The WIAA Board of Control approved today a plan that pushes back the start dates of all its fall sports except boys and girls cross country as well as provides spring opportunities for schools that decide to not field teams this fall. The changes were the WIAA’s latest response to the coronavirus pandemic, which caused the organization to prematurely end its winter season and cancel its spring season.

The plan calls for an Aug. 17 start date for the low-risk sports, girls golf, girls swimming, boys and girls cross country and girls tennis. That is six or seven days later than the usual first day of practice for golf, tennis and swimming and the regularly scheduled start date for cross country.

Sports considered as high risk – football, boys soccer and boys and girls volleyball – will begin Sept. 7. That is more than a month later than the original start day for football (Aug. 4) and three weeks later than for soccer and volleyball.

The plan also provides schools that decide against playing a sport in the fall the opportunity to have that season in the spring.
