Fond du Lac hangs tough, but falls to Waupaca
For two whole periods, the Fond du Lac co-op girls hockey team hung with one of the best teams in the state. Unfortunately for the Warbirds, there were moments in the first period where that wasn’t the case. Against a powerful squad like the Waupaca co-op, that can make all the difference.
Waupaca scored three goals in the first period as it staved off a strong effort from Fond du Lac to defeat the Warbirds 4-1 in nonconference action Saturday afternoon at Blue Line Family Ice Center. “We knew they were going to be a good team,” Fond du Lac coach Duane Woeshnick said of Waupaca. “Obviously they have a couple of very talented players. Their top line is very good and they’re well-coached. … We knew they would come out with a lot of firepower and our girls were kind of shell-shocked a little bit in the first period. I thought we responded very nicely in the second and third period.”
Waupaca (11-1), ranked No. 10 in the lastest Wisconsin Prep Hockey poll, came out hot — scoring just 3:51 into the contest on a goal by freshman sensation Markie Ash. Three minutes later, Mandy Tomlinson added a goal and then Ash scored her second of the game, and 27th of the season, with just under a minute left in the period. Tomlinson assisted on Ash’s first goal, while Brianne Huettner had the assist on Tomlinson’s score.
Trailing 3-0 after the first, Fond du Lac (3-4) was on the brink of getting blown out. But the Warbirds didn’t give in, playing solid hockey for the final 34 minutes of the contest and keeping the Comets from turning it into a rout. After a scoreless second period, the Warbirds got on the board 41 seconds into the third on a goal from Kaylee Miller, assisted by Laura Tymm. However, Fond du Lac wasn’t able to generate much offense after that. Tomlinson scored her second goal of the game, an empty-netter, with 19 seconds left to give the Comets a 4-1 lead.
Following a rough start, Fond du Lac goalie Rebecca Binder turned in a solid game overall, recording 32 saves, as she helped limit one of the state’s top scoring duos in Ash and Tomlinson, who now have a combined 83 points on the season. “Overall she played very well,” Woeshnick said of Binder. “She didn’t get a lot of help in the first period. She made a couple great saves. There were players wide open, they crashed the net very hard and we were unable to pick up the rebounds.”
Offensively, the Warbirds did have a number of opportunities to trim into the deficit in the latter half of the game, but were unable to finish — something that’s been a recurring problem for Fond du Lac this year. Waupaca’s Cassie Rasmussen had 19 saves. “That’s been the story of the whole season,” Woeshnick said. “We’re just not able to get goals when we need them. We get a lot of scoring chances, we get a lot of opportunities to put the puck in the net. For whatever reason, it’s just not going in. But I liked our girls’ effort in the second and third period. We came out and played hard.”

Girls Hockey preview
With seven of the top 10 scorers back in the fold, including a pair of all-conference players, Fond du Lac co-op girls hockey team head coach Duane Woeshnick has reason to be excited about this year’s squad. But he knows the big key for his team won’t be how many goals it scores, but rather how few it can allow.
The Warbirds have to replace a pair of talented senior goalkeepers from last year’s squad in Taryn Immel and Jade Van Buren. Sophomores Rebecca Binder and Ashley Schmitt will be sharing netminder duties this season and how well they adjust to the varsity level will likely determine the extent of the team’s success. “The question is going to be our sophomore goaltending,” Woeshnick said. “Hopefully we can provide some scoring for them.”
Early indications are that the Warbrids are going to be fine in net with Binder and Schmitt, who split time on the varsity reserve team last year. Binder allowed just two goals in two games — both wins — at the season-opening tournament last weekend, while Schmitt held her own with 23 saves in a loss to state-ranked Northland Pines. “The nice thing about having two solid goalies is that it creates competition for both practices and games,” Woeshnick said. “Goaltending is valuable position if they can keep us in a game and we can score some goals, it goes a long way for confidence.”
Among the skaters returning for the Warbirds is leading scorer Breckin Overbo, a senior who scored 19 goals for the Warbirds last season. Juniors Miranda Zipp and Kendalyn Acheson were also among the leading scorers with nine and five goals, respectively, and return to the forward positions. On the blue line, senior Maddy Zipp leads a trio of returning players after leading the team in assists last season while also chipping in five goals. Senior Kaylee Miller and sophomore Kylee Dyni will also be back, while sophomore Maddy Ott, a newcomer to the squad, is expected to round out the Warbirds’ top four defensemen. “We do return some scoring and it showed last weekend. We were able to score some nice goals,” Woeshnick said. “Our depth is very good. We are definitely deep at the forward position and this creates good competition in games as well practice. “If we can continue to build on offense, get more shots on net create more scoring chances, we’ll be fine.” That won’t necessarily be easy in the Eastern Shores Conference, which features powers University School, Appleton United and the Bay Area Ice Bears.
The Warbirds are coming off a 10-12-1 season, however, that record came after an 0-8 start. The squad won 10 of its final 16 games and Woeshnick believes it can make some waves in the league this season. “It’s a team that I think can upset teams and make a good run toward the postseason,” Woeshnick said. “Our conference is very strong but the way we played this weekend, the girls seem really confident this year.”
