MADISON – The WIAA state wrestling meet began at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Kohl Center, and a team of USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin reporters are at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to chronicle the action.

Division 1 wrestlers began at 3 p.m. followed by Division 2 and 3 wrestlers at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Fond du Lac heavyweight Donte Johnson moved into the semiffinals with a pair of wins on Thursday at the WIAA Division 1 State Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Johnson (37-2), the No. 2 ranked heevayweight, pinned Connor McNeal 37 seconds into the second period in his opening-round match and then stopped Ashwaubenon’s Daniel Cole by a 5-1 margin in the quarterfinals.

Johnson will face a huge test in the seminfinals where he will face Pewaukee’s Blaze Beltran. Beltran (50-1) is the defending state champion and top-ranked heavyweight entering the state tournament. He scored decision wins over Noah Bolling of Merrill (5-4) and Jorin McGuire of Muskego (5-3) to reach the quarterfinals.

The semifinals are slated for 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Cardinals’ Colton Wasieleski was knocked out of the tournament following a 9-2 loss to Waterford’s Jack Trautmann III in the opening round.
