Oshkosh North 3 Fond du Lac  0

Both first half goals came at perfect times for Oshkosh North on Tuesday night as the Spartans claimed a 3-0 win over Fond du Lac on J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium as the Cardinals were shutout for the second straight night in Oshkosh.

Oshkosh North (1-1 in the FVA) was coming off two straight shutout losses and were dealing with an energetic Fond du Lac squad at the start when the Spartans were able to seize the momentum with an early goal.

North carried the 1-0 lead throughout the first half and looked to be taking that advantage into intermission. But before the halftime horn could sound, the Spartans added another key goal. Valdez lofted a corner kick into the penalty area that eventually found its way to Elle Lieder. Lieder poked the ball toward the goal but it was saved off the goal line by a Cardinal defender.

The rebound, though, came right to Ruby Salbego who buried a rising shot into the net with just 23 seconds left in the first half to give North a 2-0 cushion at intermission.

“After Alyssa’s goal early in the game we sort of lost some energy so it was important that we got that goal before half and go in strong the second half,” Salbego said. “I think it was really important. (A goal before halftime) really changes the game.”

Most of the second half was a stalemate in the midfield as neither team generated many scoring chances.

Fond du Lac did a better job of containing Oshkosh North’s attackers and limited the through balls the Spartans attempted. That resulted in some better scoring opportunities, but the Cardinals – who suffered a 4-0 shutout loss to Oshkosh West at the same venue on Monday – struggled to put shots on goal when they had the chances.

“Being inside the gym the last two weeks doesn’t do a whole lot for the attacking side, it’s always the last thing to come together each year,” Peterson said. “We got that response in the second half defensively, same thing as (Monday) night. When we go over the defensive side at halftime, they do a real good job of processing that and getting it going.”

But with Fond du Lac pressing the issue a bit more over the final 20 minutes, Oshkosh North got another goal from Salbego – this one coming with less than five minutes left – that all but secured the win.
