Pankratz, Stoffel-Murray lead Fondy at home invite

For most of the 2014-15 season, the Fond du Lac boys swimming & diving team has relied on senior Riley Pankratz and freshman Ben Stoffel-Murray when it comes to scoring points at dual meets and invites. Saturday afternoon’s Fondy Memorial Invitational was no different.

Pankratz and Stoffel-Murray scored highly in a number of events as the Cardinals finished seventh as a team at their annual home invite at Fond du Lac Community Aquatic Center. “They both placed pretty highly. It was hard even to score a point here, much less get in the top six,” Fond du Lac coach Glen McBride said of Pankratz and Stoffel-Murray. “For both of them to get up there on the medal stand is pretty good.”

Pankratz had the highest individual finish of the day for Fond du Lac, taking fourth place in the 50-yard freestyle race with a time of 23.06 seconds — 0.32 seconds away from first-place finisher Luke Hetue of Sun Prairie. He also finished seventh in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.69 seconds, one spot away from the podium. “I thought we did really good today for where we’re at in the season,” Pankratz said. “We’re getting right up towards our big meets of the season with conference and sectionals. Where we’re at right now, we’re doing pretty good. Not the best times per se, but we’re definitely in the right spot.”

Stoffel-Murray’s highest finish came in the 500-yard freestyle race, where he placed fifth with a time of 5:19.00. Nicholas Potter of DeForest was first with a time of 4:46.75. Stoffel-Murray also took ninth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:15.29. “I did pretty good. In the medley relay, I dropped seconds and pretty much the rest I was on with my times,” Stoffel-Murray said. “It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the best.”

As a team, Fond du Lac finished with 131 points to end up seventh out of 15 squads. Monona Grove won the invite with a staggering 557 points — over 200 points better than second-place finisher Sun Prairie. Waunakee was third, Racine Case took fourth and Waukesha North/Kettle Moraine/Pewaukee finished fifth.

Baraboo took sixth, edging Fond du Lac by just seven points. “I’d say I’m happy to finish that high,” McBride said. “To beat Bay Port, it’s been a long time since we beat Bay Port and Hartford. We were really close with Baraboo. We knew that Monona Grove was a really good team. They’re ranked No. 1 in Division 2 right now. We knew they’d be out there. … We had a pretty well-balanced lineup today. We scored in a bunch of different events. That really worked out well.”

Apart from Pankratz and Stoffel-Murray individually, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Ben Kimball, Stoffel-Murray, Cannon Lock and Pankratz finished seventh with a time of 3:39.91. The 200-yard medley relay team of Pankratz, Lock, Kimball and Andrew Lepien took eighth (1:49.43). Chase Ciske was ninth in the diving competition with a finals score of 256.15. Kimball took 13th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.46) and was 15th in the 50-yard freestyle (24.32). Lock was 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.47) and 22nd in the 100-yard freestyle (57.03). Brett Flood finished 18th in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.66) and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lepien, Abe Stoffel-Murray, Jacob Swanson and Matt Ryan was 13th (1:45.97).

“I feel we’re doing pretty good,” Pankratz said. “Everybody had really good swims today, a lot of people had best times. That was good to see. Everybody’s pushing each other, we’re all getting along well. As far as where we’re sitting, I feel like we always have room for improvement, but for where we’re at in the season, I feel we can go a little bit further yet. But so far, so good.”

Swimming & Diving Preview

It’s not easy for any team to lose a three-time state qualifier. Yet that’s exactly what the Fond du Lac boys swimming team will be attempting to overcome this season. With the graduation of Cameron Van Beek, who went to state every year since his sophomore season, the Cardinals will be without the services of one of the better swimmers in program history. Van Beek qualified for state in both the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle as a senior. “With placement and all that stuff, he’s going to be very hard to replace,” Fond du Lac coach Glen McBride said. “Also, he’s been our leader for the last few years by his work ethic and he came ready to go every day. That’s really tough to replace.”

That said, Fond du Lac does return a state qualifier in senior Riley Pankratz, who qualified for the 100-yard backstroke last season. McBride has already seen Pankratz step in as one of the leaders of this year’s team just a couple of weeks into the season. “One guy that’s stepped up his leadership role is Riley Pankratz,” McBride said. “He’s looking really strong in practice as far as speed and everything. He’s been a real good leader, getting the guys to do the right thing in practice and that kind of thing.” McBride fully expects Pankratz to make another run at the state meet and thinks he should be even a better swimmer than he was a season ago. “Just what I’ve seen in practice so far, I’d be surprised if he’s not quite a bit stronger than last year,” McBride said of Pankratz. “He’s been swimming well in the offseason. He’s had some off-and-on issues with his shoulder and arms where he hasn’t been able to train. Last year he was able to train a lot better. This year he’s looked good. Last year he made state in the backstroke and this year, I think he’ll push for a sprint freestyle spot as well, 50 or maybe the 100 free.” Pankratz is already out to an excellent start to the season, winning four events in Fond du Lac’s season-opening meet at Kiel last Tuesday. Pankratz won the 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and was a part of the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.

Apart from Pankratz, McBride mentioned a few other swimmers who he thought could make an impact for the team this year. Senior Ben Kimball was one McBride expects big things out of in 2014-15. “One guy that’s really been impressive is Ben Kimball,” McBride said. “Ben really picked it up last year and was on our top relays. … Ben was part of those relays and did a really good job in the butterfly and free.” Kimball was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams in the meet last Tuesday and also added a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle and was third in the 100-yard butterfly.

McBride also pointed out seniors Chris Laudolff, Brett Flood, Andrew Lepien and Nick Page, juniors Blake Champeau, Spencer Hanks and Keegan Buros, sophomores Cannon Lock, Chase Ciske and Trevor Goodwin and the freshmen twins of Ben and Abe Stoffel-Murray as athletes to look out for in 2014-15. The Stoffel-Murray twins, Lock and Lepien all had high finishes in the Cardinals’ meet at Kiel.
