Fond du Lac boys and girls win sectional titles

WEST BEND – It’s been a highly successful spring for both the Fond du Lac boys and girls track and field teams. Battling through poor weather and stiff competition, the Cardinals have typically finished at or near the top of many of their meets throughout the season. It all culminated Thursday evening.

The Fond du Lac boys scored 151 points as a unit and the girls came in with 91.5 points as they each finished first at a WIAA Division 1 sectional track and field meet hosted by West Bend West.

Plymouth came in second in the boys meet with 79 points, while Hartford Union was second with 88 points on the girls side.

The boys had a number of individual first-place finishes on Thursday.

Kyle Marcoe won the 400-meter dash (49.55 seconds), the 4X100-meter relay team of Levi Burns, Quinn Woelfel, Joe Kuber and Nick Park (43.43) took first and the 4X400-meter relay of Trey Halfmann, Kuber, Luke Curran and Marcoe (3:22.93) also won.

It was a big day for Marcoe, who edged his teammate Halfmann in the 400 and was the anchor on the 4X400.

“It felt good last year, but it feels great to (go to state) two years in a row,” Marcoe said. “I’ve only been in track for two years and I think that’s the best achievement.”

To advance to state in Division 1, athletes must finish in the top three of each event.

Other state qualifiers for the Fond du Lac boys included: Park (100-meter dash), Noah Tagliapietra (1,600-meter run, 3,200-meter run), the 4X200-meter relay (Burns, Woelfel, Curran, Park), Halfmann (400-meter dash, triple jump), Matt Laska (300-meter hurdles), Alex Balthazor (200-meter dash), Andrew Stone (shot put, discus throw), Donte Johnson (shot put) and Devon Krzanowski (discus throw).

With temperatures in the mid-80s, Thursday’s meet was much warmer than what the Cardinals have been dealing with for much of the season. Tagliapietra, a distance runner, specifically mentioned its impact on him.

“(The heat) really did play a role,” he said. “My goal (in the 1,600) was to go out a little harder in the first 800 (meters) than I did. … I had to work a little harder on the back end than I had wanted.”

Stone, just a freshman, advanced to state in both the shot put and discus and was pretty excited about getting the chance to compete in La Crosse next weekend.

“I’m a freshman and I’m trying to get better every day,” Stone said. “I got second in both shot and disc, so it feels great.”

Meanwhile, the 4X800-meter relay team of Ally Gietzel, Madison Hughes, Liz Ziegler and Annie Moore (9:46.05) placed first for the Cardinal girls.

Moore, the lone senior on the relay, was happy to get the chance to end her decorated career at state.

“It’s really exciting, just because I get to go with another great group of girls,” Moore said. “We’ve all worked so hard together.”

Hughes and Ziegler are both freshmen, so it was an even more exciting moment for them.

“It’s been a pleasure running with these girls and getting to know them,” Hughes said. “I’ve made two great friends, since I already knew Liz (Ziegler). It’s a really a crazy and fun experience.”

Added Ziegler: “It’s just a really great experience to be able to go to state as a freshman. It’s just so much fun to be around them.”

Other state qualifiers for the Fondy girls included: Katie Retzlaff (100-meter hurdles), Moore (800-meter run, 1,600-meter run), Brooke McDowell (300-meter hurdles), Ziegler (3,200-meter run), the 4X400-meter relay (Amber Wells, Kiya Petik, Nicole Lord, Gietzel) and Gietzel (long jump).

McDowell, a freshman, was pretty surprised to find herself on the podium.

“I didn’t expect to make it to state this year because it was my first time trying the 300-meter hurdles,” she said. “It was a really nice day and we haven’t had many nice meets.”

Retzlaff was simply relieved she locked up her spot in La Crosse.

“I’m really, really relieved and happy,” Retzlaff said. “All the hard work paid off this season.”
