Fond du Lac Boys win D1 WIAA Sectional

BEAVER DAM – Apparently sending a large contingent of athletes to the WIAA state meet wasn’t enough for the Fond du Lac boys track and field team. The Cardinals also wanted a sectional plaque in tow when they make the trip to La Crosse next weekend.

Fond du Lac qualified for state in six individual events and two relays in winning Friday’s WIAA Division 1 sectional meet at Beaver Dam — finishing with 97 points as a team, easily besting Oshkosh West’s 75 points.

The top three finishers in each event qualify for state.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was senior Peter Andrew, who qualified for state in both the shot put and discus throw. Andrew won the shot put with a throw of 58-feet, 7-inches and finished second in the discus with a toss of 147-feet, 5-inches. Despite qualifying for state in two events, the UW-Milwaukee recruit was hard on himself. “My technique was a little bit off in discus and I didn’t throw as well as I wanted to in the shot,” Andrew said. “I started off warmups not very good, but then I started working more on my technique and then it finally clicked and started getting good for me.”

Finishing second in the shot put and also advancing to La Crosse was Andrew’s teammate, Jason Toshner. Toshner finished with a heave of 51-feet, 1-inch. With it being his first year trying out the shot put, Toshner was pretty happy with how his senior season is ending. “It was my first year really going out for shot and I worked on it hard,” he said. “I was able to get the technique down and able to throw it far.”

In the track events, senior Nick Park picked up a win in the 100-meter dash, finishing with a time of 11.36 seconds and edging Oshkosh West’s Connor Arneson by .03 seconds. “I was nervous going into it, but I’ve trained too hard to let this go,” Park said. “Our coaches have worked so hard with me and I wanted to prove that Fondy has something. It’s my first time (going to state) so I’m really excited and I can’t wait.”

Meanwhile, Brian Luteyn qualified for state with a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (15.43 seconds) and Kyle Marcoe was third in the 400-meter dash (50.61 seconds). After starting out relatively slowly in the 110 hurdles, Luteyn kicked it into high gear at the end of the race to secure his spot in La Crosse. “It was a close one,” Luteyn said. “Me and the guy to the left of me were close for the first seven hurdles and the last couple I just pulled it off in front of him.”

Marcoe, who’s in his first year in track, noted the hard work he put in to get to this moment. “You have to work hard every day. You can’t have a lazy day for any practices,” he said. “If you really want it, you have to do it. This is my first year, so it’s very tough. I started out lazy and then I decided I wanted it.”

In the final event of the night, Fond du Lac’s 4X400-meter relay team of Luke Curran, Luteyn, Marcoe and Trey Halfmann finished first with a time of 3:25.83, capping off a successful meet for the Cards and sealing the sectional title.

The 4X100-meter relay of Kyle Pierce, Quinn Woelfel, Park and Halfmann also finished third to advance to state.
