Warbirds find success in second year of merger

Merging rival athletic programs is not an easy task. For the Fond du Lac Warbirds and Beaver Dam girls hockey programs, the first year in their new Warbirds/Beaver Dam alliance was a rocky transition.

But one year later, the alliance is ranked third in the state with an undefeated record. On the ice, the roster — which includes 10 seniors — is seeing success, and off the ice, they are starting to look more like a team.

“Fond du Lac, Beaver Dam and Waupun have always had a rivalry almost,” Waupun senior forward Morgan Brown said. “Us coming together was like two rival teams trying to get along, but we’re getting there.”

“We were both such strong programs, being Warbirds and then having the Beaver Dam people join us,” Fond du Lac senior defenseman Christy Sabel added. “It wasn’t more the girls. It was just logistics stuff.”

Co-head coach Duane Woeshnick, who has been with the girls hockey program for seven years, said Fond du Lac and Beaver Dam made the decision to merge because of low participation. The teams were expected to have just 10 skaters and potentially no goalie.

The formation of the alliance brought the roster to 23 players, including five seniors from Fond du Lac and Waupun and five from Beaver Dam. The high level of experience is the team’s greatest asset, and it is 8-0 almost midway through the season, Woeshnick said.

The alliance also has a strong goalie in sophomore Abby Okon, who boasts a .971 save percentage. Fond du Lac senior forward Maike Zipp said Okon’s strong goaltending has saved the Warbirds early this season.

But despite the undefeated record, which includes four shutouts, seniors say the biggest room for improvement is on offense.

“Scoring goals — we’ve had a lot of opportunities. We just aren’t capitalizing as much as we should,” Zipp said.

Brown added that getting a couple more pucks in the net per game would be the cherry on top of the Warbirds’ early success. The team has spent the last two weeks focusing on shooting — working with the goalies to hit their spots and placing their shots.

“Once we put the puck on the net, eventually it’ll go in, so just keeping our shots on the goal and crashing the net for those rebounds,” Waupun senior forward Claire Bresser said.

The Warbirds/Beaver Dam Alliance is the only undefeated team in the Eastern Shores Conference. With the talent in the Eastern Shores, it’s shocking to Fond du Lac senior defenseman Drew Deanovich.

Most of the Eastern Shores teams make it to the state top 10 by the end of the season, Woeshnick said.

“We may win some games. We may lose some games, but having that Eastern Shores Conference be so strong, we can benefit from it, and it makes us better down the road,” Woeshnick said.

Zipp has played with many of the Fox Cities players and said that the Stars, currently third in conference, are the team’s biggest challenge. “I guess you never can count a team out,” Brown said of the conference. “They always bring something late in the season.”

In week 4, the alliance is ranked third in state behind Eau Claire and Central Wisconsin. On Dec. 27, the Warbirds play Chippewa Falls followed by No. 1 Eau Claire in a holiday tournament at Tri County Ice Arena.

“That’ll be a good test for us, this holiday tournament, to see where we’re at against a No. 1-ranked team in the state,” Woeshnick said.

In year two of the merger, the team implemented new ways to build chemistry on and off the ice. Woeshnick said many of the girls played together on a U-14 team in eighth grade. Now those seniors are able to try for a state title together.

Zipp said while the Fond du Lac and Beaver Dam girls were somewhat segregated in their first year as one team, the state title game brought the program closer together. “We were like ‘Oh gosh, we’re a team,’” Zipp said.

This year, the team organizes dinners together as an added way to get to know each other off the ice. Parents cook spaghetti that the players enjoy when they have games or practices. Deanovich said that during this meals, teammates take turns asking icebreaker questions.

Off the ice, Bresser said the girls have a group chat. On the ice, it’s all about the time spent at practice in Fond du Lac or Beaver Dam. “Just playing with each other on the line and meshing,” Bresser said.

For seniors Deanovich, Zipp, Brown and Sabel, the last four years of their high school athletics careers have been all Warbirds hockey.

Last year, the team was able to make it to the state tournament, but Brown said it wasn’t how the team wanted to end the season. The Warbirds lost to Sun Prairie 3-1 in overtime in the state semifinals.

“We were really nervous that game. We had a lot of players that were kind of off because of the bigger rink and all the pressure. I feel like we’d do better if we made it again,” Sabel said.

This year, the goal is to get a step further, advance to the state championship game and hopefully win it.

It would mean everything, Zipp said.
