Fondy hires Omro coach Brian Schleif as softball head coach
Brian Schleif is the new head coach of the Fond du Lac High School softball team. He joins the two-time defending regional champions after a seven-year stint with Omro. Fond du Lac softball has had a rejuvenation after bottom-dwelling in the Fox Valley Association before 2018, finishing seven of the previous nine seasons in last place. Adam Rushing resigned from head coaching duties in late August.
Schleif, a Fond du Lac resident since 2005 and former student at UW-Fond du Lac, was intrigued by leading a Division 1 program and living closer to where he coaches. His roundtrip commute to Omro was 70 miles. He lives five minutes from Fond du Lac. “The thing I’m most excited about is being able to coach for my community,” Schleif said. “There’s a ton of talent in the softball program, and it’s D1. Why would you not want to coach D1? All of the resources and the number of kids that want to play softball is awesome.” He’s been active in the Fond du Lac slow pitch community, playing co-ed and managing a men’s team. He’s served on the Fond du Lac softball board for over 10 years.
Fond du Lac athletic director David Michalkiewicz thinks Schleif is a good fit because of his “enthusiasm for the game of softball, his ability to develop relationships and to, hopefully, build a quality winning culture and his interest in investing in youth programs.” Michalkiewicz also said he wanted someone with experience as head coach for the players. Schleif beat out two other candidates.
He wants to unite the travel ball communities in Fond du Lac under one roof. He started a high school travel team in Omro. “My goal is to get all the youth programs in town under one umbrella so we all have a common goal,” Schleif said. “The Fondy Fusions are really good, and I know that the rec programs are solid, but I want to improve on every level. That’s one of my main goals.”
Two Fond du Lac players play for the Wisconsin Bandits in Horicon and another plays for the Wisconsin Red Birds in Mayville. Schleif said a lot of the roster plays travel ball for Fondy Fusion in Fond du Lac. The uptick in wins over the last few years at Fond du Lac was also attractive to Schleif. The 2019 season was the first time in the 2010s that Fondy had a winning record overall or in the FVA. The Cardinals finished 17-9 overall and 10-8 in the FVA.
“My goal is to push them past the regionals final,” Schleif said. “We want to make it to state, win the sectionals and continue on. We did lose some seniors that were really good hitters, really good power hitters, but it’s my goal to develop the incoming freshmen and returning lettermen and get them ready to go for the season. “Every year I’ve coached softball (the goal) is always to finish in the top three in conference and get a home game in the sectional playoffs and then make a drive to state.” Schleif says he believes in hard work and that the best players should play, but helps players reach their goals. He added that he plans to have Fond du Lac softball a powerhouse before his 4-year-old daughter reaches high school.
