The Fond du Lac girls basketball team lost four Fox Valley Association games by 10 or fewer points and finished 3-15 in conference last season. Coach Jeff Bell said the Cardinals want to be fundamentally solid to turn those close losses into wins this season. With a young roster and only three proven contributors, it’ll be a challenge. To mitigate the youth, Fond du Lac has adjusted its offense to be more rigid and require less thinking.“They’ll be more set in what we’re going to do when we make a pass or we’re going to go to the screen,” Bell said. “It’s not as much ad-lib. So a little more control.”

Sophomore guard Sophia Langille is the clear first option on offense after Joslyn Herbeck graduated in the spring. The 5-foot-6 Langille performed well as a freshman and averaged team highs of 4.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists along with 9.3 points. Her 47% shooting percentage and 44% mark on 3-pointers were also encouraging. But she also averaged a team-high 3.7 turnovers and said she learned to be more disciplined as her freshman season progressed. “It’s obviously going to be hard because I’m probably going to have the best player matched up on me, so I’m going to have to have my teammates step up and help me out a lot,” Langille said. Sophomore Hallie Treptow and senior Morgan Wallendal are the two proven varsity contributors. Treptow averaged 4.7 rebounds and 3.6 points and Wallendal averaged 3.1 points. Having good communication, boxing out on every possession and limiting mental mistakes will be key for Fond du Lac’s success. “A lot of young players are going to get the opportunity to play JV and varsity, so they’ll get extra quarters, extra minutes,” Bell said. “I think the best thing for most of these girls is just to play at this level, and it’s going to be learn as we go, making sure when we fall down we just pick them right up and we keep going.”
