Fond du Lac boys track aims for FVA title

After finishing second behind Appleton North at last year’s Fox Valley Association meet, coach TJ Severson set two goals for his team this season: a conference title and “to take as many kids to La Crosse for the state meet as possible.”

The Cardinals’ season has just begun, but they already made their presence known with a first-place finish at the UW-Stevens Point invite and a second-place finish at the UW-Oshkosh invite.

“A big reason for the success so far this season is because of our returners from last year’s team, which won regional and sectional titles,” coach Severson said.

Three of those returners were state qualifiers in 2015. Juniors Trey Halfmann and Kyle Marcoe qualified as members of the 4X400-meter relay team, while Marcoe also qualified in the 400-meter dash. Nick Park, a senior, returns after qualifying for state in the 100-meter dash.

Other returners include Eddie Negron (jumps and sprints), Noah Tagliapetra (distance), Nate Diederich (pole vault), Jimmy Diener (jumps), Quinn Woelfel (relays), Levi Burns (relays and sprints), Devon Krzanowski (throws), and Justin Maratik (hurdles).

Severson also expects freshman Andrew Stone, a thrower, and Alex Balthazor, a sprinter and relay runner, to make an impact for the Cardinals, who lost four key athletes in Brian Luteyn, Kyle Pierce, Austin McCroy and Peter Andrew.

Conference championship hopes aside, Severson’s emphasis is on experience and improvement for his athletes. “We expect to compete no matter who is entered in the event at any given meet,” he said, “Our kids work extremely hard every day to get better. Our goal is to have our kids improve daily and be the best athlete they can be when all is said and done.”
