Fond du Lac joined the FVA in 1989-90 in all sports except football and then began playing football in the fall of 1993.

The Fox River Valley Conference, or FRVC, was a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) affiliated high school athletic conference in northeastern Wisconsin. Formed in 1923, it was in existence until the conclusion of the 2007 spring sport season. Afterwards, the conference and its eight members joined with four schools from the Bay Conference to form the Fox River Classic Conference.

Fox River Valley Conference history

1923-1970[edit]

The Fox River Valley Conference was established in 1923 by charter members AppletonFond du LacGreen Bay EastGreen Bay WestManitowocOshkosh, and Sheboygan.[1][2] A year later in 1924, Marinette would join the conference and remain as its eighth member until 1936.[3] In 1938 Sheboygan renamed itself Sheboygan Central due to the upcoming 1939 opening of Sheboygan North. North joined the FRVC that year, bringing its membership back to eight. A minor change occurred in 1960 when Sheboygan Central (and its team name and records) changed its name to Sheboygan South due to the shift of population further from the center of Sheboygan. In 1964, Green Bay Southwest joined the conference followed by Green Bay Preble a year later, the latter having left the now-defunct NEW Conference after 1963.[4] This brought the FRVC membership up to 10 schools. Four years later in 1967, Appleton East incorporated and joined the conference, prompting Appleton to change its name to Appleton West. Nearby Neenah High School opened in 1968, and joined the conference that year, leading the FRVC to peak at 12 member schools.

1970-2006

A major conference realignment happened in 1970 when Appleton East, Appleton West, Oshkosh, and Neenah left the conference to join up with KaukaunaKimberly, and Menasha, forming the Fox Valley Association.[5][6] With the loss of four teams, the FRVC brought in Two Rivers, who would leave four years later in 1973 to join the FVA.[5] The conference’s schools remained the same until the 1989-1990 school year, when Fond du Lac left the conference to join the Fox Valley Association for all sports except football, not leaving in full until the fall of 1993.[5] The newly-merged Notre Dame Academy made up of Green Bay’s Catholic

high school population replaced them, keeping membership at eight.[7] The FRVC ended at the conclusion of the 2006-07 school year, when the remaining schools joined AshwaubenonBay PortDe Pere, and Pulaski to form the current Fox River Classic Conference.[8] Of the original seven charter members, the only ones that remained were Green Bay East, Green Bay West, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan (now Sheboygan South).

FVA History

Fox Valley Association 50 Years – 1970-2020

The Fox Valley Association began in 1970 with eight charter members. Appleton East, Appleton West, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Menasha, Neenah, Oshkosh North and Oshkosh West comprised the original membership. Two Rivers was added in 1977-78 and spent two years as a league member before the conference reverted back to an eight-team league. Fond du Lac joined the conference in 1989-90 in all sports except football and then began playing football in the fall of 1993. The conference sat at nine teams for two years before Appleton North opened its doors in 1995-96 and gave the conference 10 teams. In 2014-15, Menasha left the conference and was replaced by Hortonville, keeping the conference as a 10-team league.

Football underwent a major change prior to the 2010-11 school year when the Fox Valley Association merged with the Wisconsin Valley Conference to form the Valley Football Association. The conference was divided into eight-team North and South divisions until 2017-18 when Wausau East departed, leaving the league with 15 teams that are now divided into three five-team divisions. Appleton East, Appleton North, Appleton West, Kaukauna and Kimberly comprise one division, while Fond du Lac, Hortonville, Neenah, Oshkosh North and Oshkosh West make up another division. The five remaining former Wisconsin Valley Conference schools (D.C. Everest, Marshfield, Stevens Point, Wausau West and Wisconsin Rapids) are in another division and play crossover games with the FVA schools.

Entering its 50th season in 2019-20, Fox Valley Association schools have combined to win 111 state titles in 18 different sports since the conference began. FVA schools won a record seven state championships in 2016-17. The conference has won at least one state title in 44 of its 49 seasons. Overall, the 10 current members of the conference have combined to win 149 state championships.
