Neenah blasts Fondy with big first inning
As the old saying goes, when it rains, it pours.
In the first inning of Thursday evening’s game against Neenah, if it could go wrong for the Fond du Lac baseball team, it did. When it was all said and done, the Cardinals had dug themselves an 11-run hole before they even had the chance to bat.
With the help of two Fond du Lac errors to start the game and nine base hits after that, Neenah scored 11 runs in the top of the first inning and was never challenged from there as the Rockets crushed the Cardinals 11-1 in Fox Valley Association play at Fond du Lac Youth Baseball Complex.
“We started out with the two errors right out of the chute and it mushroomed from there,” Fond du Lac coach Marty Paulsen said. “They had a few bloopers over there at first, but that’s still part of the game. It was just a bad first inning.”
After the first two Neenah batters reached on errors, Jack Kraus hit an infield single to load the bases and then Justin Reed delivered with a single, driving in the first run. Christopher Meidl drove in two more runs with a single and Christian Fickau and Brandon Diedrich both added RBI singles after that.
Zachary Gruett chipped in with an RBI single two batters later and then Kraus launched a double that drove in two more. Reed drove in another run after that and Meidl closed out the barrage with an RBI double.
Peyton Head took the loss on the mound for Fond du Lac, recording only one out in the first inning. Neil Abbott relieved Head and pitched until the fifth inning. Jack Cole threw the final frame in the five-inning loss.
Diedrich picked up the complete-game win for Neenah, allowing one run on four hits in five innings. Blake Schmidt drove in Reggie Hernandez with a single in the bottom of the first inning, accounting for the Cardinals’ only offense in the game.
Paulsen did mention a few positives that he saw in Thursday’s game, including the pitching of Abbott and Cole. “I thought Neil Abbott came in and pitched well,” Paulsen said. “Jack Cole, who’s a freshman, had his first shot (on the mound) in the last inning there and he showed poise. I was happy about that.”

Peyton Head leads Fond du Lac past Kaukauna
As the temperature plummeted this past week, the Fond du Lac baseball team started to heat up. A week ago, the Cardinals stood without a win. Now they’ve got three.
Peyton Head pitched a complete-game five-hitter as Fond du Lac took down Kaukauna 4-1 in Fox Valley Association play on a chilly Friday evening at the Fond du Lac Youth Baseball Complex, the Cardinals’ third victory in a row. “He came out and did a heck of a job in cold weather like this,” Fond du Lac coach Marty Paulsen said of Head. “I was very pleased overall. I thought our defense was very good. … It was an excellent, excellent performance.”
In allowing five hits, Head struck out three and walked two — forcing the Galloping Ghosts into nine groundouts and seven flyouts. After giving up a run in the first inning, Head settled down and didn’t allow another after that. “My defense helped me out, making plays for me,” Head said. “Throwing good pitches and Coach was calling good pitches for me.”
Trailing 1-0 early, Fond du Lac (3-3, 2-2 FVA) broke out for three runs in the third inning with the help of some shoddy Kaukauna (3-7, 1-3 FVA) defense. After a Jace Laning flyout to start the frame, Carver Nolan ripped a single and advanced to second when the Ghosts’ first baseman missed the throw over on a pickoff play.
Blaine Evans followed with a bunt single that advanced Nolan to third and Reggie Hernandez was subsequently hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Jason Schneider then smashed a line drive that was caught by Kaukauna’s second baseman and should have been an easy double play with Hernandez well off first base. But the throw to first was way off the mark, allowing Nolan to score from third.
Following that sequence, the Kaukauna third baseman misplayed a Matt Ryan ground ball, allowing Evans to score. Finally, a throwdown to second base attempting to catch Ryan stealing got away, which sent Hernandez to the plate. All told, three unearned runs crossed the plate for the Cards. Fond du Lac added another run in the fifth inning when Hernandez ripped a double to deep left field and scored on a Schneider single.
Head and the Cardinals did run into some trouble in the top of the sixth inning, however. A walk, a single and an error loaded the bases for Kaukauna with only one out. But Head forced Tanner Verkuilen into a dribbler that Fond du Lac catcher Ryan Norton picked up and stepped on home plate with for the forceout. Matt Miller struck out in the next at-bat, ending the threat.
“If he would have given up another hit or walked another guy, we might have thought about pulling him,” Paulsen said of Head in the sixth. “We had guys ready. But it couldn’t have happened any better. A dribbler out front, picks it up, steps on home. That was big to get out of there. If they would have gotten a base hit and scored a couple, then we have big decision to make. We didn’t have to make that decision, so that worked out well.” The Ghosts would go down in order in the seventh, wrapping up the Cardinals’ third straight victory.
