with pride and do the best they can every single meet,” Zivkovich said. “They’re not always going to swim 100 percent or where they think they should be every time because that’s just not how swimming works. You can’t swim your best race every time.”

Zivkovich anticipates McCadden competing in a bunch of freestyle events this fall — anywhere from the 100 to the 500 — as the junior is typically able to fill in wherever the Cardinals need her.

Meanwhile, Behling will be competing in the shorter freestyle events and the butterfly and Wciorka is expected to be a freestyle sprinter and 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke competitor.

Michels is expected to be a freestyle swimmer and Munger will focus mostly on the 500 freestyle. Schneider will be a butterfly competitor.

Although Fond du Lac does return the vast majority of its swimmers from a season ago, it loses diver Maddy Corbin — a two-time state qualifier. Zivkovich thinks incoming freshman Allie Schnell could step into that role and has had some help from Corbin herself.

“What’s great about Allie is she’s got that gymnastics background,” Zivkovich said. “She’s already picking up on so many things. Maddy’s been helping her recently and she’s got a complete dive list she can compete with for several weeks already, so she’s going to do great things this year.”

Last year, Fond du Lac finished in the bottom half of the Fox Valley Association, but just barely. Although Zivkovich knows the conference is strong top to bottom, she’s hopeful the Cardinals can break into the upper 50 percent.

“The FVA itself is strong,” she said. “Every team is going to put up a good meet. It’s an ‘A’ game or a no game at this point. … (Improving in conference) is always a hope. It’s something we strive for. We want to be the best team we possibly can be.”

With the Cardinals’ first meet coming up at De Pere on Thursday, Zivkovich is looking forward to the start of the season.

“I do think it’s going to be a great season,” she said. “These girls, you can see the heart and soul they put into practices and I only hope that that can transfer into meets and the girls can be as successful as they hope to be and we strive to be. Time will tell how well this puzzle really fits together and I think this year we have a stronger set of puzzle pieces to make our team.”
