Fond du Lac football’s unforgettable team completes memorable season – ‘I’ve never seen an offense like this”
Fond du Lac football assistant coach Steve Jorgensen has led three teams to WIAA Division 1 state championships. He’s never been around what the Fond du Lac Cardinals did this year. The No. 1 ranked Cardinals scored a season high in points during their season finale and convincing win 71-47 victory against No. 2 Kimberly (6-1) on Friday.
Kimberly’s defense allowed 8.8 points per game through its first six contests. Fond du Lac (7-0) scored eight times as many points as that decimated average. It proved to the team that it would have been state champions during a typical season. The Cardinals scored on Kimberly just like it had against more inferior opponents, but they reached 71 because they didn’t sit their starters until the last offensive drive.
The offenses of Jorgensen’s back-to-back state championship Kimberly teams in 2007 and 2008 and his 2003 Oshkosh North title-winning squad didn’t match this Fond du Lac team. “I’ve never quite seen an offense like this one,” Jorgensen said. “I’ve never seen an offense like this.” He said what makes this offense unusual was its two lead ballcarriers, quarterback Kyle Walljasper and University of Wisconsin commit Braelon Allen, who each led the state with 21 touchdowns rushing during the alternate fall season.
Walljasper also finished with the most yards rushing (1,481). Allen finished third in yards with 1,039. A large percentage of their touchdowns were long, breakaway runs. Allen didn’t regularly play running back until midway through the 2019 season. “Two really special guys in the backfield and an offensive line and a fullback, and good receivers that really jelled and just really put it all together,” Jorgensen said. “But those two guys in the backfield are once-in-a-lifetime kids. Both Walljasper and Braelon. Unbelievable football players.”
Allen will play defense at Wisconsin, but his great size, speed and athleticism made him arguably the state’s toughest offensive player to touch, nonetheless tackle.
“It was special to see him get so big,” Walljasper said. “It’s crazy. He’s going to do some great things. Be an NFL player one day.”Walljasper isn’t playing at the Division I level as he’ll play at Division II Minnesota-Duluth. What makes a player great is different at every level of a sport. Jorgensen had high praise for Walljasper and said he’s arguably the best high school player he’s seen. Like Allen, Walljasper added muscle and speed after the 2019 season, when Fond du Lac was upset in the second round of the playoffs by Sun Prairie. Walljasper had a knack for running through the correct hole, shifting and outrunning defenders, too. “I’ve been around a while and he’s probably the best high school football player, this season he put together, that I’ve ever seen,” Jorgensen said. “The guy was averaging, coming into this game, 18 yards per carry, and I don’t think he did anything but kept that up right where it is tonight. So it was incredible. Then he’s a great linebacker, too, and he can pass the ball. Just dominant performance by him the whole year.”
Fond du Lac did the little things right, too, this season and won the big moments against Kimberly. In the first half, Fond du Lac stopped Kimberly on a fourth down that allowed it to steal a possession of high value. Both teams scored on each drive while Fond du Lac led 28-21. Allen scored a 31-yard touchdown rushing a few plays later to give Fond du Lac a two-touchdown lead. Kimberly made the score 35-28 heading into halftime, but Fond du Lac made another game-changing play.
Jorgensen suggested his son and head coach Steven Jorgensen call an onside kick to begin the third quarter. Fond du Lac recovered the kick, stole another possession and made it a two-score game again. Then its defense played complementary football and made another fourth-down stop. Walljasper scored a 44-yard touchdown rushing to make the game 49-28 and out of reach for Kimberly to come back despite 9:10 remaining in the third quarter. He finished with a season-high 320 yards and five touchdowns rushing and added one touchdown passing. Allen had four touchdowns rushing and a season-high 270 yards rushing.
“This chemistry, I’ve never been a part of something like that,” Walljasper said. “Everyone’s just got each other’s back. We all know each other from seniors to freshmen. We’ve been together for so long just practicing for these moments, so we’re pretty tight.” Allen echoed similar sentiments before he enrolls one year early at Wisconsin after his junior year of high school.
The Cardinals didn’t have the chance to play in a state championship, but the Kimberly win suffices for the Fond du Lac community after watching a memorable season and unforgettable team. “We know,” Allen said. “Now we know. This was definitely what we were looking to do. The way that we dominated this game, there’s no doubt in my mind that we would’ve been state champions this year.”
More significant for Steve was watching his son lead a team to such success in just his second season as head coach. He called Steven a better coach than he was. “He’s a very good football coach and I’m very proud of him,” Steve said. “I had some really nice seasons over the years and a few state championships and things like that, but nothing makes me more proud than seeing my son do such a good job. “I have another son (Matthew) that coached in the state championship last year at Bay Port for offensive line. Equally as proud of him. Two great young men.”
Steven thanked the team and the senior class for working through the pandemic and after the WIAA announced the state tournament was canceled last fall. He said Allen helped take the program to further heights. “I’ll never forget this team,” Steven said. “The uncertainty of what was going on with this pandemic. They just never stopped working. They’re very great young men. I love them all. It’s a very special group.”

WISPORTS.net WEEK 7 RUSHING LEADERS
What was a highly-competitive and entertaining de facto championship game turned into a route behind one of the most dominating rushing performances the state has ever seen. Fond du Lac pulled away from Kimberly in the third quarter for a 71-47 victory. Leading the way was quarterback Kyle Walljasper, who carried it just 16 times but went for 320 yards and five touchdowns. He added 82 passing yards and a touchdown as well. Running back Braelon Allen had a huge night as well with 12 carries for 270 yards and four touchdowns.

Ahead 35-28 to start the half, the Cardinals onside kick by Justin Scheberl and recovered by David McArthur proceeded to outscore the Papermakers 36-19 in the second half to pull away for the impressive victory at Pickett Field in a Fox Valley Classic Football Conference playoff finale. The recovery led to a 47-yard touchdown from Braelon Allen and gave Fondy momentum it would never lose.
“Seventy-one points? I didn’t expect 71 points and I’m a pretty confident guy,” Fond du Lac coach Steven Jorgensen said. “We had that awesome onside kick to start the second half and we put it all out there. I’m not taking credit for that. We have a muti-sport state champion in my headset with my father (Steve Jorgensen) and he said, ‘Hey, why don’t we try an onside?’ and I said, ‘Hey, let’s go for it.’ And coach (Nate) Wara, who does our special teams, we went for it and the kids executed it and it was beautiful.” Justin Scheberl stated : “it was my best onside kick “Ever” and what a better time than right now”

Braelon Allen and Kyle Walljasper combined for 581 yards rushing and nine touchdowns on the ground, with Walljasper also tossing a touchdown to Tyler Collien. Kyle Walljasper finished with 15 carries for 308 yards and scores of 55, 44, 5, 44 and 50 yards. Braelon Allen added 12 carries for 278 yards with touchdowns of 66, 33, 48 and 48 yards.
“Those are two of the best high school football players I think I’ve seen, especially on the same team,” Kimberly coach Steve Jones said. “They’re impressive and I know it’s not just those two. The offensive line did a great job for them. But those two kids can just take over a game and that’s what happened tonight. They just took over the game.”
Braelon Allen, a University of Wisconsin recruit, said the win against the Cardinals’ biggest rival made it that much more sweet. “This is huge. This is exactly what we wanted,” Allen said. “This was exactly our vision in how we saw us ending our season. It was great.”

Fond du Lac vs. Kimberly Football Game Moved to Appleton East
Friday night’s Fox Valley Classic Conference football championship game between Kimberly and Fond du Lac will be played at Pickett Field at Appleton East High School. The game will kick off at 7 p.m.
Both teams enter Friday’s game with 6-0 records. Fond du Lac won Group A and advanced with a 42-7 win over Appleton North last week. Kimberly won Group B and defeated Neenah 35-14 last week to reach the title game.
Fond du Lac earned the right to host the game by virtue of playing only three home games, compared to four for Kimberly. However, Fruth Field in Fond du Lac is unable to host the game. It had been previously announced that Kimberly would host Friday’s game until the neutral site at Appleton East was secured. All three of Fond du Lac’s previous home games were played at Kiel High School.

Fond du Lac, Kimberly prepare for championship battle
Go to link below for pregame interview with Fond du Lac Head Coach Steven Jorgensen
In a game that could’ve been the WIAA Division 1 state championship in the fall season, Fond du Lac and Kimberly will finally meet with a title on the line. The two traditional Fox Valley Association rivals clash in the final game of the Fox Valley Classic Conference season, a Group A/B championship pitting the two undefeated squads.
In this week’s edition of High School Sports Xtra, we run through extended highlights of both the Cardinals’ and Papermakers’ semifinal wins in the Group A/B pod, hear from both head coaches looking forward to the game, and take a look at the history of this growing rivalry.
Fond du Lac head coach Steven Jorgensen joins the show as his squad looks to finish off a perfect 7-0 season. In 2019, pre-playoff seedings sent the Cardinals south, so Fondy-Kimberly could’ve presumably been a state championship game matchup in Madison.
Local 5 Sports will have live coverage from Friday’s game at Appleton East High School. Tune in for previews at 6:00 and live postgame reaction, with highlights, at 10.
.
Fond du Lac-Kimberly showdown set.
It’s been one year and eight months since the two powerhouses faced off in their 2019 overtime classic. This matchup will be good, too. The two undefeated FVA programs have defeated their opponents a combined 570-110 through six games. Both teams handily beat one of the Fox Valley Classic’s best teams, Appleton North (4-2), Fond du Lac winning 42-7 on Friday night. Kimberly won 42-14 over Appleton North earlier this season and 35-14 over Neenah on Friday.
Fond du Lac is led by Wisconsin commit Braelon Allen, the state leader in touchdowns rushing (17), and quarterback Kyle Walljasper, who leads the state with 1,161 yards rushing and is second with 16 touchdowns rushing. Walljasper threw two touchdowns and rushed for 290 yards and three touchdowns on Friday. Allen had 139 yards of total offense, two touchdowns rushing, one sack, one forced fumble and 10 tackles.
Fond du Lac is more explosive, but Kimberly is paced by Northern Iowa commit Caleb Frazer, who’s coming off a three-touchdown performance against Neenah. Frazer scored the game-winning touchdown when Kimberly won 34-31 over Fond du Lac in 2019.
.
Week 6
Fond du Lac 42 Appleton North 7
Fond du Lac quarterback Kyle Walljasper ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more as Fondy improved to 6-0 with a win over the Lightning at Kiel High School. The Cardinals close the season against Kimberly next Friday

Kyle Walljasper finished with 286 yards rushing and three scores and passed for two scores.
Braelon Allen rushed for 119 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown.

Braelon Allen receives NFL award, Fond du Lac wins
He’s at least three years away from a possible NFL contract, but his name is already in the NFL archives.
Fond du Lac’s do-it-all talent Braelon Allen was named the NFL Way to Play High School Award recipient for Week 24 of the 2020-21 high school football season.
The Wisconsin Badgers commit was honored for demonstrating exceptional in-game playing technique, the press release said. Allen’s award earns Fond du Lac a $1,500 equipment grant through USA Football.
Fond du Lac won 63-3 over Green Bay Preble on Friday. Allen, a junior on the field, reclassified in 2020 so he can enroll one year early at Wisconsin this summer. He’s got the build to fit in at the Division I level at 17 years old.
“These tremendous young student-athletes who are recognized with the Way to Play Award clearly demonstrate proper form and technique that reduces unnecessary risk and improves the athlete’s quality of play,” Troy Vincent, NFL executive vice president of football operations, said.
