Fondy’s Jason Toshner looks to take next step
Most high school wrestlers would be thrilled to make it to the state tournament. Making it to state just once would be quite the accomplishment for any wrestler, but for Fond du Lac’s Jason Toshner, making it to the big stage this year wouldn’t be enough.
Toshner made it to the WIAA State Tournament the last two years as an individual, both first round exits. But that was in the past. Toshner believes he is a new person. “It was tough, last year I almost had it,” Toshner said after losing a close 6-5 decision last year in the opening round. “I should have caught him at the end but I made some stupid mistakes. I was younger but now this year, I am a new person.” The way the year is going for the 195-pound senior, Toshner looks as if he’s ready for that next step.
Toshner entered state with a 29-9 record as a sophomore and 37-7 as a junior. This year, he has only two losses — 31-2 — and is currently ranked No. 2 at 195-pounds in D1. The reason for his success? Simple. Hard work.
“Physically you can see he works hard, he spends a lot of time in the weight room training,” Fondy wrestling coach Joe Rens said. “Just his constant work ethic, he’s motivated … he’s just a kid you want to build your group around.”
Toshner’s two losses haven’t come by no slouch, either. His first loss came in the Marty Loy Invitational — held at Fond du Lac HS on Dec. 20 — to Mason Stokke of Menomonie, a 4-1 decision. Stokke is currently ranked No. 1 in D1.
Then his second loss came ten days later in the On The Water Classic, the 64-team tournament held in Oshkosh every year at the end of December. Feeling a bit under the weather that day, Toshner lost the first-place match on an 8-4 decision to August Peplinski of Wittenberg-Birnamwood. Peplinski is currently ranked No. 1 in Division 2.
Having that No. 2 ranking in front of his name doesn’t intimidate Toshner, but knows he can’t take it for granted, either. “It’s pretty cool,” Toshner said of the high ranking. “But there are high expectations, so I just have to keep winning. There can’t be any upsets.”
If he makes it back to state, Toshner hopes to finish in the top six. But Rens knows he’s capable of winning a state title. “I think with his experience down there he realizes it’s going to be just another match,” Rens said. “It’s a big venue, but same sized mat. Same shoes, but same mat in a bigger venue. I am confident that he could win a state title.”
Toshner started wrestling since he was in Kindergarten and started to compete in traveling teams as early as second grade. He can thank his parents for that. “My parents just put me in it, they wanted to get rid of me after school,” Toshner said with a laugh.
A 4.0 student in the classroom, Toshner not only made an impact on the mat. In the fall, Toshner helped rejuvenate the football program after the Cardinals capped the 2014 year off with a 10-2 record, making it to the WIAA Level 3 Playoffs before getting knocked off by state champ Kimberly. Toshner earned second-team all-Valley Football Association South as a linebacker. He had 43 tackles, one sack and had a forced fumble for a defense that only allowed just over 15 points per game. He also made honorable mention in 2013 as a punter and made second-team as a linebacker in his sophomore season. “Coming from a 1-8 season as a freshman, our varsity team wasn’t the greatest,” Toshner said. “But after the new coaches came in we grew more as a team. We bonded more and overall we were closer. We performed better.” His favorite high school memory comes from football when he picked off a pitch for a touchdown in Fondy’s Homecoming game his junior year. The senior also participates in track and field in the spring, competing in pole vault.
Toshner hopes he can play football at the next level and has made contact with a lot of the state schools, along with a few private. “Don’t know where I’m going yet, but (I’d like to play) football,” Toshner said.

Fondy’s Josh Adams is off to fast start
Fond du Lac junior wrestler Josh Adams is on a mission this season. After finishing third at sectionals in both his freshman and sophomore years — having to finish in the top two to advance to the WIAA Individual State Tournament — Adams is showing the state that he is ready this season to make it to state.
Adams, ranked No. 4 at 145-pounds, is off to an 18-1 start this season and is coming off a first-place finish in the On The Water Classic last week — a two-day tournament that is one of the biggest holiday tournaments in the state that takes place in Oshkosh.
Action Reporter Media caught up with Adams before practice on Monday to talk about the season.
The Reporter: You are coming off a first-place finish in Oshkosh last week, a tournament that featured over 60 teams. How did the tourney go for you?
Josh Adams: It went pretty good. I thought it was going to be a big tournament for me coming into it, I figured I had a good shot of winning it. I looked online the week before, I saw the chances were high and everything ended up going in my favor.
TR: You mentioned before that you were seeded fifth in your bracket, despite being ranked No. 4 in the state. Did that add some extra fire to finish higher?
JA: That added some motivation for me trying to win the bracket, I wanted to prove these guys wrong. I wanted to beat all of my competition and get ranked higher.
TR: You won the championship match in overtime, 4-2. Talk about that match for me.
JA: I knew I could beat him on my feet. It was a match where I knew he could beat me on the mat but I could beat him on the feet so in the third period he was riding me up and I was just trying to get it into overtime.
TR: What makes that tournament so special?
JA: Just the amount of people there, just the amount because everyone could see it, everyone could witness it. Now I’m starting to get heard and people are recognizing for who I am.
TR: You are 18-1 this season, so how would you say the year is going for you?
JA: It’s going great. It’s going a lot better than I expected. Everything is playing out perfect so far.
TR: You moved up to 145-pounds after competing at 126 the last two years. Did you work hard this offseason to get there?
JA: I worked really hard, I started to hit the weights more and the results are showing.
TR: Goals for the rest of the season? Can you see making it to state, especially after coming up just short the last two seasons?
JA: Get to state and then place there in the top three, if not first. Especially (falling) in OT last year (at sectionals), it’s been a struggle.
Josh Adams claims 145 lb. title, Jason Toshner finish second @ 195 lb.
OSHKOSH – Fond du Lac’s Josh Adams is ranked No. 4 in Division 1, so when he found out that he was wrestling as the fifth seed in the On The Water Classic, he wasn’t too happy about it. “It was very disappointing (getting the fifth seed) but I knew I could come in here and prove everybody wrong,” Adams said. He did just that, going 6-0 in the two-day tournament — that featured 64 teams — as he captured the 145-pound title. Adams had three pins in the tournament and won the championship match 4-2 in overtime over Mishicot’s Weston Cracraft.
“I had a couple of tough matches, one really tough match coming in (to the championship match) otherwise the rest were pins,” Adams said of the tournament. “I saw on the winning side before we got to the semis that the No. 1 fell and when the No. 2 seed feel I knew things were falling into place for me to win this thing.” Adams said once the two went into overtime, he knew who ever would be the more aggressive one would come out on top.
“That kid was brutal on top, I knew I could kill him on his feet and then hold him down for a while, but jeez he was an animal on top,” Adams said of Cracraft. “I took him down (earlier in the match) so I knew if I took a shot I’d get him but if he took a shot he’d probably get me so it was a matter of who was going to be more aggressive and more risky, and sometimes that helps.”
Adams’ teammate Jason Toshner had a good showing as well, as the senior finished runner-up at 195-pounds. Toshner lost the first-place match on an 8-4 decision against Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s August Peplinski. Toshner went 5-1 in the tournament, despite being sick. “Going into the second day I was a little bummed and just had to wrestle as hard as I could and unfortunately I couldn’t get out with the win,” Toshner said. “For me being sick the past week I didn’t have the strength to get some of my moves, but it shouldn’t come down to strength, it should be more technique. “Knowing that I wasn’t at full strength I know that I can compete with the best of the best and I’ll be right there at the top.”
At 182-pounds, Cardinals’ William Boyrington finished eighth overall. He lost the 7th place match and finished 1-2 on Tuesday and 4-3 overall. Donte Johnson added a 10th place finish in the heavyweight bracket for the Cardinals.
3 Cardinals advance in On The Water Classic tournament
On The Water Classic: Five area wrestlers advanced to the second day of the 64-team tournament on Monday in Oshkosh.
Fondy’s Josh Adams (145-pounds), William Boyrington (182) and Jason Toshner (195) advanced for the Cardinals
Adams finished the day with a 4-0 record, recording two pins on the day after receiving an opening round bye. Toshner was also 4-0 while Boyrington went 3-1, losing his last match.
On The Water Classic takes wrestlers out of routine
OSHKOSH – During the school year, wrestlers have their normal routine — a dual on a Tuesday or Thursday along with a Saturday morning invitational. Teams have a set practice schedule and those kids know how to prepare for those types of matches. But now that all schools are on Holiday break, it can throw a wrench in that preparation. Especially if a tournament landed on a Monday — just days after the holiday weekend.
Over 60 schools from every division took part in one of the biggest tournaments of the year in the On The Water Classic in Oshkosh on Monday, so getting ready for the two-day tournament was quite different than what teams were used to. Fond du Lac, Laconia, North Fond du Lac/St. Mary’s Springs and Oakfield all participated in the two-day event.
“The Christmas tournaments are always tough because it’s over the break and sometimes, especially with the younger kids, they are on break mode so it’s tough to get their wrestling mindset right,” Fondy coach Joe Rens said. Most of the teams had the same practices as they normally do this last week besides Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, while throwing an extra practice on Saturday and Sunday. So in that case, things weren’t different. While changing up the practice schedule this past weekend to gear up for the tournament wasn’t a big deal to the wrestlers, one thing that was difficult for some was the mental preparation of not gaining weight over the holiday break.
For Fond du Lac, a lot of the guys were underweight so over eating wasn’t necessarily a problem. “For our team, we have a lot of guys who are under weight and we have the two-pound allowance so no one really had to cut off weight after break,” Fondy senior Jason Toshner said. Add his coach: “The kids managed their weight real well. We don’t have anybody that is watching their weight too much. You will get some guys on different teams that will have issues with it but we are doing a nice job with that.” Having to prepare for a two-day tournament starting on a Monday after break, while facing a high level of competition like this tournament is a good measuring stick for teams and individuals. “The fact that there are so many teams, you see Division 1, 2 and 3 schools,” Rens said. “A lot of times kids come in from Division 1 and think that the Division 2 and 3 teams won’t be so tough but they are finding out that they are and the D2 and D3 kids think the same about D1. They are seeing that it doesn’t matter where you’re from, at the end of the day you have to bring your ‘A’ game.
“In those 64 teams there are some good ones but some are still building up. This is a good measuring stick. If you can finish in the top 10, I think you’re gearing up for a good postseason run.” Either way, it’s still a tournament that these kids look forward to every year.
Adams, Toshner 2nd at Marty Loy
Marty Loy Classic: Fond du Lac’s Josh Adams and Jason Toshner both finished second individually at Saturday’s Marty Loy Classic, hosted by Fond du Lac.
At 145 pounds, Adams went 3-1 on the day, pinning his first three opponents before losing to Sauk Prairie’s Eddie Smith in the first-place match by 10-2 major decision. Toshner (195) also went 3-1 on Saturday, earning a pin and two decision victories before falling to Mason Stokke of Menomonie by 4-1 decision in the first-place match.
“They wrestled their butts off, they just ran into hammers in the finals,” Fond du Lac coach Joe Rens said of Adams and Toshner.
Donte Johnson (285) finished sixth, going 3-2 with a pin and two decision victories. William Boyrington (182) and Colton Wasieleski (220) were both eighth.
Fond du Lac was 15th as a unit at the 25-team tournament, scoring 81 points. Hudson won with a total of 197 points.

Fond du Lac 2nd at Wisconsin Dells Invitational
The Fond du Lac wrestling team finished in second place on Saturday at the 2014 Dells Duals Classic in Wisconsin Dells.
The Cardinals were second in Pool E, coming in behind Melrose-Mindoro/G-E-T. Fond du Lac defeated St. Croix Falls 45-24, Iowa-Grant/Highland 39-33, Somerset 52-24 and Adams-Friendship 48-27, while losing to Melrose-Mindoro/G-E-T 45-30.
Josh Adams had a tremendous day for Fond du Lac at 152 pounds, recording four pinfall victories along with a forfeit. Donte Johnson also picked up five wins at 285 pounds as did Jason Toshner at 195.
Fond du Lac falls short against Oshkosh North
OSHKOSH – Fond du Lac’s wrestling team started out strong and looked good at the finish. In between, though, it was a pretty tough run.
The Cardinals posted just one win over a 10-match stretch and dropped a 46-23 decision to Oshkosh North in a Fox Valley Association dual meet on Thursday night.
The strong start for Fond du Lac was provided by its two heaviest wrestlers as Colton Wasieleski posted a 19-1 technical fall victory at 220 pounds before heavyweight Donte Johnson pinned the Spartans’ Bernard Smith in 3:29.
The Cardinals didn’t get another victory until 145 pounds when Josh Adams pinned Logan McConnell in 3:22 to trim North’s lead to 28-17.
The Spartans answered with three straight pins to seal the victory before William Boyrington (182) and Jason Toshner (195) capped the dual meet with decision wins for the Cardinals.
Starting weight: 220 pounds.

Fond du Lac falls to Oshkosh West in FVA dual
When the Fond du Lac wrestling team was actually competing Thursday night, the Cardinals looked pretty good. The problem was that didn’t happen nearly enough.
Fond du Lac forfeited four matches in the lower weight classes, but still hung tough with Oshkosh West, falling 40-30 in a Fox Valley Association dual meet at Fond du Lac.
“Finding the little guys are tough,” Fond du Lac coach Joe Rens said. “In the past, we had a hard time finding big guys. I think we’ll get a couple guys in there, but we’re pretty solid.”
The night couldn’t have started out any better for the Cardinals. Fond du Lac senior William Boyrington kicked off the dual with a pinfall victory at 182 pounds, pinning Oshkosh West’s Edson Salazar 2:48 into his match.
State qualifier Jason Toshner then followed with a pinfall victory at 195 pounds, ending his match with Aric Lippold just 36 seconds in.
Colton Wasieleski dropped a tight 8-6 decision in overtime at 220 pounds.
Donte Johnson came back with a pinfall win at 285. Johnson pinned Zach Collins with 0.2 seconds left in the second period of his match.
Leading 18-3 only four matches in, the Cardinals saw that advantage wiped away in minutes.
The Cardinals forfeited at 106 pounds
Fond du Lac’s Cameron Casetta at 113 picked up an 11-7 decision victory
Then forfeited at 120, 126 and 132. Oshkosh West’s Senna Sieber followed with a pinfall victory over Tyrik Viebranz at 138 pounds.
Josh Adams did give Fond du Lac a bit of life with a pinfall victory just 28 seconds into his 145-pound match with Jesus Heredia, but Oshkosh West’s Josh Bartelt won a 10-2 major decision at 152.
Fond du Lac’s Dakota Maas won an 8-3 decision at 160, but that ensured the Wildcats would take the dual as they held a seven-point lead entering the final match. West’s Grady Sullivan won a 6-0 decision over Bladimir Aviles at 170 pounds to close out the night.
While the night ended in a loss, there were certainly bright spots for Fond du Lac, which gave West 24 points via forfeit. Toshner and Adams looked especially dominant in their pinfall victories on Thursday. “They not only worked hard tonight and during our season, but they’re working hard all year long,” Rens said of Toshner and Adams. “They’re either playing football or busting their tail in the weight room. Josh wrestles a lot in the offseason. He lives and dies wrestling. Jason on the other hand is a three-sport athlete and you can see he’s a strong kid. Great attitude. They’re our team leaders and the kids feed off that. They want to be Josh Adams or they want to be Jason Toshner.”
The loss drops Fond du Lac to 0-2 on the young season, but Rens isn’t too concerned with that right now as his team is young and still looking to fill out some weight classes. He’s just looking for improvement as the year goes along. “We’ve just got to put it all together,” he said. “We don’t get too wrapped up right now because it’s early. … We’ve got some athletes on our team so hopefully we can put it together come February.”

The Fond du Lac wrestling team is coming off a fifth place finish in the Fox Valley Association, but led by Jason Toshner, the Cardinals return a solid group of kids so head coach Joe Rens would like to improve on that finish.
Toshner leads all returners after making it to the state tournament last season. Along with Toshner, Rens said the team’s top returners are Colin Athanasiou, Josh Adams (second-team all-FVA last year) and Donte Johnson.
“Jason brings good leadership, good work ethic and he brings a presence to the room,” Rens said of Toshner, who earned second-team all-conference a season ago. “He is very athletic and he continues to work to better his accomplishments.”
With the top returners, Rens said that Fondy has 11 promising freshman mixed in with some sophomores and juniors that have experience. Rens said he hopes to place in the top four in the FVA this year and would like to see three or four more wrestlers qualify for the state tournament.
