Fond du Lac boys tennis returns significant talent

FOND DU LAC – Although the Fond du Lac boys tennis team will be without some key talent from last year’s squad, the Cardinals return a few skilled players in 2017.

The biggest loss for the Cardinals is last season’s No. 1 singles player Matt Riley — a four-time WIAA Division 1 individual state meet qualifier. Riley went to state three times as part of a doubles team and last year in singles.

Matt Schneider, part of Fond du Lac’s No. 1 doubles team that qualified for state in 2016, is also gone, as is No. 3 doubles player Ben Pertl.

That in mind, the Cards do return Moosa Syed, who teamed up with Schneider at No. 1 doubles last year. Syed and Schneider won their first match at state last year, defeating New Berlin Eisenhower’s Patrick McCormick and Xavier Loomer, 6-4, 6-3.

The No. 2 doubles team of Felix Cloutier and Kyle Leisses, also a state qualifier in 2016, is back as well. Cloutier and Leisses lost their first match at state.

“We have seven returning senior letterwinners and a couple of underclassmen that have worked hard in the offseason that round out our varsity team,” Fond du Lac coach Joe Sagen said. “We have a team of deep experience that will help greatly”
